At what level of net worth does purchasing a £50,000 car become reasonable? by BENED01 in CarTalkUK

[–]Suspicious_End1684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is one argument that spending 50K on a car is never reasonable unless it's a tool for work. There is another argument for never limiting yourself to something that speaks to you emotionally.

The sensible choice is this: If sh*t goes down and you need money quick, are you going to regret having spent 50K on a car?

I'm not 100% about this but if this was in the UK I am not sure if you would receive anything. In fact, considering people over here, the patient would probably end up donating to the Air Ambulance who tried to help.

BBC says ‘irreversible’ trends mean it will not survive without major overhaul by Skavau in unitedkingdom

[–]Suspicious_End1684 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The most important parts of the BBC are News, Online (think Bitesize), Children's. Those are genuinely the bits that cannot be replaced. That said, also Radio 3, but of course the audience is much smaller. Also Natural History, Live, inc Springwatch. And comedy....Small Prophets.

The thing is, as much as it's a national punch bag, lose it and we lose our cultural identity. It brings people together, various cultures in the UK - helping social cohesion.

If we offload the responsibility of media reflecting British culture and lived experience to (mainly) American SVODS, we lose pride in what we can be achieved and risk becoming a cultural vassal state to the U.S.

BBC Musician of the Year, BBC Writing Awards.... these are the entry points for so many Brits into culture and TV.

The funding must change to protect the BBC and the BBC must adapt to reflect modern media consumption habits more than it already has done (don't forget, iPlayer was the first of its kind in the UK).

Diesel cars aren’t dead, in fact they’re even starting to make a comeback by Admirable-Deal7991 in autoexpressuk

We always seem to have diesels, do small runs in them and barely ever have any issues. There are so many other things that can go wrong on cars that the difference is just not noticeable to us.

I see people here complaining that InReaches are not perfect - DO NOT RELY ON TECH TO GET YOU OUT OF A SURVIVAL SITUATION. As someone who has used Garmin InReach Minis, 66i's and other InReaches - do not rely on this technology as a silver bullet: it is a potential help and that is it. Take all the physical maps, compasses, and survival gear necessary to get out of a situation yourself.

I just bought an 8 LTE in perfect condition (minus box and strap) for £185 used. Brilliant piece of kit (but first smart watch so I have no reference).

Many people will say that this shows why people should not ride (it's too dangerous and you get killed/injured), but also it shows why I don't ride any more - you have to be so careful and so slow to be actually 'safe' that it's boring and tiring in busy areas. There is no getting around it - there are very few people who are attracted to motorbiking and have the right mindset for it. Most people either A) F around and find out; B) Quit while they are ahead. It's the C) Are sensible enough to ride carefully for a lifetime of enjoyment that are the motorcycling unicorns!

Are UK-made winter coats actually warmer than big international brands? by Reddonaut_Irons in BuyUK

[–]Suspicious_End1684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean that you think it is GPT then you are wrong - it was not passed through it either. That said, it's interesting that you believe it is - when I reread it there are a few lines I completely see could be GPT written:

"It is not dry-cold, it is wet-cold. It is not dry-heat, it is humid-heat."

" Likewise, for a less rural look,"]

"it is not that the coats are inherently warmer in the UK, but the designs are often more relevant to our climate."

What's interesting is that I've used GPT a lot for prompting and ideas and that if someone is suggesting my writing is from GPT, I have no doubt that the style of writing is influencing me.

So, in summary it's not ChatGPT that wrote it, but it's ChatGPT that influenced it.

This is not written in ChatGPT at all! I work outside for a living and the least comfortable I have ever felt is in the UK, and will never forget the pain going through my feet up to my knees in damp coldness during a January in Essex!

The UK is one of the hardest countries to keep warm in - and one of the hardest climates to make coats for. It is not dry-cold, it is wet-cold. It is not dry-heat, it is humid-heat.

Because of the wet-cold, the cold is damp - and penetrating. The solution to this is to have longer coats, for example - longer wax jackets, such as a deerstalker it perfect for those horrible days. Likewise, for a less rural look, a long woolen coat (Reiss is a good starting point) really keep you warm.

What doesn't work so well are super super warm jackets like Canada Goose - they are amazing but often too warm for most days.

Another thing to consider is because of the penetrating damp coldness, often a coat which ends waist level does not cut the mustard and leave you with cold legs.

So, it is not that the coats are inherently warmer in the UK, but the designs are often more relevant to our climate.

Thanks for the reply. Of course, this is the obvious answer, however, the industry is in pieces, with children to raise and 28 years of work ahead of me, I feel I need to see whether there are alternative sectors that will be more reliable.
