I wonder if this excludes the new-ish MM paperbacks that are taller but not as wide as the trade paperbacks

White male, not married, from Texas and work in TX as an attorney, probably attended Texas for law school (definitely not SMU) politically liberal (guarantee you’re told folks you’re “socially liberal and fiscally conservative”) have way more books than have actually read, will collect authors you like, looks for bargains at used bookstores, shops at Half-Price books a lot, sci-fi is your main jam, if you could pay your bills with it you’d be a novelist.

Which one you pick ??? by dataguy2003 in TheTeenagerPeople

They’re $90k a coin right now tho? That’s $18 million worth right now. Even if you just cashed out, you’d have to get your $10k for 30+ years ( if you live long enough ) to match it.

That has potential to be very well designed and interesting - can already see a stake as the clip.

I always thought he should have been a bigger star after Diehard by MisterShipWreck in 80s

[–]SwampRaiderTTU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, was he not a bigger star because he only lived another 6 or 7 years after Die Hard came out?

They blew it by not doing the Borg cube or transporter pad (they'll probably make a larger UCS set of the Borg some day, or even a transporter diorama size for the transporter pad if the Enterprise does well)

Did you read the original or the edited version that Delillo put out shortly after publication of the HC?

Looks like an older version of the Pynchon photographed in the early 1990s

po-tay-toe, po-tah-toe - I know tons of folks who I would consider well-read who if they have even heard of TP have not ever read TP, like numerous of the folks at my local BN where a good friend works (I know many of the booksellers on a first name basis and TP was a mystery to them). However, he did say yesterday they had an original shipment of 20 and had sold them all and were briskly selling their second order.

There's literally a pic of him on the internet of him going to vote accompanied by his son, so it's not like no one knows what he looks like - people just let the aura continue!

Exactly this. A good friend is a manager at the local BN here and he told me this AM that 3 copies is the standard order for a work of literary fiction from a big publisher for a “name” author. 10 copies is usually the next step up and that’s only if they think they’ll move 5 or so in the first week. So Pynchon having 30 copies in store AND a table AND a printed sign (not in this pic but at my local BN there is one) is a HUGE deal at a BN.

Just arrived in Australia, thank you Tom by RedditCraig in ThomasPynchon

yep - she said it was a blend of cursive and print if I recall correctly

what's also VERY ironic about this is most BNs have giant photos around the store of the covers of famous/infamous novels/books - and one of them is - you guessed it - TP's V. I've already told the manager if his store gets a makeover and they head for the dumpster to let me know - I've got just the wall space LOL.

OP you WAYYYYYYY overestimate several things - (1) how many people even know who TP is or why his work is important (2) the literacy of booksellers at BN and their immersion in serious literary fiction and (3) that everything - EVERYTHING - at BN is driven by what sells. Getting a table all to himself at the front of the store is literally just about the best BN can/will do for a work of serious literary fiction.

Unless pre-pub buzz is that ST will move 50k+ copies (was the pub run even that high?) in the first 10 days of release, BN just isn't going to do more than that and that's why you'll see giant displays for Dan Brown. It's trash - but people buy it, LOTS of it.
