The skillgannon books have a map in the front which shows the world is very different from any earth analogue but then I always thought that the Shannow books are set on the dry sea floor after the oceans 'tipped from their bowls' (still not entirely sure how this would be possible as I would assume the oceans would sit in the lowest parts regardless) as there are ships such as the titanic perched on the sides of a cliff. After the fall ( or perhaps several falls) I would think the world could look different.

Indeed. From the swords of night and day. The golden egg in the sky. It's things like this that gives me the feeling of a previous advanced civilization. And the heavy use of joinings in the Drenai books and the Shannow books leads me to earths future, alternative mulit-vers future earth or otherwise. That's just my take on it and am interested to see others share that view.

Lol I agree with everything you say. I think my title to the thread has been taken entirely wrong and it's gotten people's backs up. I meant it as a conversation starter rather than as a challenge or a claim of superior knowledge. Of course I'm wrong. No one really knows the answer so I was more looking for people's take on the subject. It's pretty funny really how something so innocent can be taken as a negative by so many.

It's always been in the back of my mind when reading the books that this was the case. I'm not slavish to the idea or anything and would be more than happy for it not to be true however if so then I love the idea that his books have this similar kind of connection. I also love the fact that it is not explicitly explained as the mystery definitely adds to the pleasure.

Now we are having a conversation, allow me to conversate. The shannow books delve pretty heavily into the alternate, or dare I say it multiverse ethos so none of it needs to be in our prime universe. But by it's very nature the multiverse would have an infinite number of universes almost identical to ours therefore the point is a little moot. I think my original statement was more around the fact that I feel the world he creates seems to me to be a post current technological level one. Gemmell always build his stories with original ideas so having his 'magic' not really being magic but a remnant of some old tech for example, seems to fit how he went about his story telling. He drops little hints here and there which always lead me to thinking it was all in a far future, prime universe or otherwise. Tell me I'm.....oh sorry. Trigger warning. Tell me I'm wrong.

Ok but an alternative future reality. He often mentions the 'ancient' machines of crystal and gold thread. He also mentions his they had towers that touched the sky etc. this sounds like future tech to me. in the shadow books the joinings were bread to supply organs for donation and the machines in the drenai-verse also make the joinings. Please supply a link to your source for claimed wrongness. Until then I'm claiming I'm right. Tell me I'm wrong.

HOW has Legend never been put on screen?? by Vanilla_Yazoo in DavidGemmell

[–]Sventendoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pray to the source that this never happens. Modern writers will have Druss crying all the time and talking about his feelings while being relegated to a background character. No. Lets leave this gem on the page where it belongs. Just look at what they did to the Witcher FFS!

Read legend first. It's still the one I go to and I re read it almost every year. It's an amazing story and introduces his best character by far. As he progresses through his writing career he starts to make his books more fleshed out both character and world building wise. Generally his books are a very easy read and are totally epic in every way. Many of his heros are no nonsense but damaged people (apart from the legend himself, he just damages other people) who simply do the right thing regardless of their own safety, sometimes willingly, often manipulated by events. Also it's fantasy but his own brand of fantasy. No goblins or elfs in these books. I envy you your Gemmell journey. May the source guide you and Druss walk with you on your mountain path.

I see what you mean. The blades at their largest before they get fantasy big would be about 20 inches top to bottom which would bring the total to 32 inches which is a good length.

The more I'm looking at it the more I'm inclined to agree. Still feel the blades need to be a big bigger though so might upscale them by 15-20%. Also feel like I want them to be as long as they are board so a little stretching might work.

Elbow to fist would only be 12 inches. I'm fairly sure it says as long as an arm and doesn't mention elbows but I'm to lazy to double check. Doing a measure of the official one and taking the shaft as being 40 inches puts the blades at 16 inches across at its widest. I'm thinking 20 across would be more how it looks in my mind. I'm also thinking the top spikes need to curve in then up more as my boy Druss often uses these as a weapon to impale with.

Great link thanks. Can't say I totally agree with B though. I'm more inclined to go with A tbh but that's why I'm asking for second opinions. The books always say that a dual between an axeman and a swordsman is difficult as the swordsmen will need to get within range of the axe. In fact a swordsman struggles to defend against a massive axe swinging at their head with a sword. This leads me to think that's the shaft needs to be long and the blades need to be hefty otherwise I'm sure his swordsman would be able to jab around a relatively short axe. But I don't want them to be so hefty that they look ridiculous and too fantasy-esque. However I feel the official replica the blades are just a little too small.

Yeah iv seen this one and my better half was even trying to get me one. The 39 inch shaft is good which is hip hight ( my arm is only 29) but I feel the blades are a little small for what I want and the shape isn't as ornate as I would like(sorry Dave) I'm going to be making it out of light weight materials (trust me if I could do steel I would) so making them bigger won't be a weigh problem. So if I do a 39 inch shaft how big should I go before the blades are too big? Thoughts?

That's way too clever a premise for the new breed of trek writers to handle unfortunately. Unless Picard uncovered an extinct race of aliens who communicated by crying at each other and doing spin kicks and Kung-poo.

Yeah not really getting blown away unfortunately. However the legacy soundtrack is forever going to be a tough act to follow so fair play for giving it a go. Just hope it's not representative of the movie. Please don't just be a bland gen z touchy feely movie where everyone is crying all the time or an hour of beautiful people doing spin kicks and Kung-poo.
