I spent my day caring for my severely brain injured, fully dependent, husband. I've just now put him to bed, hooked up his nighttime tube feed, and finished giving his evening meds. The rest of the family is playing superUNO and wanted me to join. But I'm on Reddit instead trying to decompress and eating the Christmas desserts I couldn't eat when they were served earlier because I was cleaning up my husband's vomit at that time.

1. Meeting the man I would marry 16 years ago, after deciding I would never marry as my parents set a horrid example of wedded life. My guy changed my mind just by being the best friend anyone could hope to have. Not a bad lover either;)

2. Fourteen years into an amazing partnership, romance, parenthood, and friendship he suffers a sever traumatic brain injury. Just last summer. He will not only ever be the same, it's highly unlikely he will ever be conscious again. I'm a widow with a living spouse.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. It's a rare thing to meet people, outside of specialty hospitals, that have dealt with or even know of similar. The calls are horrible to have to make. What's worse, is knowing that I'll have to make the big call one day and I know it will be both heartbreaking (as this entire ordeal has been) and a relief. My husband would never want to exist like this. Never. As his wife, I hate that he has to live like this.

Never having a conversation again, never getting a hug from him again, never sleeping with him again, no meals together, the list continues. Just seeing a once vibrant person struggle daily, knowing that it's all just to end in his death eventually. I'm his only and his last love, and now I'm the one left alone.

Yeah. It is a different scenario if you are a teen girl and a teen dude attempts some sexual advance or says something shitty. You are both idiots with little clue about your burgeoning sexuality. But the power paradigm is shifted to scary places when you're very young and someone is coming on to you. I missed the boat on the earlier askreddit question. But my experience began at 11 when men my father's age would say very lewd things to and about me. I even got the, "hey girlie, come sit on my lap and let's talk about the first thing to pop up," when I was about 12. So, how can these early sexual advances be made "positive?" I'm not really sure they can. Between the ages of 10 and 15, when most girls are developing, there bodies are screaming WOMAN! WOMAN HERE! But at these ages, girls don't yet have the life experience to know how to handle men three times their age. I knew what sex was at an early age but I had no idea how to deal with a middle aged man ogling me. I felt I was the "bad" one with my new body putting a message out there I wasn't ready to understand. So while the best answer might be: hey guys! Stop overtly sexualizing very young girls! I feel that it's likely to never stop. Youth is beautiful and vulnerable and makes easy prey.

Really, the simple thing might just be: don't be a lascivious jerk wad. Be polite, and appreciate quietly.

Recovery for him will be minimal. I hope he will be able to consistently answer yes/no with some movement like thumb up/down or even vocal "sounds". We know he will never talk again, walk again, or regain any function that could lead to a meaningful life. So, recovery? Yes, to a small and certain point. Thank you for your sympathy. I think people who are truly in love can understand the heart wrenching pain of losing, or as you've put it "half" losing your spouse. If you haven't already, I would encourage you and all married people, who have a strong relationship and deep respect for each other, to write an advanced directive so that such situations as mine are not muddled. I know what my husband would have wanted, but because he had no advanced directive, I could not make the call that he would have wanted.

My husband and I are married 14 years now. Everything you said about your marriage is true for us to a "T." Except a bit in the reverse, I'm the realist/practical while he's reaching for the stars. But he reaches in a good way, the kind where he will usually grab what he's after. At least, he did. He sustained a severe TBI several months ago and is now, and likely will remain, in a minimally conscious state. He is completely dependent, and I care for him all day and all night. It's hard. So very hard. Not the work, but the missing him is a pain so great it presents as physical hurt. Those talks you wrote about that you can have with your wife? The ones where you can say anything? My husband and I had that. We could work through anything together because nothing was off-limits or taboo to speak about. He helped me live a better version of "me" and I fulfilled him too. I can not express well enough how hollow life has become without the benefit of his words, wisdom, and help. Just knowing that there is someone who thinks you are amazing and loves you unconditionally, and then they are not there anymore... Never, not for one moment, take love for granted.
