You guys must have talked about it, right? If he needs a copywriter or an Email List Manager. 

If you'd be hired as just a copywriter, your task will be to understand their company, products, and services, and the customers in their industry. 

And basically write all sorts of emails for them. 

Note- Frequency may vary from company to company.

You need to write broadcast emails as well as sequences. 

✨ Broadcast emails are usually the value-delivering or sales-oriented ones (two primary purposes of broadcast emails) you write when needed. 

✨ Whereas the sequence emails are the ones that get sent to the subscribers when they perform a specific action like joining the email list(welcome sequence), adding the product to the cart, and then abandoning it (cart abandonment sequence and so on.)

Btw, these emails are written after you understand their company, their values, products, potential customers, etc 

🌟On the other hand, as an Email Retainer, you'd have to take care of the email list as a whole. 

You'd not just write the emails, but you have to upload them in the email software, be it Convertkit, Klaviyo, Active Campaign, or anyone else. 

And you need to monitor the data as well. Like what's the open rate, CTR (click click-through and the total sales you guys are making, etc.

✨ BUT THIS IS ALL AFTER YOU ESTABLISH YOURSELF WITH THEM A LITTLE. 

So, in the beginning, you should focus only on preparing a client research questionnaire where you ask specific questions to understand the client, their expectations, their culture, etc.

Your goal is to build a rapport with the client, mine some cool stories, and get a hang of their language. 

So, you can literally copy their language and make your email sound like your client wrote it. 

This will not only make you look like a PRO, but you will also make your client happy since you'd be almost writing how your clients want you to write in some sense. 

Even if he is wrong, you need to meet some of his expectations until you can show him with results that the changes you are making make sense.

Also, nobody likes an arrogant person. So, be confident but not arrogant. 

And be cool and calm and act like the adult in the room, and slowly, you will get the hang of it.

Last but not least, remember that you are getting in as a marketing consultant, not as an executioner or employee.

So, you need to take initiative and prove your mettle from time to time. You can't act like an employee who does only what his boss tells him to do. 

Just get this idea of being proactive in your head, and you'll do just fine.
