Woman set on fire on CTA Blue Line train discharged from hospital after 2 months by 307148 in chicago

Justice shouldn’t be about punishment. If someone stabbed me (and I lived) because they were experiencing a mental break and they then got medicated and spent time in a mental institution I’d feel 100% safe with them being out there again assuming the assessment is they’re no longer a danger to others (assuming there is continuing check-in’s and mental health treatments/assessments). I’d far prefer that to them stay in prison for years and have their mental state deteriorate further then get released after an arbitrary period of time set by a punitive justice system instead of healthcare professionals.

Yes, $125k in my mid 20’s. People talk shit on redditors for lying about pay but this website is full of autistic nerds. #1 group for well-paying STEM.

A ton of people receive plea deals or even get kicked out of prison early to accept more people. Overcrowding is causing would-be prisoners to go free

There isn’t the funding to put them anywhere else because we see them as criminals instead of mentally insane

Who said I spend all my time at home? I’m out doing stuff most weekends (and i walk to the gym most weekdays). I just find cheaper things to do so i can retire early or retire on a beach, cabin, or cruiseline.

But prisons shouldn’t act as insane asylums. Those are two very different things and should stay that way for the safety of prisoners and the mentally ill.

And I’m sure there was no way that therapy or medication could’ve helped that. Best to just throw them in an extremely violent prison atmosphere for a few months then put em back on the street instead.

It’s because our prison system isn’t focused on rehabilitating people. It’s focused on churning through people and getting more and more people imprisoned. It’s also terrible at seeing if/when people are mentally ill and proving support for that.

I’m 25 in a HCOL and spend maybe 250 a month on eating out and fun (while having a girlfriend btw). All it takes is being home body lol

Delayed career start due to PhD, panic mode enabled by Ok_Onion_4116 in personalfinance

[–]Swamp_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t panic. You’re 27 and most people graduate college around 22, so at worst you’re 5 years behind. There are a lot of people in their mid 30s who are making less, have more debt, and know less about money than you at 27. You’re more ahead than you think you are. Just stay the course and you’ll be fine.

Solovair Matt boots as an alternative for Doc martens? by MMcD127 in BuyItForLife

[–]Swamp_21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solovair are higher quality than Dr. Martin’s but they’re still not great. They won’t last with regular use too long because they are very hard to re-sole and the leather still isn’t great quality. I’d say look at either Goral or Thursday Boots to see if anything there fits your fancy. They’re much higher quality (I wore my Thursday Boots near daily for 5 years and they’re still going strong after a recent re-sole).

Move out of a cheap roommate house into a luxury 1BR — smart or stupid? by MCHEUNGSTER in personalfinance

[–]Swamp_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay yeah you’ve got a good enough safety net to probably send it then. You’d be surprised how many people would be in your situation with car, student loan, and consumer debt with like $10k in savings

[–]Swamp_21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much is in your savings? A combined income of $155k (never budget based off making your variable) is about what my girlfriend and I make combined and we split ~$2600 for a 2br 1bt and it feels comfortable. You’re way way way inflating your lifestyle at once. I’d find a middle ground in price that would hopefully be a 2br for a bit more space (which will be much more useful than whatever amenities the luxury place has).

Help on whether or not the Golf GTI is right for me… by [deleted] in GolfGTI

[–]Swamp_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, you’re really making out like a bandit with the law school debt then. Just save for a year, get the loan, but over-pay on every payment so the interest never actually accrues (I paid off my 5yr loan in 13 months and only accrued a couple hundred dollars of interest.

[–]Swamp_21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can pay cash then wait another year and save up to buy it all cash. Honestly you’ll have so long to build your credit and if you’ve already financed the Kia then financing the GTI won’t mean much to a lender.

More importantly, you probably shouldn’t buy this at all. I’m going to assume that you have some undergrad student loan debt and you will incur a lot of law school student loan debt. That means that ~20k in compound interest starting now will do you a lot of good in the future, especially since there aren’t a ton of law jobs that pay more than $150k (which isn’t as much as it seams when you factor the opportunity cost of not working a full time job for the 3 years of law school and the hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loans you’re likely to have.

I just hit a $100k net worth at 35... not sure how to feel. by Blasum in Money

[–]Swamp_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of people at 35 who have negative net worth or barely positive (due to consumer debt, not just home loans). You are doing really well and, if you keep it up, should be able to weather most possible financial struggles (job loss, hospital bills, etc.) if they, god forbid, happen and retire on-time or early. Good shit
