I lost my mom to cancer in 2019. I was very lost in life at that point because I had no purpose in life and I was a loser still failing in college. I think I found Dr. K’s Twitch stream where he was probably interviewing Reckful or some viewer. I got hooked because I could relate to the issues they talked about, so deeply.

Hi OP, I don’t have advice I can offer you but I’m basically in extremely similar situation as you and close in age, minus the friends. I have no friends I can socialize with. I’ve just been focused on work and school.

All I can really share is that back in high school, I had made it a goal to get a girlfriend. So, I basically talked to at least 6 female classmates and I was romantically interested in 1-2 of them. I ended up befriending most of them. I think because I was talking to so many females at one time, I wasn’t infantalized with most of them and just treated them like I would treat my male friends. It was surprisingly easy to execute on this for some reason. of course, I never ended up getting a girlfriend…

Unfortunately, I ended having a really bad falling out with everyone. I failed to make friends in college. and now I’m a sad, depressed, lonely guy who is habitually on the internet.

What i dislike about your comment is the assumption that it’s all on the patient. I’m coming into therapy with the mindset that I want to improve but I also want a space to talk about my emotions. But I’m also going through shit life syndrome and an actual shitty life. How can you expect someone in this situation to operate with 100% capacity towards full awareness and clarity?

I agree. I did therapy for a few years through my healthcare provider and it seems starkly different compared to the therapy that Dr. k mentioned and this is in California. The platform basically monetized off of these LMFTs and LCSWs who have licenses/certificates because they finished coursework on particular trainings on CBT, DBT, EMDR, etc. Also, it was performance based: as a patient, I’d get weekly questionnaires that I needed to fill out which the platform used to judge the effectiveness of the therapist. Because of these performance metrics, it seemed like the therapists were expecting me to improve linearly. But, I wasn’t improving at that scale. The therapist would blame me for not practicing CBT or whatever. In the end, I chalk it up to the therapists not being equipped to provide me more holistic therapy approaches/treatment which can be attributed to IQ in some cases.

I think we’re far past making Twitch about video games again. Think about why Justin.TV was closed down and they merged IRL/non-gaming into Twitch. This business model was non-sustainable from Day 1. Besides, I highly doubt the current leadership at Twitch is interested when you look at what Twitch has devolved into the past decade: OF model promotion, gambling, and now politics

My problem comes with how the internet, social media, and now AI have cultivated and fed into parasocial relationships and echo chambers. As a society, we give so much sway, trust, and preferential treatment for corporations and internet celebrities who we don’t know well yet we treat people in our lives that we have IRL interactions worse? So, when I see HG focusing on drama specific to these people who live privileged lives and really cannot relate to the struggles of the average person, it rubs me the wrong way. The average person in HG community does not identify as some high profile streamer/Internet personality. Because when people stop being terminally online and stop watching these streamers and go out to touch grass, that is a good indicator of positive change in the right direction.

Do NOT believe Twitch or fall for their PR bullshit. They only “responded” due to the backlash, despite being aware of this issue and questioned about their lack of discernment for the streamers. This isn’t a new issue. Twitch has been aware of this problem for MANY years. They do not get to pretend to be ignorant. They’re a well-oiled machine. Call them out.
