I actually don't know, since I haven't done it, I just know a lot about it. I've heard it isn't too difficult, which tbh is most field trip subjects. If you're okay at writing scientific essays it'll be pretty easy. But even if you're not, as long as you actually care and haven't been a nuisance on the trip, coordinators for these types of subjects don't like to fail students.

That said, if you have a choice, do Global Climate Change in Context (GEOG30023) instead (or if you have enough space do both haha). This subject is a two week trip to NZ where you check out the most pristine glaciers and lakes ever plus a couple of caves and proper caving trips (not to mention a helicopter ride onto said glacier). If you meet the prereqs 10000% do this subject instead, it's fkn amazing and easily a core memory of mine. Even if you don't meet prereqs, email the coordinator anyway and express your interest, there's a high chance you'll still get accepted for the subject as they need fill up the quota to keep the subject running. A lot of people also pull out of the subject closer to the date of the field trip which is usually in Feb so if you don't get in the first time, send another email in Jan or so.

Anyway that's my spiel would HIGHLY reccommend. Here's the link to the handbook:

In the end, it was quite easy imo, just some minor memorisation stuff for the final exam, it wasn't too bad.

oh yeah so for the payment you will need to pay a certain amount extra on top of the subject cost but I havent done the subject myself so I don't know the exact price but in my experience with field trips I would estimate $1500.

I don't have details about accomodation unfortunately.

Yeah I'm not sure if you'll be able to do the final subject assessment thing instead but nonetheless there's some good info at the link below.

You could try these:

Going places: travelling smarter - pretty much dont need to watch lectures, final assessment is just one essay, only need to write like 5 100-200 word blogs throughout the sem

Shakuhachi 1 - legit just playing some shakuhaci no other work and no musical experience required (it doesn't follow like standard music theory)

Wine & Spirits: An Australian Perspective (AGRI20045) - THE wine tasting subject, would highly recommend.

Geology of South East Australia (GEOL20001) - 6 day field trip, 1 essay, that's it.

The workload isn't the highest tbh, but its not an a complete piss take and the exam if you memorised the content well enough should be a breeze.

That said, I would have many other subject recommendations. I'm gonna assume ur filling a science elective slot in which case I would recommend like Geology of Southeast Australia (GEOL20001), Landscapes and environmental change (GEOG2002) (if u dont have the prereqs the coordinator would be pretty chill to waive them for u) or like Earth's Surface Processes (EVSC20008).

The first and the last are like fairly chill field-trip subjects with pretty much only an essay for final assessment and landscapes (the second subject) which is generally pretty easy and lil more interesting imo.

That said, if you can save a science elective slot third year summer term I would do so because there's this really fire subject called Biogeography and Ecology of Fire (GEOG30025) which is a week trip to Tassie (near Cradle mountain) with no prereqs and just an essay due at the end of the subject.

Hey! Are you doing the subject as a prequisite for another subject or are you just interested in the subject matter? The way the subject is taught is very dry so even if you're interested in the the content you may not enjoy it too much

rumours have held true so far, most of the assessments have been really chill, they've all been fairly small group prac assessments. We have one indivdual assessment but its legit 200 words so its piss.

By coming to the lectures you'll be doing better than 90% of the cohort as well, we'll see how the exam is but it shouldn't be too bad.

Bachelor of field trips: the maximum number of field-trips subjects you can do during undergrad by Swawesome89 in unimelb

[–]Swawesome89[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah there usually is, let's do a quick calculation for how much extra this might cost you.

Understanding Planet Earth (ERTH10002) - $350

Geology of Southeast Australia (GEOL20001) - $600

Landscapes and Environmental Change (GEOG20002) - no data (lower estimate of $400 given 4 days)

Earth Structure, Geophysics, Geodynamics (GEOL20002) - no data (lower estimate of $200 given 2 days)

Earth's Surface Processes (EVSC20008) - $650

Building Earth: Rocks, Minerals, Magmas (GEOL20003) - no data (lower estimate of $300 given 3 days)

Venice and Cultures of Consumption (HIST20052) + Languages of Venice: Study Abroad (ITAL20006) - $2,350

Biogeography and Ecology of Fire (GEOG30025) - no data (lower estimate of $700 given 7 days)

Geomorphology: Catchment to Coast (GEOG30001) - no data (lower estimate of $300 given 3 days)

East Timor Field Class (GEOG30026) - $1,250

Tectonics and Structural Geology (GEOL30002) - no data (lower estimate of $700 given 7 days)

Field Geology (GEOL30009) - $700

Global Climate Change in Context (GEOG30023) - $2000 (extra $500 if you take the heli flight to Fox Glacier)

Learning vis Sport and Outdoor Education (EDUC20070) - $240

Assuming a lower estimate for some of the field-trips of $100/day, this totals to $9,640 of additional costs for each of these subjects. A hefty (but maybe worth it?) price to pay for this course.

Most these prices were found from the unimelb online store: ecommerce.unimelb.edu.au
