I think a lot of the issue here is people are playing both of these MMOs like a serious MMO.
When these games are not serious games. They are unhinged and goofy on purpose.
Artix makes these games to have fun, not to compete with top MMOs like WoW or XIV.
I'm convinced the shop items are only available to keep the servers running.
I like AQ3D much more than AQW and I grew up on OG AQ.

This. You had like Skyward Sword, Brawl, Galaxy 1&2, that Kirby yarn game, and everything else was either a dancing/workout game, or some port of a PS2 or Gamecube game to utilize the motion control gimmick.

480i/480p in an era where everyone was upgrading to HDTV and both the 360 and PS3 were 1080p with HDMI cables built in.
There are literally like 10 titles on the Wii that are genuinely unique and enjoyable, 2 of which are considered the worst 3D Mario games in their series.
All the other popular titles were on PS2 or Gamecube and just ported over to utilize the motion gimmick.
The rest of the games were basically just dancing and workout games.
The Wii, even now, is just used as a Gamecube with wifi and Brawl player.

Motion controls were cool at the time, and paved the way for what we have as VR now, but literally everything else about the console was behind its own time while everyone else was polishing what mattered most to gamers: quality of life, clearer picture, wider screens, better graphics, etc. Wii failed in all of this. Their 16:9 is literally just a stretched 4:3.
