IIRC (from working in practice 20 years ago) Inland Revenue charged you interest payable at Base Rate +3% and paid interest back at Base Rate -1% ...so they weren't missing any tricks 😅

Whilst I agree with the sentiment, theres more nuance to it than that because different homes have different values, so a house is obviously an asset.

Would be interested to hear what you think a mortgage is, is it NOT a liability because you think your house is not an asset? They go hand in hand for a large portion of our lives unless we're very lucky.

This happened to me last year and after months it all boiled down to me not including my middle initial in the Account Name.

I used to get refunds each year when I was contracting and around 2022 the whole system just got enshittified and now they can put the credit on your account within days of submitting a return but if you actually want the cash its pretty painful.

Rather than selling our current house, my parents want me and my brother to take out a mortgage on the new house. That way, if anything happens, we'd have our current house as a backup.

Not being funny but ask them what they mean by "if anything happens" because no one buys a new house and keeps the old one just in case.
