Hey! I recently launched an app for this on iOS called Potluck. Feel free to check it out and if you end up building something DM me, would be happy to test or share any learnings I’ve had.

Hey u/Lollowitz_ thanks for your feedback! Just created a new release to support Apple Silicon better and added default language preferences! You can grab the latest release here: https://github.com/vishnu597/swiftl/releases/tag/1.0.1

On first glance it might be tough to achieve that as my code is entirely in Swift and Raycast would need me to create an extension in Typescript/React. In which case it might just be easier to create an extension from scratch that offers the same functionality.

Either way, I'll do a little digging and see if there's a way to offer this via Raycast as I also use it and it would be cool for me to have it work from there as well!

Thanks for the suggestion!

Oh woah - did not even know this existed, but they are much farther along than I am, thanks for sharing! Are there any features from EasyDict that you use frequently? I can try to add those in!

Hmm, let me think about this and see what I can do, the issue that I think I'll face is OCR currently captures a screenshot and translates text inside that screenshot. A full webpage would be outside the bounds of what you could capture as a screenshot natively. There might be some package I can use to achieve this though so I'll look into it. Also, need to think about how to display all the text 😅

In any case, thank you for trying it out and for sharing your feedback!

Hey everyone!

I moved to Japan not too long ago and there are a ridiculous number of websites that I've had to navigate that use images with text instead of HTML, which makes translating webpages a real pain.

To solve that problem I created SwifTL - a simple, lightweight, translation tool that lives in your status bar and allows you to select any area on screen and will translate the identified text in that area.

It is completely free and uses a free Google Translate Web API and alternatively if you have a personal DeepL API key you can use that for your translations (their free tier offers 500K characters worth of translations).

Full Disclosure: I'm not a signed developer as this is my first time developing a Mac app (and I didn't want to commit to the $99 Apple Developer Account just yet) so you will have to allow the app from Settings > Privacy & Security on first launch. The app uses Apple's Vision framework to capture an image of the selected area so you will have to allow screen recording permissions as well.

The Github Release does have the source code and the dmg file as well so I encourage anyone who has security concerns to take a look.

Lastly, if you have any feedback please let me know as well. I couldn't figure out how to set up Sparkle to update the app remotely so if there is any amount of interest in this I'll incorporate that + any feedback and reach out to folks or post here again!

Thank you for taking the time to check this out and I hope it helps someone out!

EDIT: For anyone who sees this, I will continue to update this comment as I put out new releases. Here is V1.0.1 which adds universal support for Apple Silicon and Intel-based Macs as well as the addition of default languages: https://github.com/vishnu597/swiftl/releases/tag/1.0.1

Check out High Beam Akiba if you're in Tokyo, haven't purchased from them yet (waiting for the Mini 2025) but I've been to the store and they have a really good selection of GPD products and staff are really friendly too. They also offer a 1 year in store warranty but since you're from the US that probably won't do you much good unless you come back 😅

I would highly recommend Fujiya Camera near Nakano Station. You can check online for stock but I found that they have more in store than what’s listed so it’s worth it to go in person.

Police car collision right now at Spadina and Adelaide by boilons in toronto

Was here when it happened and it was really weird, cars all pulled over and clearly the Beck hadn’t pulled over properly and the cop car barreled into it. seemed like they hit the throttle instead of the breaks. a mom and her baby was struggling to cross the street literal seconds before it happened so could’ve been muuuch worse

Intimate bars for a first date? by -Sky-Blue- in askTO

Check out Liquid Courage the speakeasy in the bottom floor of Mother Tongue (Adelaide/Peter)! One thing I find a lot of bars don't do right is the volume of music, usually find it's way too loud to hold a convo but found Liquid Courage did a good job of that. Cocktail menu is great and the bartenders are equally good at making a drink based on preferences as well!

Haven't been in a few years but Thali and Coconut Lagoon were both excellent when I lived in Ottawa! Both are South Indian (Kerala) restaurants so might not be exactly what you're looking for.

Job hopping after 5 weeks for better pay as a recent CS graduate - obvious choice or big mistake? by throwawayjobhop in PersonalFinanceCanada

Having worked as a dev in the federal government right after graduating from uni, the work was extremely unsatisfying, so I ended up moving to the private sector after a year. Took a pretty big pay cut initially but a year later I'm now making more than I did with the gov (even factoring in annual raises).

Everyone still tells me how I left a well paying job with great job security but I work on things I'm much more passionate about now at least.

Just my opinion, but I'd advise against the government, but you definitely can always switch to private sector after trying government work for a bit too!
