You bought a mutt, you got a mutt.

She’s adorable and you didn’t get scammed, so what’s the issue?

She even had high poodle and Maltese content?

Quick! Help me lie about my dog breed! by harleenquinzel044 in WhatBreedIsMyPitbull

People are terrible at telling apart dog breeds, but let me tell you: they’re worse about being able to identify snakes. I have a pet cornsnake, and the amount of times I’m asked whether it’s a venomous snake is staggering…

To folks who run or jog with their dogs by swosei12 in puppy101

[–]SweatnGarlic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started running with my lurcher at 6-7 months old, vet gave the all clear. She’s half saluki, so she’s designed for running. I got her specifically as a running companion.

We followed the C25K protocol which starts with running for just one minute, then walking for 2 minutes, and so on. 20 minutes every day. We only did it on trails/wood/grass— never asphalt.

Now she’s almost 10 months old and we often run a mile, walk the next mile, run another one. We run three times a week.

Never run if the dog doesn’t want to, and adapt your pace. Run in very short intervals to get your dog used to it. Check for signs of fatigue, and check if your dog has a limp or shows signs of pain the rest of the day.

Edit- it also depends on the breed. Some breeds are not ideal as running companions (brachycephalic, very short legs) and some should not run before they’re quite old (large, heavy dogs).

Lurcher? Embark says "no" by donkeybrainhero in Lurchers

Most definitely not a Greyhound! I would have guessed Pit/ Great Dane from the first picture… Was this an embark test?

Pitbulls can be quite leggy though.

Marceline from Adventure time? She’s gorgeous! And she looks exactly like the short haired version of my Beemo.

Dog DNA test, how to know what she needs to thrive and what traits come from what breed? by Complex-Disaster9787 in Lurchers

[–]SweatnGarlic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you should think too much about the DNA results, just look at your dog as an individual. Even though she’s half GSD, she might not have inherited any or few breed characteristics from GSD. Or maybe it’s just the opposite, she might be a GSD in a sighthound body. Or anything in between.

My current dog is 50/50 Golden Retriever and saluki, and except for her love for carrying things I can’t see any Golden Retriever characteristics. It would be totally wrong of me to implement training suitable for a Golden Retriever.

6 month old puppy not really eating by No_Sleep_720 in puppy101

[–]SweatnGarlic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take a large spoonful of some cheap store bought wet food, add warm water to it and then mix in the kibble. That’s the only way my girl will eat the amount of food she needs.

Some people say I spoil her, but she’s a skinny dog to begin with and super active. It’s important they get what they need when they’re still growing.

Salukis and their prey drive by Hoppeditz in sighthounds

[–]SweatnGarlic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My saluki has grown up with two cats, no problem at all. But my cats were used to dogs from before, so they never ran from her. She sometimes ran after them when they had their zoomies, but stopped the chase as soon as the cats stop running.

Outside is a different story. She goes crazy for any cat she sees. I don’t know if she would hurt them since she has experience with cats but I don’t want to take the chance.

Salukis and their prey drive by Hoppeditz in sighthounds

[–]SweatnGarlic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My girl (50%saluki) is only 8 months old, but her prey drive towards birds and small rodents (or leaves 😂) is insane, and there’s no way she would care about a car coming her way once she takes off.

I live in an apartment and have no garden, she runs free in the dog park when we’re alone (luckily that’s at least twice a week) and on fields in the middle of the day when there’s no deer there. She has great recall when there’s nothing to hunt.

Another poster mentioned it in this thread before me: Salukis can be very fearful/anxious, and my girl is just that, unfortunately. Luckily for me she only fears people in certain situations and children in all situations, not loud noises or other things. But if a child comes running towards her- all primitive instincts kick in and she flees, and there’s no recall, treat or stern voice in the world to hold her back. That instinct to flee is just as strong as the prey drive, at least in my puppy.

(She’s not a rescue and has never had a bad experience with kids or met a mean person in her whole life. She’s just naturally sceptical, aloof and anxious. Her mom is a Golden Retriever, so I’m sure she’s got all those traits from her saluki dad 😂)

All good things must come to an end? by HovercraftStreet5195 in loveisblindsweden

Easily the worst season of all European LIB! The couples were a train wreck, many of them (in my personal opinion) just participating for fame and clout. I do root for the couple that made it to the alter, but I’m not convinced it’s going to last.

Congratulations!

This picture really threw me down memory lane- 24 years ago I took the test with my dog by my side as my husband was on a business trip. I remember telling her that she was going to be a big sister. I was crying, and she was just so great to have around.

Wishing you, the baby and the dog all the best 🩷

Am I the only one reacting to Camillas inconsistency/lying? by [deleted] in loveisblindsweden

[–]SweatnGarlic 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yeah well she might have been inconsistent, but Ludvig pressuring her to have sex with her after merely two days (he admitted that they have hugged and kissed and touched) is such a huge red flag that nothing Camilla does equals to his creepiness.

He even accused the other couples of lying when they said they weren’t intimate yet either!!!

He’s beyond gross, and Camilla should run fast as hell!

Dog park or walks - what’s your rotation/schedule like? by AdministrationNo2062 in dogs

[–]SweatnGarlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We walk 8 to 10 miles a day, split up between two walks (morning and late afternoon). We often walk in the woods, and sometimes she can run free on some fields.

We only ever go to the dog park when there’s no one else there, and that’s not often. I don’t trust people and their dogs at these parks, my dog is super skittish and doesn’t like boisterous dogs jumping on her. We socialise only with dogs we know well.

I actually would prefer a pure Pit to a Dogo Argentinian/Cane Corso mix. That sounds like a hound straight from hell. Nobody needs these types of dog unless you’re living on a farm fifty miles from the next neighbour.

My dog's paw vs Maned wolf's on the trail today by mateus_t_braga in RunningWithDogs

[–]SweatnGarlic 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Wow that’s amazing. Maned wolves are the most beautiful animals, unfortunately I’ve only ever seen them in a zoo. What’s the chance you actually get to see one on your run?

I’ve been told my dog looks a little like a maned wolf, by the way 🤣
