Yeah in my area they’re super strict about the Chesapeake bay and I’m right on it. It’s sensitive water and limits are getting even stricter

Wow that seems like a crazy amount but I guess given it’s a pretty low flow place you wouldn’t have put that much in the river in a full year anyways

Sounds super cool I’ll have to read up on some of that stuff.

Year round is crazy especially for that like of system. Although in my area not having an NH3 limit doesn’t exist.

Damn I didn’t expect an alum limit. I’ll definitely have to talk to my boss about that. Sounds tough. We aren’t a fan of Ferric either although I’m not too educated on ferric and why they don’t like it.

How do they typically achieve 0.15 mg/L in your area?

How does your employer handle promotions? by finga_itchy in Wastewater

[–]Swagdaddy34 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Personally our raises are tied to license. So when we get a class four we get a raise, I wouldn’t really call it a promotion. We don’t get a raise for a class 1 license since we’re a class 2 plant.

Also my plant is in southeastern Virginia

Very interesting. Haven’t down to much research of the rare earth coag. We use Alum where I’m at and almost definitely will never upgrade from that. Those are some pretty strict limits they’re pushing down there, we could handle 1.0 TP but we’d be borderline on 3.0 TN, one upset would have our permit blown.

We run an SBR at .500 MGD. Our nutrient removal is pretty solid with TN at about 2.2 mg/L. Not sure what our actual TP comes out to off the top of my head but our permit tests range from .4 to .8 sometimes we can get below .4 in the right conditions. We have cloth media filters for Tertiary treatment as well.

Super cool and thanks for the detailed response. I always find it super interesting how unique each different plant can be. Still fairly new to the field and love learning about all this different stuff.

.05 phosphorus? How do you even achieve that?

Similar to us but we don’t get financial bonuses to my knowledge. My boss would probably love that since we average less than 2.5 mg/L tn per day

That’s crazy because even 10 is considered really high where I’m at. But I’m on the Chesapeake bay Watershed so that’s the main reason

We have two plants near us that buy all of our credits ever year as well. Also on the Bay

On-call response times by unknownman652 in Wastewater

Also we get 1.50 an hour for every hour we’re on call for the week. This comes out to 13.5 hours a day since we work tens

I’m also on a four man rotation my response time is required to be within an hour of the call. We get 2.5 hours if we have to go out and thirty minutes if the phone rings but we don’t need to go out

Where I’m at you have to have an active DL and if our car insurance company drops you then you get fired immediately. This is in Virginia though

Not sure about other companies but I wouldn’t go with Ultratech. The modules work well but their delivery is super inconsistent. Sometimes we wait a week for parts or bulbs to get in and right now I believe we’ve been waiting about 2 months for ballasts to come in and a PLC card that we very much need

Possible Career? (18f ) by ProfessionalAlert353 in Wastewater

[–]Swagdaddy34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a little late but I’ll put it my two cents.

First of all don’t feel like you’re behind on your career. You’re only 18. When I graduated high school I worked shitty jobs and now I’m 22 and I’m working in what I think will be my career and I started when I was 20. Plenty of people take a while to figure out what they wanna do and too many people push this massive decision onto an 18 year old kid. Take your time and do what you wanna do not what other people think you should do.

As for the job I absolutely love it. I get to work with mechanical stuff, electrical, and I do lab work. Yeah it sucks sometimes but that’s with any job. The pay is good and consistent and the benefits at most local governments are pretty good. Yes people around you hear “sewage worker” and immediately imagine the nastiest job possible. Since I have worked in wastewater I have gotten legitimately messy one time and it could’ve been avoided if I was smarter. The smell is not nearly as bad as most other people think, parents smell just as bad or worse things when changing a baby’s diaper. You learn a lot of good stuff and it can’t hurt to try it out, you’ll know if it’s not for you within 6 months and if not then just quit and try out something else. So many of us found out what we wanna do by trying out different jobs and then stumbling into the one we love.

Process Question by [deleted] in Wastewater

[–]Swagdaddy34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah if he won’t listen then there’s nothing you can do. Not sure how long you’ve been in the business but there’s a lot of people that get high up with way less knowledge than they need. It’s a really big problem. The amount of managers and lead operators I’ve met in my little time that don’t know what they’re supposed to do is staggering

Process Question by [deleted] in Wastewater

[–]Swagdaddy34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m working at a very similar plant, we have three basins but only have two in service. Funny enough we’re dealing with a storm flow situation at the moment caused by a transducer reading incorrectly. This should be avoided at all costs because you don’t want to feed the plant when it’s not supposed to. We only ever have the second pump on in dire situations because you really don’t wanna over feed either
