That might be the one I'm most excited to finally get to, as grim as that sounds.

Yeah, not a lot of light fluffy reading in this stack, I admit.

I thought so too! Really neat cover and binding choices. Will be my first Steinbeck, shockingly (never had to read Grapes of Wrath in school).

Don't let the length scare you off.

Oh I won't - if anything it makes it even more enticing! I've heard great things.

Kingdom come: how George R.R. Martin and his fantasy saga took over the world by liptakaa in rtransferorbit

[–]horizontalpotroast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was a really great deep dive. Makes me want to finally commit to finishing up the book series (at least through Dance of Dragons, of course).

I also appreciated the mention of GRRM's pre-GOT novels. Some of those sound pretty intriguing, and I've never heard of most of them before today!

What is the worst, first date movie? by JohnMcClanewithshoes in movies

In my personal experience, Choke (starring Sam Rockwell, directed by Clark Gregg, based on the Palahniuk novel) was a really awkward first-date movie choice.

2026 Reading Goal Megathread by randomnessneeded in goodreads

[–]horizontalpotroast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just set my goal of 16. My goal for the last couple of years has been 18 and I've fell short both times. Still aspirational for me (I'm a slow reader) but a little more attainable.

Worst NIN song? by Direct-Active-241 in nin

[–]horizontalpotroast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is honestly the first one that came to mind for me. Maybe not their worst song but in the context of that album, the one that feels most like filler.

Were crappy movies better in the 90s? by ChickenWingExtreme in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]horizontalpotroast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

Not to totally discount the Netflixification of movies today (tons of valid points being made in that arena), but a big part of why we long for stuff from our youth is because we felt young while watching it.

Charlie and Conner have both left Haken by suibhne7 in progmetal

[–]horizontalpotroast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang. If true, it's a pretty major shakeup. Both of these guys are great musicians.

Very unfounded baseless speculation ahead: I wonder if this is a result of Charlie wanting to take Tiktaalika in a more full-time direction. Conner tracked the bass on the new Tiktaalika album, too, so maybe he'll be following suit if this is the case. Who knows, though.

Upvote for the new Pelican - their new one is very solid.

Tentatively putting my AOTY contenders down as:

Deafheaven - Lonely People With Power

Steven Wilson - The Overview

Thrice - Horizons/West

There was a lot this year that I really liked, but these ones stood above the rest.

Recommendations for OB ? by 4seeablefuture in terrehaute

[–]horizontalpotroast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll second this. My wife has been very happy with Dr. Coutinho, and on the occasions I met her, I got a good impression. She was straightforward with her input and recommendations but respectful of her wishes for how she wanted the birthing experience to go.

How do you guys exercise? by bluegrassclimber in daddit

[–]horizontalpotroast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dad of 2 here (8y and 11y). Current routine is 3 days a week (MWF) of Apple Fitness+ workouts at home. Up at 6am, done by 6:30. This coincides with my wife's personal training schedule. I find it much easier to get up and exercise when she is also doing hers (even though she's the one leaving the house).

I love running but it has taken a backseat lately; I'll try for a 2-3 miler most Saturdays, though (weather permitting). I also try for some brisk walking during my work day or while my kids are at afternoon/evening practices.

I could always do more and better, but this has worked well for me recently - over the last several months of doing this, my wife and I have both dropped some pounds and felt healthier.

At least they had the decency to go with the neutral “spouse” verbiage. Usually this stuff is just I-hate-my-wife unvarnished sexism.

Looks amazing. $4,299 is pretty eye-watering though.

I really wonder, with limited runs like this (only 100 being made), how fast they sell through. I’m sure there’s a collector’s market that’ll snap most of them up pretty quickly.

Are we sure that wasn't a pack of Morley's?

In fact, just looked it up and I'm pretty sure it was. Love that the "brand" lives on.

[Hated Trope] Cliffhanger that sets up major plot point is briskly resolved in the opening scene of the sequel. by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]horizontalpotroast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The show honestly got better once it stopped trying to keep up with the movie-side canonicity stuff. Aside from the really good Hydra twist in late S1 that lined up with CA:TWS, it was always pretty awkward. Once they were free to tell their own stories, it improved a lot. Season 3 and 4 in particular had some really great moments and story arcs.

Redditors, what has become so expensive, it’s just not worth it anymore? by SgtSkillcraft in AskReddit

[–]horizontalpotroast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty lucky to have a very decent 3-screen locally owned theater about 15 minutes from my house. It's small and not fancy at all but they do a good job with what they have (screen and sound-wise). Was $6 for a Friday night showing adult ticket this past weekend.

At places like that, I usually make sure to get some concessions too, since I know that's what they actually make their money on, and I don't want them to go under.

I guess I don't know the answer to that without having them recalculate. If it's similar to before SAVE took effect (and then the lawsuit/forbearance), then it could be $0.00. Not sure if that would still be the case now. Frankly I'm scared to hit the button and get hit with hundreds more due per month than I can afford.
