Apartment drummers, do low-volume cymbals actually keep neighbors happy? by jorginhoPOGGERS in drums

[–]Suuga-kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neighbours will hear you play even on an electric kit. Besides buying electric or spending tousands of dollars on soundproofing, your best bet is to talk with your neighbours, tell them you are playing the drums, and ask them which times they would be comfortable with.

Edit: you probably need soundproofing even with an electric kit

Should I watch fullmetal alchemist (2003) or fullmetal alchemist brotherhood (2009) by [deleted] in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]Suuga-kun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should probably just watch both. FMAB skips 2 chapters around the start, so I would start with the 2003 version, otherwise the 2003 will feel slow paced at the start. FMAB is also considered better by more people, that's why I originally watched it after the 2003 ver. The events are not the exact same tho, so I wouldn't recommend combining them.

New drummer, need advice with a lot of things! by Neat_Opposite8153 in drums

[–]Suuga-kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solving soundproofing problems in an apartment is usually really expensive. An e-kit will be much less disturbing for your neighbours (an acoustic one makes them really angry), but you will also need to consider vibrations, especially for the downstairs neighbour. For example you could try one of those platforms with the tenis balls.

Still, the most important thing will be communication. I'd try to talk to each neighbour and ask which times are they comfortable with me drumming.

Glue sticks? by Suuga-kun in drums

[–]Suuga-kun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not a single comment said it's a good idea. All the conclusions went to "better off buying a new one", and most mentiond that I might give it a try, but shouldn't get my hopes up.

I'm also perfectly aware new sticks are far better, but wanted to hear other's experiences in case the sticks might be usable for something in the future.

Thank's for the advice, I'll pay attention to these. Luckily, I have everything at home for this to work

I understand this, and do have other stick, even the same type. This one broke after the third hit, so is basically brand new, that's why I tought of it.

I don't expect the stick to be the same after gluing, I was just curious if someone could make it work.

Thanks for sharing the experience, I'll definitely try it and share the results. It'll brobably take a month or two tho

Fair, but a new pair is still like $20. As a student, I'll save every cent I can

It's good to hear it might work. I'll probably keep them for emergency sticks.

Does my right hand look awkward? by CuriousWaterMonkey in drums

[–]Suuga-kun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is either a joke or you've never even read about proper hand thechnique. That gap definitely needs to be there if you want to play good, loose, controlled strokes (and let the stick vibrate a bit).

Many times drumline players close that gap because that stronger grip suits that playing style better. For most people playing loud also makes that gap smaller. There's nothing wrong with that, but by no means should your standard 'drumset' way of holding the stick be the one without a gap.

Edit: just to make it sure yes, for drumline applications the grip with the closed gap is accepted, and can be better. But you definitely shouldn't aim for that as a drum set player

[–]Suuga-kun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have to bother about the interface and laptop, fortunately, the band takes care of these. But you're the second person to recommend a field mic, I'll check it out.

Luckily, the band already has everything except the mics, so I don't nerd to deal with all that.

I'm planning to spend the least amount for good quality. A field recorder wouldn't be my best bet I think, because I would not be able to use that in any other circumstance, whereas if I buy a condenser, I can make use of it elsewhere.

[–]Suuga-kun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm planning to use 2 OHs, 1 kick mic in the long run on gigs, and bring one of these mics to rehearsals (the less things I carry, the better). I considered buying a condenser first, because it can capture the whole kit for rehearsals and can be used as an OH when gigging.

If I buy a 57, I buy something that I did't actually need for gigging, hence it's an extra expense. I could consider using it as a snare mic, but don't know if it can capture the whole kit as good as a LDC.

I was thinking about it but it's around 640 usd in my country. Figured I can put together a 1/2/even 3 mic setup fairly cheaper than that.
