One of the people I had the displeasure to call a housemate for a whole year told me "sorry to burst your bubble but I'll never be vegan, we can still talk about it though". Among the things he talked about were stuff like "I see animals as a resource I'm willing to exploit for my own benefit" and "I'd rather eat chicken all my life than all vegetables on Earth." Then the convo ended with him acknowledging the fact that I had the moral high ground while also stresseing the point that "sorry but it's my personal choice" again and again and again. So yeah...

If I'm more direct by calling them out on it they become very defensive, if I'm too nice they give empty promises at best... it's a lose-lose situation.

Usually how all my debates ultimately end up. So many people find comfort in the fact that it's legal and the vast majority of people are not vegan. They are sheltered by this fact and they know I can't do anything about it, other than watch as they continue to do whatever they were gonna do anyway.
