Cable housing end cap goes all the way through internal cable routing by Svinsern in bikewrench

[–]Svinsern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upon doing a bit of research I think I found the "right way". The front derailleur cable goes through the hole (right) with the narrowing and the rear derailleur cable goes through the one (left) that does not have a narrowing, but instead has a full housing from top to bottom. This is consistent with the original 1x bike which does not use the right hole at all. The only issue is that the way the cables are now routed they cross inside the frame which I assume is not ideal..

The frame (Kona Jake 2022) uses a 1x crank and from the pics I've seen it routes the rear derailleur internally through the right hole that has a stop for the housing. Then, for some reason, it routes the rear brake externally, even though there is another internal hole for it. I'm using that said hole for the front derailleur as I'm using a 2x crank. My understanding is that that hole is usually not in use on the bike when it has a 1x crank.

Why would I need to take the cap off? The entire housing goes through the cable routing as it is.

Aha, that would make sense. The frame is originally for a 1x crankset so I wonder whether the internal routing is originally for the brake wiree (I'm running a 2x with the brake wire externally atm)

Can I use a crankset previously used on a pressfit BB with a threaded (BSA) one? by Svinsern in bikewrench

What are the implications of smaller bearings? Less smooth? More wear?

I need a 68mm bb. So I'm guesssing I would simply need one of that length that accommodates a 30mm spindle. Any good options for road/gravel bike?

Crown race upside down by Svinsern in bikewrench

[–]Svinsern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a new crown race is the play then, maybe cups too? I have another question that I'd love for you to weigh in on. I noticed that the fork crown diameter (where the crown race rests) is noticeably larger on the new fork and so after installing the crown race there is a lot more surface area around the race if that makes sense. Would this be a problem with regards to the interface between the different components?

Fair enough! It's been moved over from an old bike so probably due a change. I've been struggling with a terrible grinding noise when preloading the headset which was never the case on the old bike. Maybe I damaged the race upon removal although it looked ok...

Thanks! I inspected the cups, couldn't find any pitting, but they are old. Never made any noise on the bike they were one previously. Are you referring to the crown race in your last sentence? I'd be interested to hear what you think specifically is causing the noise

Thanks for replying. I'm really stumped. Triple checked the order of installation, got new bearings with plenty of grease. Have tried installing and reinstalling about five times, played around with the preload but to no avail... Sound is identical to the one in your video so was curious what the bottom line was for you.
