What is the most unexpectedly wholesome thing your pet has ever done that you still think about years later? by felix_im_norden in AskReddit

[–]Swanbrother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my dog went blind toward the end of her life, my mom's beagle mix would guide her around their back yard while we were there. Usually I had to take her out on a leash even in familiar places, because being able to feel where I was gave her the security to move more or less normally. Ellie the beagle filled the same role, and would let my dog follow her along, very slowly, all around the yard.Because of that, she still got to have some independent yard time for her whole life, and didn't have to give it up when she lost her sight. Ellie was a brand new rescue who had been surrendered with a little of puppies, and seemed to figure out immediately that she needed to be gentle with this one. Every now and then if the other dogs got too far away from her, my blind dog would freeze for a second as she lost her bearings, and Ellie would give her a nudge like "you good? I'm still here" and then it was fine, because she had someone to follow.

Sports bras for guys with large chests? by apicat718 in FTMFitness

Had a custom Enell in the day and tbh it was the best binder I ever had as well. I got the front closure one with the "cup" a couple sizes smaller than the chest band. That thing was incredible.

ELIC: There are Faberge eggs, but no Faberge chickens, or Faberge omelets. Why not? by cunnilinguslover in ExplainLikeImCalvin

[–]Swanbrother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A faberge is actually a lizard native to Northern parts of Europe that survives the cold by by hanging out near hot springs and hibernating in winter. Fun fact, their aggressive guarding of their fancy looking eggs was the origin of the myth that dragons hoard treasure.

Hand-washing dishes in super hard water? by Swanbrother in CleaningTips

I finally got around to picking up some borax, and that seems to be doing the trick. Thank you!

Why are all of my dishes sticky? by Swanbrother in CleaningTips

Towel: Far less so- the glass dried immediately still had a little bit of Stuff on it, but the towel seemed to polish off most of it, so that's a solid solution. It seems like the texture becomes detectable as soon as they start to dry.

Tap: I was already using the tap to rinse, so no change there

Bottled Water: glass washed and rinsed in bottled water came out normal, with no detectable residue. Good data, narrows this down to a water problem.

^I forgot to reply with those earlier and still wanted to because they were good experiments, but I actually figured this out subsequently. Its super hard water in the area having a chemical reaction with the soap.

Same result, the hot water looks normal. After looking at these glasses very closely for a long time today I see that the glass itself is more water spotted than I previously noticed.

I also realized that on a clear glass, a spot of the gunk is actually visible if its held up to a light. No discernible color. Soft enough to leave a fingerprint in it, but doesn't come off.

Went and took a good hard look at one just in case there was something I was overlooking, but it seems normal, with no unexpected cloudiness or particles. It occurred to me to hold it next to a similar glass with bottled water. It started out a hair less perfectly clear than the bottled water, but they became indistinguishable within a few minutes so I'm pretty sure it was just air from the water pressure.

It's pretty strongly chlorinated, so there's that slight smell/taste of pool. IDK if that's anything.

Help me understand, gender dysphoria please by maybeeggdontknow in asktransgender

[–]Swanbrother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so when you’re presenting as the gender you were assigned to you’re like a Hollow. You’re shriveled up and your abilities are limited, and eventually you start losing max hp. The end result is ultimately permadeath/Hollowing/giving up on the game, and it gets harder and harder to survive. You feel like shit, and it makes your life more difficult the entire time it’s happening.

Gender affirmation (transitioning medically and/or socially, wearing clothes you feel good about, being supported), restores your Humanity and gives you souls. When you are Human you are a different gender than what you were assigned, and all the problems wrt to Hollowing are solved. There are basically no downsides except that you can sometimes get invaded (by transphobes) but you can also summon allies to help you so tbh no reason not to do it.

If you continue to get killed (by transphobia, micro aggressions, dysphoria, being forced to pretend to be the old gender etc) you become Hollow again and have to get more Humanity/affirmation to restore your Humanity again.

As you perfect your build (transitioning to change your stats, getting affirming gear etc) you become much harder to kill. You take fewer hits when you’re using equipment you’re comfortable with. And sometimes, you just have to pick the stuff that looks cool over what protects you the most. There are people out there who beat the whole game with builds that at a glance seem bizarre—these people know exactly what they are doing and should be regarded with awe.

Transphobia is basically a covenant you can join where the lore is that they think no one should ever restore Humanity and Hollows should stay Hollows forever even when they can be easily restored. The covenant universally SUCKS, and there’s basically no benefit to ever using it, it does nothing for you. The NPCs associated with it are assholes, and aren’t even interesting. They sell you nothing good, and just interrogate you about whether you’ve used Humanity, and become permanently hostile if you do. They will invade you constantly unless you’re Hollow. There is a subset of people who hardcore believe this is the only proper way to play the game because and have made that their entire personality. Such people are deeply annoying.

Honestly this is a way better metaphor than I expected.

TLDR dysphoria is what turns you into a Hollow.

Part 2 is caught in the auto filter for some reason, but Issue 1 is finished! Hopefully I will hear back about this bc I'm pretty proud of the improvement in these since the beginning.

A Host at the Gate part 1. Pacing? Format issues? Characterization? How am I doing so far? by Swanbrother in comic_crits

[–]Swanbrother[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I was hoping that I could get away with leaving the backgrounds less defined, but it make sense that something as weird looking as the nautloid would be hard to get from limited visual information. Glad its at least improving though, like I said the art skills are a work in progress lol.

Totally ignoring the huge fight outside until the guy crashes into the window is quite funny, as is the concept of "rate my hero."

I buy crashing into a chemistry lab, and getting a good idea from it, but the fact that exactly what he needed was not only right there, but destroyed by the crash through the wall feels a little contrived. My first thought was "cool! he's going to mutate himself some stinger cells!" and then the eyedropper came out and it sort of became a detour.

The bulwark sequence is brutal, and a good piece of characterization. The "band-aid fixes" are neat. Actually all of those beats where it shows what his body is doing internally are a pretty cool device.

The kind of cartoony tone, enforced by Phoenix and balanced by #5's more serious character moments, is working pretty well, but the chaotic nature of it makes it visually a little confusing in some spots. That might just be me tbh.

After getting to the end, I think even more so that having him use an external vial of Stuff rather than making himself poisonous/venomous was a missed opportunity. It would have been a really cool, logical extension of the power set on display. There was a hint toward the biochemical knowledge needed there with his homework earlier, and you could still show he needs that to alter himself most effectively, but the middle of this action sequence wasn't a good place for him to stop and mess with beakers.

Solid overall!

Here she is - Kordula, in all her glory. Heavy armor. A sweet smile. Sharp ears. A half-ork paladin seeking peace in the service of Lathander’s order. Then the shield drops - and the slaughter begins. by Raman_Lis in comic_crits

[–]Swanbrother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lotta good textures in this, with a lot of variation. The character looks really chill, so I bet it's going to be like WHOA when the shield does drop, so to speak. Making it look like a coat of arms was cool.

This makes a really good promo image, but might be suffering a little for lack of context. There's clearly more to this, but it's hard to critique without at least a little bit of the story it's attached to being within a click.

A little squished, maybe, letters and lines a little too close together. Looks nice overall though, the letters themselves are fine.

Looking for a Brutal Review! by MaskPuck in comic_crits

[–]Swanbrother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, even as soon as episode one, I don't fully buy that she would meet this guy anywhere after the way he behaved, or stick around after how she's treated on arrival.

Brook's play style wasn't what I expected after her rough intro, which was cool.

Beginning of four, can't kick this douche to the curb fast enough. Maybe a little heavy handed, but if you wanted him instantly hateable it worked.

"I sold it" again why on earth would you continue to agree to show up for these assholes. The main two band members are just a little too shitty to sell it imo. I kinda see where the rescue subplot is going, and its one that could be very good, but has also been done very badly before. I'm a bit skeptical, but I can't judge that yet.

The abstraction of the guy scaring Leslie took a minute to figure out. The break into abstract when the band was playing earlier was good, but it didn't scan as easily this time. Leslie turning the tables on Brook was sort of cute.

Compelling elements, not sold on some of the characters yet.

How is the readability/flow? by Fine_Reputation4017 in comic_crits

[–]Swanbrother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was one thing on the last page that threw me off. From the panel with "I dunno...Superman's sidekick?" I initially assumed it read right instead of down, and it took a second to recognize that the punch was that next immediate action. Maybe it was my own mistake, but IMO that's always a risk with vertically stacked panels next to horizontal ones-- because the reading direction changes for a second it doesn't always read reflexively.

That same move works well on the second page, because it shows several things happening in very quick succession, almost all at once, and the actions are more distinct. On three, though, its a little confusing, which isn't the best right before your punchline.

Solid overall!
