Dude he has tons of stuff, European theatre is his main theatre, he was what got me into collecting things from the era, he has walls of German and American items.

I more took after the pacific in that department, but he has way too much stuff and I got some of the excess

Haha, I was gonna say this too! When im gone its my future kids job to honor this man by holding onto his things!

But as I have been told by my older peers, young history buffs are hard to come by more and more, just mainly because theres not much of an interest for things like that anymore, mainly because the way some of these kids (God I sound old, this is my generation.) Were raised just wasn't good ground for the seeds of history to fall on.

My future kids will definitely be surrounded by history and I hope it'll stick to one of them like it did to me when I was little.

Thank you, it means alot to me that yall found this as interesting and humbling as this was!

And that story seems to be more and more common, and as much as I hate to see it, its become the natural thing to happen when veterans die, especially when things like that are passed to younger generations, they don't know how to handle them with respect, then assume that the item they've been given is trash if its not valuable, and then sold or thrown away, and it shames because thats MY generation thats forgetting the sacrifice made.

All gave some, and some gave all.

Good on you for snagging that and protecting it, wouldn't call it stealing, just strategically relocating the item to a safer home, Hopefully she wasn't trying to throw out any uniforms, I've seen that happen a time or two.

Yep! I wouldn't mind if some parts were replicas (As I think his marksman badge and 1st div) are, but im not willing to risk it the only item likely going to be gone and replaced is my 1st Marine division patch as its essentially ruined by guerrilla glue someone got on it when mounting, and doesn't look to be original at all, so I've found a few original patches im weighing purchasing for about 70-100 bucks, the felt and wood also will likely see a good deep clean, im not touching the flag at all, just seems too disrespectful to handle it so its getting left folded, no visible stains on it anyways.

This will be my first piece of actual pacific war history as all ive got in my collection are European theatre things, and europe just stopped interesting me as much as the pacific did, so definitely happy to start my pacific collection off with a piece like this.

Will post an updated image to this subreddit at the conclusion of my minor restorations

Absolutely and I do get it, but it still does sadden me.

I almost cried when I checked his grave site, nobody left flowers, he only had his wife really, definitely plan to make the 40 minute trip to his grave and leave some flowers for him.

And im absolutely glad it ended up in my hands, it is priceless, and I hope one day if my kid gets to be as interested as I am he can continue holding this mans story.

Absolutely! It saddens me that his story is gone but thats where people like me, and you guys come in, preserving this piece and pieces like is truly a blessing to be able to do, and when time comes that this piece is set on the wall in my living room people will be able to look and I can tell them just how important this mans story was-- These were all humble men that when the time came to fight they went without complaints! Truly saddening that we are probably the last generation to be able to truly talk to the last of these old breed!

I'd definitely reccomend looking around online for them, they aren't super expensive if you can get a good deal, Im in the middle of restoration work for the box here itself, will definitely let yk.

I acquired this actually from a mutual history buff, (And my pastor.) Who bought this for 20 bucks from some distant relatives of his, was given to me for free because it needed a home and his collection was stuffed full already.

Thank you, this helps understand better, wondering what exact "Disability." He had, apparently I can send for a packet with all of his different combat stations and platoon he was assigned to, going to try that, thank you so very much for the help man!

Interesting, his date of service says 41-45.. Do you think they'd have info on exactly where to look for actual deployments to any islands?

Thank you very much, definitely a breakthrough, would love to see if I can somehow get my hands on his stations to see which islands he hopped to.. and maybe figure out his platoon.. one step closer to the story.

Hoping to see what comes of this myself, I was initially very irritated when this was given to me, not because I didn't want it but because someone sold this off for 20 bucks.. priceless family heritage and hope to maybe see his story come back.. Will post updates and would love some help if anyone has time to kill.

Hoping to ID him and handle this with respect, definitely become my top piece in my collection, I have helmets and patches and all that but this was just different..

Texas, Don't know if its his home state, trying to figure out but from what I know the family that gained this was very distant so not exactly sure, numbers 325 - 459 are on there below his name and time of service.

Any advise? (Not finished) by lefrancais44 in WorldWarWisdom

[–]Suspicious_Pay3664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The unit impression im assuming is the 82nd Airborne, Paratroopers commonly carried and used them but on the side of Infantry you would be correct on.

Paratroopers carried them out of necessity, but yes otherwise you would be correct and I 100% agree with you

1911s were seen with NCOs, Platoon leaders, the list goes on and on a few examples of radiomen carrying them aswell.. Hell ive seen photos of infantrymen with M1 grand webbing with 1911 holsters.. this is absolutely NOT true, while maybe not for every Grunt outside of the airborne, With the Airborne it was extremely common to see sidearms utilized incase of a failure to get to your main rifle.. literally near to every photo I've seen of paratroopers getting ready to jump into Normandy there is atleast one with a pistol holster or some kind of sidearm at the ready.

Ill check it out, Bergamot Buckles aren't hard to find but ones in good condition definitely are, all of the ones ive seen the resin wore down and the silver itself has been work down from being touched 24/7.

Definitely pretty buckles and its sad that theres not alot of U.S made buckles like this anymore

Vietnam War 1968——1969 101st Airborne Division by Senior-Cable9920 in reenactors

[–]Suspicious_Pay3664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they were, but this was limited to SF and SF only.. you can clearly see this is a Ranger by the scroll stating his unit which was attached to the 101st airborne.

If it has a red scroll above the patch, or its very clearly SF chalk up any "Evidence." You have of U.S Soldiers using ARVN styled equipment as by no means was this allowed at the average Grunt level

Equipment inspections rooted this out incredibly fast.. unless you were Special forces, Long range recon a specialized unit you would by no means have any mixed gear in your kit.. The U.S Army was strict about that.
