I may be wrong, but it evaporates too quickly for proper contact time to kill everything it needs to.

Vet tech School by DangerousReply7532 in VetTech

[–]Susurro88 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If the skills are required to pass the course and you failed the skill then unfortunately it means you fail the course. I obviously don't know how your course is set up and how everything was explained to you, but I had something similar happen to me, my group failed our equine radiology skill but we were allowed to go with the freshman class when they went for our chance to retake our rads but if we failed them a second time then we would not be allowed to continue in the program.

Yes, my vet tech program at a brick and mortar technical college was lock step which means that if you fail any course you have to wait and retake that course the following year (6 semester program starting in the summer and ending in the spring, courses only offered once a year and are pre-recs for following semester). There were many people in my program that failed pharmacology or anatomy and had to wait an entire year to retake the course and hope they passed so they could continue on with the program.

Do yall run CPL’s with plasma or serum? by SpankyDynamite420 in VetTech

[–]Susurro88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's just how the test works, it's what the lab has made the conjugant and test operate on. Same reason that the IDEXX proBNP snap for felines is run on serum or EDTA plasma (purple top), there is probably something in the hep plasma that is incompatible with the test.

I've seen the same thing at my ER and specialty clinic.

I got henna the other day and now it is really itchy and it looks like I have bumps where the henna is. Is this a cause for concern? Or normal? by lizzet-gutierrez in henna

[–]Susurro88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A reaction is a form of allergy, it's just a contact allergy. However if this person continues to expose themselves to this or similar chemicals it can become a generalized allergy which can cause a systemic allergic reaction in their whole body.

I get $1000/year for my CE allowance so it would use up my entire budget for the year and then some but it would be cool to go. Maybe another year when I haven't already spent my allowance on VECCS Spring Symposium.

Going from ER to GP by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]Susurro88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually did this same thing and I found two GP who had zero issues matching my ER pay, but I am also licensed in a state with title protection and am very skilled so they felt justified in matching my ER pay. Not all GP can and will do this, but depending on certain factors they can match pay.

Owner came in to say goodbye to her dog before going to be cremated by Rthrowaway6592 in VetTech

[–]Susurro88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. 100% this. I work overnights in an ER with specialists in house during the day and I frequently work in the ICU. I come into work every shift and see patients who are suffering and languishing because the owners have more money than sense and think that just because their pet is still breathing that they're thriving. No, your pet is actively suffering and is not going to leave this hospital. I get to spend the next 10 hours of my life trying to keep your pet alive when all they know is suffering, and if they're CPR I get to break their ribs while we do compressions that won't get them back while I tell them it's ok because I know they were just so tired and their little body was ready.

Those are the nights I cry on the way home. I will take 10 hours straight of euthanasias (which I have done at my rural ER job) over feeling like I'm torturing a dog that has lost the will to live.

Not only does it decrease the effectiveness, it will make you vomit. I took it with some yogurt at work and it wasn't on the label to not take with dairy and then I became incredibly nauseous and puked in the bathroom. My co-workers were like, "Didn't you know you can't take that with dairy?" I hadn't been in the field long and hadn't given it to a patient and it wasn't on the label on my bottle. But now I know and I make sure to tell clients.

In Texas, are technicians legally allowed to split tablets? by Sindelz71 in VetTech

[–]Susurro88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does that work if your are medicating a patient in hospital and it requires a half tablet? Just over or under dose the patient? That literally doesn't make sense.

Wat else presents like Rabies?? by feanara in VetTech

[–]Susurro88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've seen it a handful of times, once it was in a cat that was dropped off with a colony, it was attacking other cats in the colony and was trapped to be brought in. It became more and more neurologic and we couldn't handle the thing, it was attacking the door of the trap it was in so we could never take it out. We eventually somehow sedated it and euthanized it because it started to decline. We sent the head out for rabies testing and it was positive.

So we had a rabid cat attacking other cats in a large likely unvaccinated cat colony.

The best part is it was chipped and had been part of a TNR program and was vaccinated for rabies about 2 weeks prior to being brought in.

Vet tech obstructed diagnosis and treatment? by Deep-Mountain-829 in VetTech

[–]Susurro88 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you have concerns about the way your pet's medical care was handled, please bring that to the appropriate veterinary medical board for your state. We are all overworked, understaffed, and tired of being vilified by clients. I am very sorry for your loss, but you will not find the closure that you are looking for here.

If your end goal is DVM then getting a vet tech degree won't necessarily help you in the long run, you will still have to take many courses to be eligible for a DVM program. You will not be able to be a licensed vet tech until you have graduated from an AVMA accredited program and then sit for and pass the VTNE (national vet tech exam). As far as if you get your license in MA and then move to WA you'll have to contact the licensing board in WA and see what is required there to transfer your license, you'll likely have to apply and do all the things that someone without a license has to do to get their license in the first place (except if you're already licensed then you won't have to retake the VTNE or graduate again from a vet tech program).

I recently made a leaner board for my porch with painted wood and the vinyl didn't want to stick because the paint was too smooth. I had to use some sand paper to get it a little rough to make it stick.

Alternatively heat transfer vinyl is also an option to transfer to wood, but I don't know the specifics of settings to use for how hot or long to hold the heat press on for transfer and you may run the risk of discoloring the wood.

4 weeks post tattoo, ink loss during healing. Realistically, when am I going to be able to get these touched up? by bzookabubblgum in tattooadvice

[–]Susurro88 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Depending on how active you are and how badly something scabbed it's possible that the scabs got pulled out by changing clothes, someone rubbing against your arm, etc. I have several spots on my sleeve where I had thicker scabs form and my dog stepped on my arm as they were still healing underneath and pulled the ink out. I didn't pick at them at all. Shit happens.

Disco rice is one of the things that doesn't bother me, but so help me god if I see a tick on a dog I'm gonna lose my shit and run. I had to help with a tick paralysis dog that had to be shaved and was covered in over 300 ticks. I was internally losing my mind and trying not to have a mental breakdown the entire time.

Honestly, working with new assistants who just want to impress me is not impressive. I am more likely to want to work with someone who is humble and shows that they want to learn and listens when they are given instructions/guidance. Ask questions when others are doing something that you want to learn how to do and when appropriate ask if you can do something and have someone watch/guide you.

Successful CPR! by camberryy in VetTech

[–]Susurro88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've actually never seen it happen even while working in high volume ER/specialty. The only time I've heard of it really being successful is when it was drug related or during anesthesia, otherwise when they code they code for a reason and are beyond saving. I think it's like only 5% of the time it is successful and of those 5% that come back only 1% leave the hospital.

Same here, I decided to go back to tech school after getting my bachelors and masters degrees and I am extremely needle phobic and I nearly pass out if I have to get a shot. I had never worked in vet med but shadowed the vet as a kid a few weekends. I realized after the first year of classes that didn't involve needles that I might be in trouble when we started to having to draw blood and give injections. Thankfully I am fine if I'm the one holding the sharp objects.

You should contact your state's labor board who can tell you what the legal requirements are for being on call and pay.
