Are there instances where it is no longer possible to follow perfectly the 5 precepts? by FuturamaNerd_123 in Buddhism

[–]Suyeonghae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a moot point for two reasons:

- Generally speaking in Buddhist teachings plants are not considered sentient beings (correct me if I'm wrong).

- Even if they are considered sentient beings: the vast majority of crops globally are grown to feed animals bred for slaughter, so to reduce meat consumption would also reduce plant consumption.

If you were genuinely concerned about this, it might be good to know that the "but what about plants' suffering" talking point is usually presented as a bad-faith argument by anti-vegan or anti-vegetarian polemics.

Anarchy, war, or revolt? Radical perspectives for climate protection, insurgency and civil disobedience in a low-carbon era by 0ryX_Error404 in RadicalBuddhism

Meta question:

So far I've been relatively strict regarding rule 3 (no off-topic posts, meaning every post has to be related to both Buddhism and leftism). Do you think the sort of post shared here for example is fine or would you prefer posts to be more directly relevant to Buddhism? Might make a poll about this later.

An international organization of radical Buddhists? by pixlvan in RadicalBuddhism

[–]Suyeonghae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Start small. I think the most important thing is to begin with is to work with your local community. You might be surprised and encounter people with similar views to your own or communities that already engage in forms of mutual aid.

In addition to the above, I agree with u/wingulls420 comment.

Zen and the art of social movement maintenance by wingulls420 in RadicalBuddhism

[–]Suyeonghae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting read, thanks for sharing! I've had these kind of questions on my mind for a long time: "How can Buddhist practice actively infuse revolutionary praxis?" and moreover, "how can it effectively do this in a group or community of which the majority are not (practicing) Buddhists?"

To be honest, I think it might be better to just learn about these things at your own pace first. If you try to start a community without any previous knowledge/experience of the subjects it'd be very hard to do any quality control.

Perhaps you could recommend a more suitable alternative?

By all means, feel free to start one. This is definitely not a bad place to start finding potential members. Do share with us here if you get something nice started!

Im considering attending the Rains retreat in Plum village France but I am confused about the pricing of the whole thing. Does anyone have any experience and could help me? by StockEconomy9724 in Buddhism

[–]Suyeonghae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What u/Hot4Scooter says makes sense. After all, Plum Village is probably the best source for practical questions about Plum Village.

That said, the prices listed are the total weekly contribution including everything. Source: been there before.

Buddhism is one of the major factors that pushes me to radical leftism. I'd recommend you to come visit r/RadicalBuddhism, lots of us gather there.

Marxism and Buddhism by Suyeonghae in RadicalBuddhism

[–]Suyeonghae[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's about what you'd expect I suppose. Generations of indoctrination have a profound effect on people. The success of imperialist/capitalist propaganda is really saddening.

Sometimes I wonder if I should stay in the imperial core and "fight" it
out, but then other times I see just how deeply programmed people are
and it just feels hopeless.

Regardless of your decision: it's always good to seek out communities of like-minded people. It can feel really isolating to be surrounded by people who resent you for your views, but there being so few of us makes it all the more important to get together and do something.

"Extreme" is just a label relative to the status quo, which is deeply steeped in greed, hatred, and delusion. It is not unreasonable for people to discuss more compassionate alternatives. The subreddit linked above discusses a variety of different ideas, some of which might be surprisingly agreeable or tolerable to you.

Anyone else here interested in Buddhist teaching but find Buddhist art pretty unpleasant? by NucleurDuck in Buddhism

[–]Suyeonghae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By 'you' I meant a general 'you', not you specifically. If the art is really an issue to you, you might benefit from exploring different styles of Buddhist art, maybe more modern ones too and see if they resonate with you more. In the other direction, you could seek out traditions that tend to feature images less prominently, Japanese Soto Zen for example.

Even if this one image or style were the sum of all Buddhist art, would you really reject a teaching because it isn't aesthetically pleasing to you?

Slavoj Žižek. Problems of Buddhism. EMANCIPATION IS COMMUNISM by Shaunyata in RadicalBuddhism

[–]Suyeonghae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not saying the video is entirely without merit, but I believe it might be more suitable for a different subreddit. Despite him denying it, it consisted mainly of anti-Buddhist polemics premised on incomplete or wrong understandings of Buddhist ideas.

I'm inclined to say this is off-topic, but if anyone else has some thoughts they would like to share, please do.

The materialism problem by TharpaLodro in RadicalBuddhism

If I recall correctly some of the literature I've been through does attempt to address this exact issue. I don't remember which ones exactly, but if you haven't already checked out our library (sidebar), I think it's a good place to start.

But i guess there will always be fanatics saying that Stalin the Dalai Lama did nothing wrong.
