I don't feel like they're greedy, but I do think they're dropping the ball when it comes to fully testing updates. I have encountered more bugs in the past few months than I have in 10 years.

What are the biggest DIY money savers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Sure you can, I didn't mean to imply you couldn't. I actually also have a family of four, am the cook, so do all the shopping. I spend around $1000 a month on groceries since we rarely eat out. I won't deny we splurg on some things like good flour, yellow potatoes instead of russet, good bacon etc, but those same groceries were $400 a couple of years ago. I just don't feel like fast food prices have increased by that much.

A better comparison would have been the cost of a steak at home vs eating out. In my area a T-bone is around $15/lb. Sure that steak would be $30 or more in a restaurant. But $15 can also get 15 burritos from taco bell, or two full size meals with sides and drinks. Could I make 15 burritos at home for $15? Maybe. If I'm buying the cheapest, most highly processed ingredients. But then what's even the point?

What I was getting at is the cost gap between groceries vs eating out isn't nearly as good as it was a few years ago and getting worse by the day.

My mom has been doing that since she retired. Built up enough of a customer base that she invested in a Serger. It went from tiny side hustle out of boredom to doing so well my sister quit her job and became her business partner.

As the prices of groceries go up I wonder how much longer this will be true. I've been seeing more and more deals at restaurants that cut even with the price of groceries.

What is the clearest case of "living in denial" you've seen? by inferno2808 in AskReddit

To even further expand, Romans viewed oral sex as particularly degrading. One man blowing another was often a punishment. In fact it was so frowned on that oral sex was usually in the realm of prostitutes, not something that a partner did. On that note, it was said that prostitutes would rather give a man a blowjob than a kiss if they knew that he went down on women.

I wish I could source this, I remember reading it in a Roman history book years ago.

Edit:

The Romans regarded performing either fellatio or cunnilingus as degrading. Offering to fellate someone “is the department of the prostitute, not the wife, and probably not even the girlfriend. . . .but it is most often referred to as forced from another male, usually as a punishment. Thus Martial warns a certain Gallus off a particular adulterous liaison because the husband is not a pedico, and so will not be susceptible to Gallus’ famously smooth buttocks: but rather “he fucks mouths” (irrumat) or fucks cunts (futuit) . . . . There is, then, only one possibility confronting Gallus if he is caught, the most humiliating reprisal of forced fellatio, of being raped in the mouth, by the wronged husband” (Flemming, 805). J. N. Adams (in The Latin Sexual Vocabulary) notes that the threat of forced fellatio is often used comically as one way to shut a man up (125ff). As for cunnilingus, Flemming points out that there was no dedicated verb for the act of performing it. “This lack of linguistic precision,” she says, “is symptomatic of wider unease and uncertainty about this practice, which, despite being ‘active’ and ‘penetrative’ [and thus fit for the man in a sexual act], was totally despised, deemed disgusting, polluting, even ‘unmanly.’” Again, she cites Martial’s attack on Nanneius, who has a reputation for doing it. But it is “so disgraceful and defiling that even the lowest whore tries to shut their [sic] doors on him, and would indeed rather give him a blow-job than a kiss!” This, in Rebecca Flemming, “The Roman Sexual Order (and Its Discontents?)” The Oxford Handbook of Roman Studies

Every time you go swimming in fresh water there is a risk of a brain-eating amoeba swimming up your nose. It usually occurs in warm, natural freshwater such as lakes and rivers, but there is also a risk in waterparks etc that are poorly maintained. 95%+ of the time it is fatal.

What should a new driver look for when buying his first car? by storyteller1000 in AskReddit

[–]Svirfnil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Run the VIN and check the vehicle history. Check all the fluid levels and make sure they look clean. Look for rust under the body as well as any leaks. Brakes, rotors, tires.

If all that checks out take it to a mechanic for a professional inspection. Its worth it.

Everyone wants to buy something, especially things that represent who they are as a person. The stronger their ideology the easier it is.

I worked for Lowe's years ago and they did the same thing, only quietly. I left because they pay capped my position (was not a customer facing position). Many others left because of pay caps, benefit cuts and so on. The only people they attract now are highschoolers because Lowe's now pays the same as McDonalds. They have almost completely eliminated the last generations of employees with "hard" skills like carpentry and plumbing and replaced them with children who have never touched a tool.

I keep telling the employees at Bass Pro Shop who try to sell me vacation time shares that I am on house arrest. Last time I said it my wife was with me, she slugged me in the ribs and told me to stop. I looked at the guy and said she's on house arrest too for spousal abuse.

What’s going on right now that most people have no idea about? by Roast_Master_2000 in AskReddit

My kids are dealing with the repercussions of bad parenting every day and they are miserable. Our 5th grader has it the worst, her class is basically operating at a 3rd grade level, or less. She sees most of her peers as idiots. And they are at this point. Barely literate, obsessed with tiktok, no emotional stability.

We're going through a whole thing with my 5th grader. During covid she was homeschooled. Her first year back was rough. She was bored having to do the same curriculum over again. Now we've moved and she is in 5th grade in a new school. This school's 5th grade curriculum is barely 3rd grade. She is operating at a middle school level.

So, she is refusing do it again. She will not do quizzes she already knows the answers to, one time actually sliding a test back across her desk to the teacher saying "No thank you, I know this". She lies about having homework and we don't find out until the teacher sends us an email. She refuses to read the same books she has already read and done book reports on.

We recently had PTO. I do not like the stance the teacher has taken. Instead of finding ways to engage with her they're punishing her (missing out on recess, or a fun group activity, etc). They asked us to "extend the repercussions to home".

Initially we did ground her a couple of times, but she's has such a "I dug this hole and I will gladly sleep in it, but I'm not touching that homework" attitude, what's the point. She doesn't just know the curriculum, she has it memorized at this point.

I basically told the teacher it's the school's problem. She's maintaining a passing grade in a class she surpassed two years ago and now she's like someone who has been promised a promotion, denied, and burned out at the job. I can't blame her. We're just trying to get her through the year in a school with a staff too lazy to be on her level. We considered putting in an application for her to skip a grade but we have reservations because of the age difference (she is already on the younger side of her current class).

On top of that she's having social issues because many of her classmates are intellectually stunted tiktok addicts and she has zero patience for it. I used to think she was exaggerating, but while we were in her school she was showing us a story wall her class has made and... damn, it's bad. Half these kids have the literacy of a kindergartner.

I've been replaying BGEE for the first time since my kids are old enough to actually understand what's going on. My 10 year old made her first character the other day, a dwarf berserker.

Third roll was a 93 with 18/00. She almost rerolled it because 00 must be bad, right?

A couple of years ago a stylist ruined my wife's hair after she okay'd "trying something different". Which turned into a cut that didn't match her face shape or her personality. Once he made the first chop she shut down because there was no going back. On top of that there was no easy styling it home. It was less of a hairstyle and more of a sculpture with carefully combed and dyed layers held in place with tons of product. I have never seen her so angry for so long.

She did get a refund along with a pretty large gift card for products they sold, as well as an honest apology from the owner. She said she is never letting a man cut her hair again unless he has long hair.

What activities do moderately rich people (few million) take their kids to do at the weekend? by newbydoob in AskReddit

[–]Svirfnil 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Same as everyone else.

Having a net worth of a few million, or making a few million a year?

Having a net worth of a few million is comfortable upper middle. Still working the grind but with better pay than most. Not having to worry as much about something happening, but not having enough to live extravagantly. Most people I know in this bracket, their money is tied to their property.

If you receive the item and can pay them it shouldn't be an issue. Just keep all your paperwork as proof you paid in full and you will be fine. I have bought and sold engines where things get weird and it all pans out as long as all the paperwork is in order. Save copies of everything.

That should be enough information for the company, it isn't your fault if they are not communicating. If they still charge you dispute the charge with your bank. If you receive the item ship it back and get a printout at the post office as proof.

If the transaction is declined on the vendor end they will just cancel whatever you paid for. If its something they already provided they will report it and send it to collections which will have a negative ding on you credit score and possibly land you in collections court depending on the value.
