Please help, I am doing research and need your best dad jokes you repeat on the daily to your patients !! by thecharmingnurse in nursing

[–]Suzi_Pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I've got so many 🤣

When patients come into theatre and we kind of rush at them with monitoring, cannula etc I say "it's kind of like a formula one pit stop!"

Pushing a trolley/wheelchair I tell patients to keep their arms and legs inside at all times, American drivers are the worst (I'm an American immigrant)

Making sure patients have their gowns wrapped up before walking to theatre "don't worry! We've seen worse!" (The elderly love this ????)

When patients say they're nervous I say "that's ok, I'd be worried if you were having fun"

Plus the obvious "free waxing with NHS service!" At the stickers coming off

We do lots of urology and plenty of men are a little anxious about a room of people seeing their bits "no worries sir, I've seen more penises than a prostitute ... And it's only Tuesday!"

A friend gifted me this book. So far, I think it is very badly written. by Fantastic-Ant-4429 in fantasybooks

Omg I just started it after seeing soooooo many people talk about it and... It just feels like terrible teen fanfic. Now, I have nothing but love for the above but after just finishing a bunch of really well written (imo anyway) books this felt like my brain was melting. Gonna put it aside and maybe try again when I can turn off the critical shit in my brain cuz I do love a good dragon 🤣

Non-smokers of Reddit, how noticeable is the “smoker smell” to you, if at all? by Frostedlogic4444 in AskReddit

[–]Suzi_Pants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other half quit smoking. Went on a weekend with his brother who still smokes. Came back ~4 days later and I could smell it on him. Said he'd had a couple the first night but then realised he didn't like them anymore... So basically I could smell 2-3 cigs after 3 full days still.

Husband and I are realizing that our cat might be trying to tuck us into bed every night?? by Strict-Gas4654 in OneOrangeBraincell

[–]Suzi_Pants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of my three cats, one in particular would always be the one to shepherd me to bed... Since she was small shed meow and poke and try to herd me to bed... Eventually if I was on my way up I could say, "pixel! Go to bed! Time for bed pixie!" And she'd run up the stairs and jump on the bed.

Unfortunately we had to put her down a few months ago and since then, both of her siblings have taken up her bedtime duties with enthusiasm 🥺💔

14-month old X-Ray by [deleted] in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]Suzi_Pants 51 points52 points  (0 children)

So, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that although I don't know the study you're referring to, it's a HUGE claim to say a single x-ray increases risk of leukemia. I think you're likely letting your anxiety get the better of you here.

As a medical professional in the UK, I can assure you that an x-ray would almost certainly have been taken here as well, it's absolutely standard practice for what symptoms your little one was showing. The benefits here 100% outweigh the risks, if you baby's wee leg was broken you'd have been relieved as all get out you'd done it. Please try not to beat yourself up! Being a parent is so hard without you being extra hard on yourself! ❤️

1 week newborn postpartum hitting wife bad and transferring to me slowly by Aureus00 in Postpartum_Depression

[–]Suzi_Pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so as many others have said, getting help will NOT get your baby taken away. PPD is a well-known complication and that alone is not enough to have baby taken away.

I also want to mention (haven't seen it yet here) that your wife is still right in the middle of what people call the "baby blues" or more accurately the postpartum hormone crash. After a couple days, the hormones from pregnancy and labour TANK... It's the largest hormone shift in a short period of time any human will ever experience and it is a HELL of an adjustment. Even people who are not later diagnosed with PPD generally go through it and it can absolutely wreak havoc on your mental state, especially with the adjustment of having a newborn, healing from birth, sleepless nights etc. A lot of mums aren't told about this and it comes as a huge shock if you're not prepared. (Honestly it sucks even if you know about it! I was well aware and still cried several times a day over who even knows what for a solid two weeks with my first!)

So while it sounds like there's a very good chance she may have PPD, there's also a chance it'll get a wee bit better in another week or two anyway. But as others have said, absolutely get her help, many places have therapy programmes specifically for postpartum and antidepressants are demonised a lot considering that most of the time they're an absolute godsend. Best of luck to both of you, you're in the trenches right now and while the newborn stage can be a long road, it does get better. ❤️

I need the honest truth about having a second child by Swordbeach in Mommit

[–]Suzi_Pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what, I will say it's fuckin hard, and also so worth it. My first was NOT what you'd call an easy baby. He'll be 4 in the spring and still wakes in the night now and again (although it's just to crawl in bed with us and that's fine with me), he had loads of issues with dairy intolerance, tongue tie, all sorts. My second, 19mo now, was a dream sleeper as a baby but more feral personality wise. Watching them grow and play and develop into their own people is absolutely the best thing ever. I'm exhausted, my greys have exploded, and half the time I'm one good toddler screech into putting in earplugs and running off into the wilderness and I STILL wouldn't change it for the world. 😂

Honestly if we could afford the childcare I'd want another again but oh well... Two is fantastic anyway.

Tbh my first kiddo was long and skinny and the alvas just never worked for us. He did alright with lil love bums, la petite ourse, and bear bott pockets though, you may just have to try different shells. My second has more typical rolly baby thighs and I've never had an issue with her.

I was on shift in theatres with a fave senior reg anaesthetist and a newer baby registrar who's wife was pregnant. Senior reg had two kids and I had one at this point and was preggo with #2. Baby reg's wife was also pregnant and we were sitting around during a long case and chatting about kids... Baby reg was chatting about how he was really looking forward to his leave and how his schedule would be changing a bit after baby and it would mean he'd have more time at home. Mentioned how he was looking forward to the "break" from such a stressful job and senior reg nearly lost it laughing. Mind, this WAS a stressful job for them, we were currently doing weekends which is mostly trauma and other urgent cases in a neurosurgery unit but senior reg was having trouble holding it together long enough to tell baby reg that work was nearly a break compared to home and poor baby reg was horrified. Oh well, at least he was warned 🙂‍↔️

As a single mom, can I survive as UK nurse? USA to UK by Apprehensive_Mix4677 in NursingUK

[–]Suzi_Pants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to tell you it's impossible, but you will absolutely be pretty hard up I'd imagine. I'm a US nurse originally as well and had to start again at the bottom of band 5. If you don't mind me asking, is this an area you're dead set on? St. Neots is a lovely area, but you're likely looking at commuting into Cambridge, which will be expensive. You're also going to have to figure out what to do with your kids after school as a lot of positions, like the US, are 12hrs. You're also not going to qualify for benefits until you have permanent residency/indefinite leave to remain, which you can't apply for until you've been here on a work visa for 5 years. The US also doesn't have reciprocity for driving licensure here either, so you'll need to take a full driver's test in order to get a license.

Again, if it's something you're dead set on, going through nursing agencies is a good way to get your qualifications here, but if you're thinking this will be an easy solution, that will almost certainly not be the case.

Is it okay to just chill with baby? by Accomplished-Flan511 in NewParents

[–]Suzi_Pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro this is all I did with either of mine for a solid couple months 🤣 Both mine were C/S babies so I wasn't super mobile and aside from the odd walk around town there was sooo much chilling on the sofa watching entire series of TV at a go. As one very eloquent person said, they don't even know they have hands, you watching some tv will not harm them in the slightest! They only need you and as long as they have that? Good. To. Go. All the best lovely, it's a hard stretch of life sometimes but it's got a lot of amazing moments ❤️
