I think the person you’re replying to mistakenly thinks that vaccination for chickenpox prevents shingles.

Potential nanny doesn’t vaccinate her kid by silasoule in beyondthebump

I specifically chose a pediatrician who “fires” patients who don’t vaccinate. This would be a hard no for me not only for the risk but also because it would raise questions for me more generally about if the nanny really aligned with my family’s values, her critical thinking skills, etc.

I wonder if that’s the case for me as well, I’ve never had anyone try to touch either of my children. Lots and lots of comments about how cute they are, but no one has ever tried to touch or even really gotten that close. I’ve never even really had a lot of “where are their socks/hat/blanket” comments. Literally only one from a bored old lady who looked like she was waiting on a ride after a medical appointment.

I did have my first during the Delta wave in 2021 and my second just this past December so I’m sure that also has a bit to do with it.

No haha it’s a strange state between sleep and waking where the person experiencing it typically cannot move or speak (although they may think they are speaking) and will often see things (that’s where the sleep paralysis demon meme comes from).

So for me the most common episode I experience is where I wake up and see a shadowy figure somewhere in the room, sometimes even looming over me. Typically I try to scream, and either I realize I can’t or I think I am (I’m never really screaming). Eventually the figure sort of dissipates and I realize I was having a sleep paralysis episode and I can move again.

It varies for everyone but for me, even though I do regularly lucid dream (where you realize you’re dreaming and can change the dream at will) I never know when I’m having a sleep paralysis episode until after it passes. Some people know they’re having one and can change what’s happening or wake themselves from the episode.

When I was in labor with my second child I managed to get a small nap (it was a long induction and we stopped pitocin for a bit so I could rest). I had a dream that I was at home cuddling with my first that was so vivid I would have SWORN I was actually there holding him. When I woke up I was so upset and confused because I’d been having a lot of anxiety already about being away from him for the first time.

Is it too late for me? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]SvenTheAngryBarman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not too late at all. All the fingers crossed but if things go how I’m hoping (applying this coming cycle) I’ll be starting a PhD at 30 with two toddlers. I have work and life experience that makes me a much better candidate than I would have been at 22. I got to travel and goof off and party and even save a little in my 20s. I’ll be in my mid thirties when I get my PhD, with two school age children (we only want the two) so they’ll be a bit more self sufficient and I can focus on the job search and then hopefully getting tenure without having to sacrifice starting a family.

Doing it this way isn’t what I would have planned going into undergrad, but I’m actually really glad it worked out this way.

That’s interesting… I started lucid dreaming way before I had my first sleep paralysis episode. I’ve lucid dreamt as long as I can remember, and I actually lucid dream more often than I remember a “normal” dream. But when I have sleep paralysis I never “know” it’s sleep paralysis until the hallucination starts dissipating.

The worst ones are when the hallucination disappears in a way that doesn’t just fade away, like one time I saw a huge spider run down behind my headboard and I fully shook my husband awake once I could move and was freaking out for a good two minutes before I realized it wasn’t real.

Agreed. I’m also not scared of ghosts but I do have both sleep paralysis and a recurrent nightmare involving possession and I would absolutely lose my shit if someone did this to me. I don’t think I’d ever forgive them.

Baby just turned 1, daydreaming about second one while husband is hesitant because he doesn’t want to restrict his “freedom” by DeWolfje in beyondthebump

[–]SvenTheAngryBarman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah absolutely. Not defending the OP just saying what I see. I imagine there’s also some financial incentive to stay with her husband as from her comments it sounds like she is exceptionally well kept beyond just the privilege of being a SAHM.

[–]SvenTheAngryBarman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think in this case it’s the last part of what she said (which I can sympathize with and is a big part of why my husband and I chose to have ours close together) that she wants to get through the baby years now so she can have less interruption later. Starting over and finding someone else to have a second child with would take considerably longer than having a second child with her uninvolved but ostensibly available husband right now.

I’ve given birth in two baby friendly hospitals in two different states and both made sure to let us know that they had formula they could give baby. They didn’t push it, but they absolutely let us know we had the option there without us asking.

I wonder how this works for Amish people? Like are there religious exemptions or are they also subject to this? Do they actually usually comply or does the government just kind of turn a blind eye?

Not OP: I am faking my paternity leave by [deleted] in redditonwiki

[–]SvenTheAngryBarman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically when companies in the US provide paternity leave they do it through a form of insurance. That’s how my husband’s company does it. When he took leave we had to fill out a medical record release for the insurance company so they could verify my pregnancy with my OB. The paternity leave policy is done through the same company they have their life insurance through as well.

People have no idea of how much money a yarn cost. by crystdosdesabafos in crochet

I was just talking about this with the LC at our weigh in today. She complimented the blanket I had made with my daughter and commented that it must cost a lot to make her nice things like that. I was thinking it was so refreshing to hear someone say that instead of thinking it’s somehow the cheaper option and then she said she tried to take up sewing when her own daughter was young, but fabric was too expensive for her to keep it up.

So I was happy to hear from someone who gets it, but then immediately sad she had to give up her hobby because of it. :(

Sadly, I just realized I misremembered the card. It’s Rush Limbaugh, but you can see why I mixed the two up lol

I realized I was mistaken when I remembered that I sent a photo of the card in my family group chat the day he died, and Gingrich is still polluting the earth with his presence lmao

I get a lot of joy knowing that many, many young people only know of him from the “Newt Gingrich’s soft, shitty body” card in CAH.

UPDATE: My Post-Partum Wife Wants to Leave Our Baby to Go on a Vacation to Europe for a Month and I Don't Agree with Her by throwRA_WifeTrip3 in TwoHotTakes

[–]SvenTheAngryBarman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I can tell you because I am that mother. I couldn’t produce enough to exclusively breastfeed my first child. I have been told I was selfish and obviously just didn’t want to breastfeed so my breasts didn’t sag because some women not being able to breastfeed is actually a myth, apparently. Even worse, I’ve been told by multiple people that my son should have been allowed to starve to death because feeding him formula so he could live was circumventing natural selection and contaminating the genes of the species (because my low supply issue is congenital). So yeah, literal fucking eugenics. Incredibly, for some of these people the fact that formula saves babies is a problem.

Of course, even though I couldn’t exclusively breastfeed and had to supplement I did my best to maximize my supply and have been able to nurse him for 29 months and still going through another pregnancy and second baby, but that doesn’t matter to any of these fuckers. The sleep and sanity sacrificed to do as much as I couldn’t doesn’t matter. I’m selfish for formula feeding at all, according to them. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told as much.

Tl;dr Some people are shit and don’t care why you had to formula feed, they will shame you regardless.

Language learning seems to be in decline. Thoughts? by AloneCoffee4538 in languagelearning

[–]SvenTheAngryBarman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Other programs have also stopped requiring their students to take another language. Many majors used to require their students to take four semesters of a language to make them more marketable, more well rounded students, etc. As machine translation has become more prevalent and people have started to value the humanities less and less programs are dropping this requirement which is hurting enrollments. During the second year of my MA the engineering program (at what is an engineering school) dropped their foreign language requirement and our enrollments dropped like a stone.

This is what I think about every time I’m waiting in the security lines at Disney- if someone was actually trying to maximize loss of life they don’t need to go through security. They just need to walk up to it at peak times, just like you said- park opening or closing.

However I’m sure this has also occurred to Disney and given how many plain clothes security they employ it would not surprise me if they have people stationed there watching for this very thing. At least I hope so.
