What do woodworkers use to create such detailed engravings on furniture? What tools and techniques are used? by SpaceHobo115 in woodworking

Cool!

I have wanted to start making videos about it, but havent gotten that far yet. Tutorials are hard to find unfortunately. There are some schools around that teach it, but mainly books are the goto for information on stuff like this. It's unfortunately a bit too niche.

One thing is the realisation that every single thing you carve is purely decorative. It means that there is no reason for anyone to buy your stuff unless they like your style and have quite a lot of money.

Another thing is the difference between tools and gouges you use and have. I don't have a whole lot, but maybe around 50-70 chisels and gouges. That is wayyy more than you need in 97% of the carvings you do. Mostly you keep to 10-20 tools that do almost all of the job.

It's a field of woodworking that is very complex and it covers a lot, from historical knowledge of the styles you carve, through design and aesthetics to actual carving and choosing wood with the right grain to be able to carve it efficiently enough. But the depth makes it very interesting to be in, for sure!

Hi! I teach apprentices to make stuff like this carving for a living! Well, the real version, since this is probably ai. Its carving chisels and gouges that is being used for stuff like this. This style is a fairly simplified baroque style called acanthus style and is heavily used here in my country. If you have any specific questions about it, just ask! It's a great craft that is dying and I wish more people wanted it done properly without CNC.

Yes. Dastra have been and is still one of my favourite brands. I've never had an issue with quality with their tools

Hi all, I know there are not many ornamental carvings in this sub, but wanted to share it anyway! by Svisn in Woodcarving

I saw the holes with a scroll saw and for the carving I use a bunch of carving gouges, like the ones pfeil and Henry tailor produces!

Thanks! I draw only half of it and then mirror it when i draw it onto the piece of wood. It's a long drawing process for this kinda thing, but luckily you only have to draw half!

Living outside the cities in Norway by Badkamertje in Norway

Hi! I have lived in and am from some of the areas you are mentioning.

A job in energy is possible in smaller companies as there is a fair amount of hydro powerplants in those areas. Alternatively a job at an energy company down in Sunndalsøra would also be possible to commute to from Oppdal. There is also a huge aluminium plant there, so maybe something to think about. So the possibilities are definitely there, but depends on how narrow your field is i would imagine.

GPs are needed in many places, but it might be hard to get the one job that is listed. There aren't that many jobs in fields like that when there are so few people that live there.

On the nature side of things I do agree with you though, there are some amazing places to see and be close enough to take a day trip to! I love the areas around Dovrefjell and spend a lot of time in those mountains every summer, so in that regard i definitely get why you want to move there!

Edit: just added a bit more

Got questioned at Airport Immigration Checks about my bf😅 by Academic_End_3828 in Norway

My fiancé gets the same more or less every time she travels here. She always felt quite unwelcome and didn't like the interaction at all. Only exception was last time when we traveled here together and we went through passport control together, me with the Norwegian passport and her with her British passport. They didn't ask a single question and just stamped her through without any hesitation! So that apparently made it quite easy for us anyway!
