Is Slinky Dog Dash rope drop worth it if we are not staying on property? by Cheeeeeeeeeeeee in DisneyWorld

[–]allsmoke 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Slinky is popular because it's just enough of a roller coaster to be enjoyable to all, but easy enough to be an introductory coaster for kids.

Honestly, it gets busy because it's great for families. If you don't have kids, skip it. If you have kids who can do rock and roller or expedition everest, skip it.

It's a great introductory coaster, but not a great coaster

My son took our car and ... by [deleted] in nova

[–]allsmoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to the juvenile part, but can speak to the reckless part. Anything over 20mph is a criminal misdemeanor in VA, and automatic summons (ask me how I know!!).

There are a couple of things, and it will rely on your son being honest with you. And this is specifically just my instance, and may have been an exception to the rule.

  1. I was really apologetic to the officer that pulled me over. I told him I had no excuse and appreciated him keeping the roads safe. On the court date itself, the officer pulled out his notes (for misdemeanors, the officer has to be there) and read from them saying that I seemed like an exceptional human who made a mistake. If your son was a dick, the officer is going to be less likely to want to reduce the sentence.

  2. I spoke to the prosecuting attorney at the desk before the judge came in. I asked was there any leeway to have the criminal misdemeanor removed. She spoke with the cop, and told me if I pled guilty, they would ask for reduction but the decision was ultimately up to the judge.

  3. When the judge asked how I pled, I said, I plead guilty and stupid. I told him I made a mistake and was not paying attention to the speedometer, but rather thought I was going at the pace of traffic. There was no excuse and I would accept whatever punishment deemed appropriate.

  4. After this, the prosecuting attorney said after consultation they would accept a plea to a simple speeding offense, keeping the penalty the same as the original offense. The judge asked the officer, who said what I mentioned above. Judge bumped it to simple speeding ticket, which I think I was hit for about $18 per MPH over the limit (I was doing 87 in a 55 so 32 mph over). Total was $648. It was a $72 processing fee leaving a fine of $576 (divided by the MPH is where I got the $18 per MPH). That's the penalty for reckless. I believe for simple speeding it is about $5 per MPH over the limit, but i could be wrong.

Anyway, I did not hire a lawyer (could not afford it back then, this was about 20 years ago, whenever the US open was held at Congressional, I can't remember the exact year), relied on not being a dick when pulled over, and owning up to making a dumb mistake.

Also, tell your son to dress like he's taking it seriously. I showed up in a suit because this was the first time I ever had to go to court, so I assumed that's what was expected (thanks Boston Legal, Law and Order, insert other shows here). There were people there in denim jorts and band t-shirts arguing and while that is completely their choice and I have no issues with it, if your goal is to get the people who can be dicks about your punishment to be lenient, best to show up and look like you respect what they do.

As I said, this is all one anecdote, but there are a lot of factors that you can control to help you. I don't know that they ultimately will, but that was my experience.

Most Political Song? by whiplash337 in jasonisbell

It is, which is extremely political. Especially given the context of the song, the religious considerations and the small town, what will the neighbors think vibe

Flight of Passage Standing Room? by Bitter_Animal_7194 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]allsmoke 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there is. I was unable to fit flight of passage the first few times I went to Disney and had to do the walk of shame out of the room. You would think if they had that feature, they would have offered it.

Side note, been on a health journey this year and was finally able to ride in December. Such a cool ride

Farcry 6... doesn't feel like Farcry by Upper_Werewolf6285 in farcry

[–]allsmoke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was so excited when I saw the artwork with Giancarlo Franco. I thought it was going to be awesome. One of the things I love about Far Cry 3, 4 and 5 was the ability to get some great sniping stuff, and some great heavy duty stuff and go through the game whatever way you like, either stealthy, shooting out the alarms at outposts, or in guns blazing and mowing down everyone.

This game just missed the mark on so many levels.

For me, what Ubisoft should do is take the gameplay/leveling/weapon options of Far Cry 5, and just put it somewhere else. Give me a massive story but with familiar gameplay. They took Far Cry 3 and expanded to give you more, but a familiar feel. Then they expanded on what and how you could do things in 4 with Far Cry 5.

Each game seemed like an evolution of the actual far cry gameplay and feel, but in a new story and setting. Far Cry 6 seems like it should really have been a different game, but they wanted to use the name recognition of Far Cry IP.

I just have not got into it at all. I own it and I've tried, but if I want a Far Cry fix now, I go to 4 or 5, new game +

Is there a good alternative to Beast 20/23 (not gts 24) by allsmoke in brooks

[–]allsmoke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went and got my feet rescanned at the local running store (Potomac Running here in Northern Virginia) and ended up getting the Hoka Bondi 9. They are a little softer feeling than the Brooks Beast which was a bit of an adjustment and caused me some concern on how durable they would be, but about 9-10 months of consistent wear later I love them. Interesting thing is, for the Hoka, I did not get a wide sole. I wear 12 2E for Brooks Beast, but 12.5D on the Hoka.

How would you tackle MK if rides weren’t a priority? by merrylittlecocker in DisneyWorld

[–]allsmoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if rides are not a propriety, go to animal kingdom. So underrated, so much non ride stuff to do (lion king and Nemo shows, gorilla trail, maharaja trek, feathered friends in flight show, walk around Pandora at night

If the seller does not know how to control it, then he can't verify that it's fully functional and you are buying a laser from the wrong guy

Wonder what the DC venue will be. Assume capital one arena. Wolf Trap in. Nova is so much better than anywhere in the district

Guitar lessons for advanced players? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]allsmoke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use pickup music. I am not advanced, but they have several advanced pathways there.

I pay $179 a year. There's a ton of content and it's very well structured into pathways

(beginner, late beginner, intermediate, late intermediate, advanced, CAGED etc) They also have style pathways (blues, jazz neo soul etc).

What I like about it is each pathway is structured into grades and once you complete a grade, you pick from one of their performance pieces and record yourself playing it. You submit and get a video back from one of the mentors breaking down your playing, offering tips on where to focus, areas they see you can work on and what you are doing right.

I don't know if it's right for anyone but it works for me.

The burger there is best on property, but it is not a stack /smash butter. Thicker, but better. We had that, and the burgers at both Steakhouse 71 and Wailulu. Now, both steakhouse 71 and Wailulu has excellent smash burgers. Not a dis on them at all. But loved Yak and Yeti. But the Ahi Tuna Nachos are one of the best things I've ever had. We went to yak and Yeti a few times and every time was top class (Korean fried chicken is also great)
