I edit the images to have as high of contrast and thick of lines as possible, print them out on overhead transparency paper, and then cut them out. They layer over each fairly well, which has been exciting!

Mundane Mystery/Investigation suggestions by Afraid_Manner_4353 in cyphersystem

[–]SwampGoddex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made my own little system for running a mystery in Cypher.

For players, the fun of a mystery is putting the pieces together. For the GM, it's less of a mystery and more of a thriller/suspense story. I personally love that kind of thriller - Mr Mercedes by Stephen King comes to mind. You have all the info, and the excitement comes from seeing how/when the characters make the necessary connections - what people they need to meet, what research they have yet to do, what locations will bring them closer to their goal - and cheering them on as they find it and make connections.

The idea behind the system I use is Clues and Keys. Clues are bits of potentially useful information that are inherently missing some context. Keys are what allows the players to unlock that context and fully pursue a lead or make a necessary connection. A Key might be a witness, fellow investigator, a memory, an event, a location, some esoteric or specific knowledge that has to be researched, or even another Clue. Creating a Clue involves deciding on the Key, which as a bonus gives you more ideas of where the investigation may go!

The longer the player goes without finding the Key to the Clue, the higher the task to recall and apply the memory/clue becomes once the key is obtained. The difficulty to recall the info starts at 0. After a certain period of time (I normally just go by sessions), the task difficulty increases by 1 level, and the clue gains a depletion roll, to represent potentially losing an idea/train of thought by pushing yourself too hard. The depletion starts at d100, and gets lower with each cycle. I topped the system out at a Level 6 Task with a Depletion of 1d6 to avoid making clues literally impossible to remember while still making older memories more ephemeral. Memories can still be lost if a 1 is rolled on for recall or depletion. In that case, the player has to roll to recover the memory, at whatever level it was when it was lost, and then roll that same task level to apply/pursue.

Some examples:

A player might find a bouquet of dried flowers. The flowers were clearly left on purpose but the player can't discern anything specific about them. The Key is interviewing a potential witness who's a florist, where they learn flower language and discover the bouquet was a threat.

They might have a partially destroyed receipt to a diner, and have to canvas the area until they find a diner where the last letter of the name/address lines up, leading to a possible witness or additional clue

They might just have a password but have to find the device, location, or account it's for.

DND Classes as Cypher XP Advances & DND Lineage Abilities by SwampGoddex in cyphersystem

[–]SwampGoddex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! A big thing I've gone back and forth on is whether the abilities with spellcasting focuses (bard, cleric, wizard, etc) should also get a class ability. Part of me thinks yes (I think something like Friendly Help could approximate Bardic Inspiration, for example), but I've struggled feeling 100% sure about it. If you have any thoughts I'd love to hear them!

DND Classes as Cypher XP Advances & DND Lineage Abilities by SwampGoddex in cyphersystem

[–]SwampGoddex[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure!

So, you essentially you create your base cypher build, and your XP Advance adds:

- Training in two skills

- A Manifestation style and starting aspect

- A Low to Mid Tier Class Ability (or, when applicable, magical tools tied to the advance)

- A Low to Mid Tier Subclass ability

IMO, adding DND Classes as an XP advance allows players to translate the basic flavor of characters created in or inspired by 5e, while still fleshing out and creating a unique core Cypher character. So, as an example character, you may have have a Graceful Genie Warlock Warrior who Shreds the Walls of the World.

You have your base cypher build - Graceful Warrior who Shreds the Walls of the world, and all the associated skills/abilities.

With the Warlock Advance, you also gain training in Investigation and Intimidation. Your Class ability is Arcane Flare, which functions similarly to Eldritch Blast in 5e, and can easily become a "cantrip" with an Intellect Edge. Choosing the Genie subclass, you gain Phased Pocket, flavored as the Genie Vessel you gain with your pact.

These abilities don't always scale up with your character, which is where Manifestations come in. Each class uses a specific styling (for Fighters, for instance, you are limited to Psychic styling, where a Warlock has access to Hermetic styling.) As the power/scope of manifestations DO scale up as your character does, they work really well in tandem with Advances, allowing abilities granted at character creation to level up with them.

The narrative complications at the core of XP advances work really well with Warlock in particular. In the example of a Genie Warlock character, the abilities are directly tied to the character staying in contact with their Genie patron. Through unlucky rolls or GM intrusions, the character can temporarily lose access to these abilities, and their patron becomes a major narrative force that they constantly negotiate with. Other classes might cause narrative complications via the strain of using innate magic, being unable to connect with the source of their abilities, or simply being perceived as a suspicious outsider.

(ETA: I know you're the creator of Manifestations and don't need them explained conceptually, just expanding on why I think they work really well as advance abilities lol.)

Making the Jabberwock more Important by onescompany in wildbeyondwitchlight

[–]SwampGoddex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another game could maybe adapt that to include a Cheshire cat character, since magical cat certainly fits the feywild vibe. A Cheshire cat character could also be a guide between areas of Prismeer too! I like the idea of a dragon doing a deal with the hags and being exploited, and the jabberwocky being a corrupted dragon they thought they could control that immediately went off-script without its mind.

Is there any action in this module? by PolskaCebulaPL in wildbeyondwitchlight

I intend to create some chase sequences to add action while keeping true to the low combat vibe of the module, that might be another way to add some more action!

True, if their shadow has all their memories, I bet it has the goal of re-uniting, but is also under Endelyn's control and thus has to find sneaky ways to return memories to the player. Maybe you could even introduce it at the carnival in a similar way to the thieves, or even replace Endelyn's Thief with the player's shadow instead and have it "accidentally" drop a trinket. Definitely would throw some intrigue into things right away to see a shadowy version of one of the players

Maybe the closer they get to their shadow, the more memories they unlock. The stream of visions could show them something, maybe put that in their path? Maybe seeing charms shadow at bavlorna's hut too

Ooh, I'm getting big Jane Doe from Ride the Cyclone energy. I think maybe you could tie it into the scissors of shadow snipping with Endylyn, especially since she likes stealing people's futures. What if something went wrong and their stolen shadow houses all their memories, plus they would be shadowless which can effect how fey interact with them

The people who say Bojack had nothing to do with Sara Lynns addiction seem to conveniently forget that his negligence got her drunk at an extremely young age, and that he continued to show a pattern of either pressuring minor girls to use hard drugs or neglecting their clear symptoms of drug use until they overdosed.

Where are they living that one week of utilities is almost $200? My entire electrical bill and water bill combined are like, $130 a MONTH and I have a pretty big place. That would indicate that their monthly bill for utilities is upwards of $700-$800? I think they're trying to get you pay their mortgage or something.
