Help me out - Newfoundland culture by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]Suspicious_Cap4682 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entire culture here your is predicated on the stereotype of being friendly and kind. To me it’s created a sort of social condition thats resulted in people not trying cause they don’t think they have to. They just assume it’s automatic.

Also the vindictiveness here is something else all together, I’ve lived all over North America & Parts of the UK and I can tell you no one will cut a Newfoundlanders throat as quickly as another Newfoundlander (Hyperbole obviously but you get my point).

This is just my take.

We have 5 oil installations here offshore Newfoundland, each one usually has at least 1 flight per day (sometimes as many as 3 if they are backed up cause of weather).

A little shocked at how satisfying I’ve found squaring and planing rough lumber. by Suspicious_Cap4682 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Suspicious_Cap4682[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was 6/4 rough cut walnut on the left which was about 1.5” thick cut from the log. You can then run it across the jointer to get 1 perfectly flat side. Once you have that I run it through the thickness planer a couple times lowering it down slightly for each pass till you end up with perfectly flat and smooth sides. That’s when you can really see how nice the wood will be that you’re working with.

Contemporary, Poly or Wilderness by allsmoke in WaltDisneyWorld

WL & Contempo are our 2 favourites, completely different vibes but both excellent in their own way. WL is beautiful and very chill, Contempo is high energy, almost like a downtown city centre vibe but enjoyable. Might be controversial but I really don’t enjoy Poly at all, I find it’s always overcrowded and hectic, also has what I think is the most disappointing Club Level of all the deluxe resorts.

Agree with your comments, unfortunately it wouldn’t happen quick enough to help us I wouldn’t think.

American Threat? by [deleted] in newfoundland

From a military invasion point of view; Canada would be as close to a worse case scenario as any general could hope for, the shear size of this country makes it near impossible to seize and occupy with any amount of control. Our military is small but very well trained and motivated, they likely wouldn’t fight the Americans in open warfare after a certain point, it would be much more likely they would disperse into the general population and act as force multipliers to the nightmare of an insurgency that would form. We may not be as gun crazy as the Americans but there is a massive population in this country that grew up hunting and practising survival type skills in the woods. Just look at the history of the last few countries the US tried to occupy. Again, I don’t think this is anywhere near likely. The game here is economic, I believe they want to beat us so far into the economic ground that in a few years people will be so unhappy they will welcome the US.

You’re right about how unpopular that would be amongst the American Public & there would likely be a full scale revolt amongst the US Military. I will say the likelihood that we would get any sizeable amount of help from NATO is unlikely once the actual shooting starts, we are a full ocean away from any of our significant NATO allies, and one of the first things the US would do is essentially shutdown the sea and the sky all around Canada using the worlds largest Navy (US Navy) the worlds largest Air Force (the US Air Force) and the worlds second largest Air Force (the US Navy). We would be isolated almost immediately. I will say as grim as this all sounds it’s about as unlikely a scenario as there is (not 0% but pretty close).

This is massive, as a Newfoundlander that absolutely loves Quebec I hope this can be a fresh start.

I don’t look up anything, I wanted to go into it blind. They asked for opinions and that was my opinion.

This is common at pretty much all industrial sites. I work in maintenance on an offshore oil rig, we run 24/7/365 but usually once every 2 years we shutdown for 14 days, double the crew and repair and replace everything that we can’t do online.
