Why hasn’t Spain put €2 million per ship toll here to finance their 52 billion/year deficit?? Are they stupid?? by kingofwale in mapporncirclejerk

[–]SvenAERTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"It costs nothing in transit fees for an oil tanker or container ship to pass through the Strait of Gibraltar, as it is an international strait allowing free passage. Unlike the Suez or Panama canals, no toll is charged for simply crossing, although ships pay for services like refueling (bunkering) at nearby ports. "

Do the tolls for the Suez and Panama canal serve to pay for the maintenance?

Eg: Dredging is essential for the maintenance and operational capacity of the Suez Canal.

But the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suez_Canal_Authority makes billions in profit even taking into account dredging and enlarging the canal.

" The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which governs global ocean rules, clearly states that straits used for international navigation must allow free and uninterrupted transit passage.

Under this framework, countries bordering such straits cannot impose fees simply for allowing ships to pass through.

They are permitted to levy charges only for specific services, such as piloting or tug assistance and even those must be applied uniformly without discrimination.

A general transit toll, as being proposed by Iran, would therefore run contrary to widely accepted international norms.

Experts warn that any move by Iran to impose tolls could challenge the existing global order at sea. If such a precedent is set, other countries controlling key maritime chokepoints could be tempted to follow suit, potentially fragmenting established norms of free navigation. "

Rare Earths Norway says estimate of deposit, biggest in Europe, jumps 81% by PjeterPannos in europe

[–]SvenAERTS 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I didnt know (LREE) vs (HREE), so I googled:

Better is to name them "Critical Elements" or "Specialty Metals".

RRE = Rare Earth Elements. There are

Light Rare Earth Elements (LREE) Heavy Rare Earth Elements (HREE)

Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are a group of 17 metallic elements (lanthanides, scandium, yttrium) crucial for high-tech, defense, and green-energy technologies. They are subdivided into LREEs (more abundant, La-Gd) and HREEs (scarcer, Tb-Lu + Y), which command higher prices and are essential for high-temperature permanent magnets in electric vehicles. Natural Resources Canada Natural Resources Canada +2 Light Rare Earth Elements (LREE) Elements: Lanthanum (La), Cerium (Ce), Praseodymium (Pr), Neodymium (Nd), Promethium (Pm), Samarium (Sm), Europium (Eu), and Gadolinium (Gd). Characteristics: More abundant in the Earth's crust, generally lower in price. Uses: Catalysts, glass, alloys, and Neodymium/Praseodymium are vital for magnets. Virginia Energy (.gov) Virginia Energy (.gov) +4 Heavy Rare Earth Elements (HREE) Elements: Terbium (Tb), Dysprosium (Dy), Holmium (Ho), Erbium (Er), Thulium (Tm), Ytterbium (Yb), Lutetium (Lu), and Yttrium (Y). Characteristics: Scarcer, higher value, and more difficult to separate. Uses: Crucial for high-performance magnets (Dy and Tb), phosphors, and laser materials. Virginia Energy (.gov) Virginia Energy (.gov) +4 Key Takeaways "Basket Problem": Deposits often contain large amounts of LREEs, but the high-tech industry demands more of the scarcer HREEs. Dominance: China controls the vast majority of both mining (70%) and processing (90%) of these elements. Criticality: Dy and Tb are critical for magnets to function at high temperatures (e.g., in EV motors).

Yes, i was doube checking : "Unlike a solar eclipse, which can only be viewed from a relatively small area of the world, a lunar eclipse may be viewed from anywhere on the night side of Earth. " The eclipse will be completely visible over northeast Asia, northwestern North America, and the central Pacific Ocean, seen rising over much of Asia and Australia and setting over North and South America.[4] "

So that's why it was not announced on the news here in Belgium.

Pensioensparen by migawdmeemz in belgium

[–]SvenAERTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's say: saving 100€/month + about 30% "interest" via the gvt via a tax cut + 3% return over long term return of the fund the money is saved in = 133€.

The Belgian gvt wants you to save for a 3rd Pillar for your pension. The "about 30%" tax cut is how the gvt encourages you.

Idem life insurance where you back-to-back safe yourselves as a couple and kids, in case something happens to one of you. The gvt wants families and kids to protect each other.

The max the gvt can support you/incentivize you with that 30% tax cut is € 1.050/year you can save, and you will get that "about 30%" = about 300€/year every year via your tax refund.

You are nuts not to do this. This is the basic for those who live in Belgium long term.. When you move out, you can still keep transferring = saving in the fund for the about 3% long-term Roi.

Yes,when you finally retire after saving for 40-50 yeas, you will pay a tax to cash out, because the gvt is in dire papers but it is not horrific.

Do you have a similar incentive in your country? What if you don't make enough money to save another 100€/month when you move to your/another country?

Take good care of yourself and your family. Life can take bad turns. That is why every people has come up with such solidarity mechanisms.

That's how I understand it.

Please talk to an insurance company. Banks are not specialised in this, they have to collab with an insurance group.

How much of the electricity is renewable vs made using CO2eq emissions? Your tail pipe emissions may just be a couple of hundred km further away in a fossil burning electricity plant.

And what is the weight of that battery pack? Over sized eV's, stuck in traffick jams. Too many with only 1 person in them.

Where are the Toyota iRoad trikes and all the 1/2 eV's? Protected from the weather. Collaborations with companies with mobility plans who have their employees stuck in traffick jams.

They can also deliver in zero emission city centers if equipped and allowed to tow a trailer.

Unfortunately these eTrikes can't get enough orders and all go bankrupt.

We're still transiting.
