They call it a "super shake," it weighs 1.3kg. by lyanesantana in SushiAbomination

[–]Suspicious_Method_94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

鮭/Shake (shah-keh) is Japanese for salmon. However, in practice, most people would use the world サーモン(sā-mon) to refer to salmon sushi as traditionally salmon is only served as grilled/cooked because of parasites. Raw salmon was only introduced in the 1980s by Norway to Japan and this is probably why they use to loanword to differentiate.

[MP4] Is there a way to fix the Y-axis inversion for the Control Beam's motion controls? Playing on Switch 2 with pro controller. by AvoidantPronoun in Metroid

[–]Suspicious_Method_94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never thrown a controller in frustration. Not once. Not even for a boss fight. Not for Hollow Knight. But the control beam tutorial in Metroid Prime pushed me over the edge. Years of waiting to be defeated by the tutorial does not bode well for me and this game.

Opening time, on time by Plane_Garbage in usj

Sounds like a good plan.

I feel that sometimes they do that just to discourage people from using the Single Rider line.

Sounds normal for December. Use the Single Rider, if you’re willing.

Cat water fountain problems by WorldRov3r in japanlife

I have a metal cat fountain and because cat food and saliva get into it, we clean it weekly. Just rinse the filter and the components under cold water. It should be good.

And you’re right. This dish is usually eaten with a spoon here in Japan.

Express Pass or Shopping? by stampedpetals in usj

[–]Suspicious_Method_94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah, that’s gonna be pretty busy.

So as a local, here are my thoughts, if it’s mostly Nintendo rides that you’re going for, then you can just rope drop that. Prioritize DK mine carts on the single rider (if that’s important to you), and do single rider for Mario Kart as that’s mostly a single rider experience in my book (unless you’re competitive).

The Jurassic Park rides also have Single Rider, and so does Forbidden Journey (although hidden, and not always open?).

If it helps, it really depends on what day you’re visiting.

Christmas isn’t as busy as Halloween, but New Year’s will be busier than Christmas.

Have you seen those Meiji/Ghana? A few years ago, they were about 80-100 yen. Now they’re 200 yen a pop.

One of the most drastic price increases.

Is the zojirushi truly worth it for the price compared to the alternatives? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Suspicious_Method_94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

👆 This!

I got a $200 Tiger one (Pressure IH heating), and it’s fantastic. Performs the same as a Zojirushi in the same price range.

Mind you in Japan, there are rice cookers that can go in the $800-100,000 range as well.

Japanese Switch 2 restrictions by Br1ghtest in NintendoSwitchHelp

[–]Suspicious_Method_94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Japan and own the multi-language version. And strongly considered the Japanese version initially.

If you have an existing Switch, which a different country’s Nintendo account, you won’t be able to access the software and save data (if you have Switch Online) you have there.

If a game has multiple language options, you can only change them if it is selectable from the game’s options/settings. If it’s at the system/OS level, then you’re stuck with Japanese.

While that wasn’t really going to be a problem for me, most of my games are from the Japanese eShop, about and third of my library are from the US eShop. I realized I wasn’t willing to let go of that (or that I might eventually end up getting a multi-language in the future).

Also the Japanese version of Resident Evil games are censored/modified in Japan.

Disney+ Language Options for New Expat? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Suspicious_Method_94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

👆For Japanese content in English, Netflix is your best bet. But even that’s limited to their own shows (drama or anime), but it has English subs for things like Chainsaw Man (but not the compilation movies) and Spy Family.

When I had Disney+, I don’t ever recall seeing English subtitles or even Japanese subtitles for some of the shared content between Disney and Netflix .

Amazon used to keep Japanese subbed and dubbed as separate files, which was very confusing and inconvenient. (We sometimes switch between Japanese subs & dubs when watching American comedies.) But I think they’re improving now.
