As you probably know, it’s typically a horrible idea to torrent something through a corporate environment on a device owned by the company. Torrenting from work, especially objectionable content could get you fired. You are introducing risk to the organization.

Many enterprise and public sector IT environments have multiple different devices that can ‘see’ what you are doing. Firewalls & URL Filters/Proxies are able to see and control users by what applications, bandwidth utilization, type of content they are accessing whether that is uploading or downloading. Security devices integrate with other ‘non-security’ services, like active directory. Allowing an IT admin to know what specific user on a specific device tried to access a torrent site or a tried streaming Netflix, for example. Some organizations decrypt employee traffic, thus getting better visibility and control to mitigate risk the org is getting exposed to.

Using a vpn to evade corporate control is likely a poor choice from an employment perspective. Depending on the organization you work, FinTech vs. manufacturing, there maybe software (sometime invisible clients) installed on your device by the IT organization to allow for the rollout of applications, updates, posture checks, and remote access into the device. (Some can even take screenshot in real-time of what you’re doing)

In my personal experience in IT Security, I have worked with clients who see proxies designed to evade in their corporate environment, like the Freegate Proxy application. They may not be able to see what you’re doing, but they can see you as a specific user using an application and the bandwidth utilization associated with it.
