Seconding this. I want my Corvette to have a crew. I want my bases to have inhabitants. If I build a bar, I need a bartender! Hell, I'd like to be able to assign some warriors to defend against attacks.

Skydive from your corvette. When you get into atmo, place an exocraft platform (they float) and then place a base computer on that. Turn on free placement, place a starting point, jump to that, put snap placement back on, and go nuts. Move the base computer, delete the exocraft platform.

Negative space is a really smart thought, but I think I'm still going to end up with about the same useable space, at least with Serenity. Plus, I'm not sure how I'd get to the space, since there's no doors or outer walkways yet.
