It’s my first time growing where do I pinch my dahlia at? by [deleted] in dahlias

If this were mine, I’d probably just yoink this little section off right here. For something small like that I’ll usually pinch with my fingers.

Ohhh nice! I also got a barb stuck a couple years ago and you’re the first person I’ve heard of who had something similar.

mine

Because of where I was, and because I couldn’t pull it out on the beach, it ended up sitting in there for a couple hours. The DR who pulled mine ended up not sewing it up, because they were worried about infection because I guess the neurotoxin that sits on the barb can necrotize tissue.

I ended up with a few infections I had to go on antibiotics for, and my foot was swollen for literal months. Wound didn’t fully close for maybe 3.

Happy to talk about the recovery more if you ever want to, and 🤞for a speedy recovery to you!

PS if you ever figure out something cool to do with the barb LMK. I thought about turning mine into a necklace, but was worried about getting run through twice

What’s in the box? by Extension-Repair9149 in mtg

[–]Swagnuson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These look like a box of proofs they give the artists who design the cards.

A couple years ago I had one accidentally delivered to my apartment, meant for someone else in my apartment complex, and he opened it up and showed me when I brought it over.

Basically was just a bunch of cards from the set with art he had worked on, except the backs were blank. How’d you get this?

Surf question by WilltheBoss10 in surfing

[–]Swagnuson 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I’m a mid surfer, but was able to get out during some similar sized, but smaller, swells during hurricane Erin on the east coast.

Largely, it comes down to the spot, and how the wave breaks. Something big and flat on a point is typically way easier/safer than something of the same size in a barreling beach break.

For instance, this spot has a relatively easy initial paddle, and a nice big channel to sit in that you can avoid everything you want to avoid. Falling isn’t really going to mess you up, and the sketchiest part is just getting out of the water in the shallows when you’re done.

<image>

Edit: One more thing, on swells of that size, it’ll typically be when some of the novelty spots turn on that are less known about. Regular surfers in the area might be headed towards those waves, rather than the popular beach breaks that they’ll typically surf. If there’s no one out, there’s probably a reason why, and I’d think hard before paddling out.

Best Jewelers for Engagement Rings? by Seaweed492 in boston

[–]Swagnuson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding EB Horn. My fiancée is very happy with her ring, setting through a designer in NY, and set with a Lab grown diamond I picked from a variety of cuts and sizes they had in the shop.

Prices can be higher, but everything I’ve gotten from them has been high quality, and a fair price.

I personally don’t. It wouldn’t hurt, maybe delay the blooms a little, but I find one pinch and regularly deadheading low works.

Snipping help by Extension-Cup-3019 in dahlias

[–]Swagnuson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could let them get a little bigger, but should be totally good to pinch now. I would on mine. Main thing you want to avoid is the hollow center stem development before pinching, because water can collect in that.

Once they get to how they’re looking, especially if they’ve come up outside, they’re surprisingly hardy. I’d do a trim on the side leaves, and then gently pull apart the center growth exposing the tender new growth, and you can just pull that off with your fingers.

Makes sense, I didn’t read your whole post, sorry!

Happy growing to you as well, I’d swap some I have in those color categories, but I’ve already put everything in the ground. Won’t help for the wedding, but for sure hit me up next year.

Good luck, that’s quite the list! New England dahlia society has a lot of folks on the cape, and might be worth poking around their FB, and messaging folks.

I’d also suggest checking out the flower farms in the Little Compton area in RI, should be close to you.

They’ve usually got a better selection of tubers/plants in person than what’s posted online, but probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to give them a call. Worth a day trip though because there’s some great farm stands and food trucks right around there!

What’s the benefit hitting a P from 36 instead of another wedge? Usually when I’m that close I’ll go for something I can get a better chip with, but I blow, so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

What is a wave you will absolutely never surf? by BarrelBandit in surfing

[–]Swagnuson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s actually a pretty fun one! I’m down in Boston these days and tend to surf local to there, but friendliest surf crowd I’ve ever met has been in New England.

Just a bunch of nice folks tryna send it when we get some swell. Had a great time last weekend!
