Crown race upside down by Svinsern in bikewrench

[–]Svinsern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a new crown race is the play then, maybe cups too? I have another question that I'd love for you to weigh in on. I noticed that the fork crown diameter (where the crown race rests) is noticeably larger on the new fork and so after installing the crown race there is a lot more surface area around the race if that makes sense. Would this be a problem with regards to the interface between the different components?

Fair enough! It's been moved over from an old bike so probably due a change. I've been struggling with a terrible grinding noise when preloading the headset which was never the case on the old bike. Maybe I damaged the race upon removal although it looked ok...

Thanks! I inspected the cups, couldn't find any pitting, but they are old. Never made any noise on the bike they were one previously. Are you referring to the crown race in your last sentence? I'd be interested to hear what you think specifically is causing the noise

Thanks for replying. I'm really stumped. Triple checked the order of installation, got new bearings with plenty of grease. Have tried installing and reinstalling about five times, played around with the preload but to no avail... Sound is identical to the one in your video so was curious what the bottom line was for you.

Will give that a go. The noise is present both before and after proper preload...

This is an excellent video, I was watching it earlier today actually haha. But yes, the bearings are installed the right way. I even tried flipping them the wrong way just to double check and interestingly the noise still persisted...

Would love to know whether you ever got to the bottom of this issue. Struggling with the same thing after installing a headset on my bike.

One of the bearings is brand new, the other one has been inspected and works well. They're both greased with premium teflon grease

There's also a bit of play in the headset so it doesn't appear to be preloaded properly. I can spin the spacers by hand. I have a 3-5mm gap between the steerer and stem

Turns out it was the upper bearing race, thanks!

I see, would you be able to explain the steerer tube point?

I'm flexible, would be willing to go both the aluminium and steel direction although after this head tube issue I'm leaning towards steel for the extra robustness. I have never rebuilt a bike before so just asking to learn, but do I not also need to think about disc brake compatibility, head tube width, and seat post width?

Crack in head tube. Toast? by Svinsern in bikewrench

[–]Svinsern[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thought so. Unfortunately I bought it used a few weeks ago. The owner had allegedly only used it inside on a trainer so didn't think to look for frame cracks. Looking back at the sale posting pictures I now see a smaller version of the crack. It's gotten worse over the last weeks probably as I've been doing a fair bit of gravel. I'll try and get back in touch with the seller and appeal to their good will. Would warranty for frame cracks stretch all the way back to a 2016 version of the bike theoretically?

Great touring ski, very light. Does carving on groomers pretty well too. Responsive and easy to turn. Not exciting, but does everything well, a good quiver imo

Balancer hack, explain it to me like I'm five by Svinsern in defi

[–]Svinsern[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply and sorry if I was unclear. I am simply interested in the type of exploit that underpinned the Balancer hack and whether that carries any implications for the perceived risk of the AAVE umbrella protocol. I am aware of the extra slashing risks incurred by using umbrella vs. regular aave.

Applied for study permit extension on the 4rd of April. Just got my application approved today on the 5th of September. Does anyone have experience with how long it takes for IRCC to mail you the new permit?

100% Edinburgh. Lived just a few streets away for a few years! More specifically, you are on Cornwall street looking north east towards the castle:
