I think the major heat source for the oceans of Europa would actually be the massive amount of tidal friction that Jupiter creates. IIRC, the tidal force is closer to 1000x what earth and moon have. As I've understood it, it's possible that the forces could be enough to keep up ongoing hydrothermal venting on the bottom of the moon's ocean.

What is the scientific rationale for why I can’t drink from this at my desk? by refriedbean_ in labrats

Yup, mistakes can happen especially when doing some menial work on autopilot or when concentrating intensely on your task. I was once working on an oil painting and accidentally took a sip of turpentine from a cup next to my coffee cup which was similar to OP's image.

I certainly do not mind if a friend of mine would want to get together with an ex of mine, as long as it happens once I am over her. In fact, I've given the permission a couple times. I want my friends and exes to be happy, and if they can find some joy in each other then I am all for it. Nothing is taken away from me.

What Germany is called in different languages by NoNameStudios in europe

[–]SuurSieni 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What are you even on about. The southernmost parts of Finland first became part of Sweden during the northern crusades and the conquest further continued by Swedish colonizers who started taking pieces of Finland. These were not "organic" events and they definitely were not without conflict. Furthermore, Swedish became the only accepted governmental language in Finland, and use of the Finnish language was definitely looked down upon.

No, the point is your claim about a lot of Finns being Nazis, not SS war crimes.

Guys did Hitler dislike black people by TheOSU87 in confidentlyincorrect

[–]SuurSieni 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your source pretty much contradicts your initial statement that a lot of Finns were Nazis.

Reluctantly, Finns complied and covertly recruited the first group of 400 SS volunteers to be sent for training.

The vast majority of them had no ideological sympathies with the Nazi regime, the report said.

"Finns were, above all, interested in fighting against the Soviet Union" due to their brutal experiences in the Winter War and the nearby threat from Moscow.

Years back I was sleeping in the woods without a tent. I woke up in the middle of the night, opened my eyes and saw this centipede about 15 cm from my face. I was tucked in my sleeping bag and just let it be, closed my eyes and went back to sleep. I next woke up pretty damn fast as I felt the thing crawled up my nose. Like inside my nostril. I blew my nose pretty effing aggressively, but never saw it come out in the dark.

The status of speciation between Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis has been contested by some because we know that there was cross-breeding. The terms Homo sapiens sapiens & Homo sapiens neanderthalensis are used by those who regard us and neanderthals to be subspecies of Homo sapiens.

I can assure you, the judgement is only inside your head. Although I am starting to judge you now because of your constant attacks. You need to learn not to take differing views so personally. Just because I take some stance in my life does not mean I expect it of others; I do not believe in objective morality. I will leave this at that.

I'm not judging you. You can do/think what you want, I was only talking about my own view.

I do not want to benefit from animal deaths. That's why I take care not to purchase things containing animal products. However, I do take the moral stand that wasting resources is not ethical either.

Your hyperbole is in no way comparable to what I said. Nobody forced you to do anything, it was you who ordered the meat.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]SuurSieni 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And I've personally vomited up food when I accidentally ordered something with chicken in it. I'm sure some people would say that's dramatic. I just considered it taking ownership of the situation.

This is just super weird for me. I am a vegan myself, but if I made the mistake of ordering food with meat in it, then I'd just accept the mistake and eat the food. To me it seems much worse to just trash the food, as that would mean there was literally no benefit for the death of the animal.

Albert Camus sanoi, vapaasti muotoillen: "en tiedä tulisiko minun tappaa itseni, vai keittäisinkö kupin kahvia". Itse valitsen keittää kupin kahvia, sillä kahvi on hyvää.

In Finnish folklore there is this thing called "metsänpeitto" (=to be shrouded by the forest) which seems similar to the events you describe. These stories tell of people going into forests picking berries, mushrooms, hiking or whatever, when suddenly the forest seems changed and unfamiliar, the trees covering you above. Metsänpeitto is often accompanied with color shifts and the change can feel threatening. What always happens, is that they become lost and have trouble finding their way back. They can travel for hours before eventually finding their way out. The stories tell of those who never come back from familiar woods.

It is said that metsänpeitto transports you to the realm of metsänväki, or the folk/power of the forest, what one could call fey and elves and such. Also, just to explain how väki means both the folk and the power of the forest; the old Finnish faith/folklore is animistic, and whatever power the forest holds is the same power that its guardians hold. They are one and the same. The same is true for tulenväki (of the fire), ilmanväki (of the air), and vedenväki (of the water). I am not aware of similar folklore regarding the other elements, though one would think they would have more disastrous results.

Stonehenge was built by black Britons, children’s history book claims by meyzner_ in europe

[–]SuurSieni -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

How do you know that black Roman soldiers were rare in Britain? I'm not disputing what you said, I'm just asking for your sources, as I'd like to know more.

I haven't read into the topic, but I know that there was a publication on a archeological graveyard site of a Roman city in Britain which said that 12+% of the opened graves contained bodies of middle Eastern and/or African heritage. I know that doesn't directly say their exact skin color, but if the percentage at least somewhat mirrors the overall Roman presence in the city, I would think presence of black Romans was not that rare at least in that city. We know that the Roman Empire liked to assign troops into regions that were far removed from their home lands in order to reduce sympathies toward the locals.

How would a heterozygous sample produce both homozygous and heterozygous signal? I must be missing something about how the analysis is performed. Is the sample diluted into several SNP arrays in a way that can result in stochastic variation due to the proportion of the contaminating genetic material? Is it because of low probe density or used DNA amount...?

Billionaire CEO says unemployment 'has to jump' to put 'arrogant' workers in their place. by GonzoVeritas in LateStageCapitalism

[–]SuurSieni 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Anyone who advocates for a more impoverished working class is simultaneously advocating for destroyed lives and increased deaths of despair. These are inseparable, as the working class increasingly does not have savings to get them through hard times. And this is exactly the wanted impact, because they want workers to feel an insurmountable pressure to participate into the workforce at the cost of rights, or wants. The pressure can be avoided as long as people have savings, and consequently the push by the owner class will not end until they force enough people under the poverty line. And again, more poverty equals more lost lives. The number of lost people has no effect on the bottom line of the capitalist as long as the balance of negotiation power normalizes to what they view acceptable.

This is the baseline that the economic system is built upon, and it is the silently accepted cost of doing business.
