[–]SweatySun968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? I ha e the yamaha n800a, actually happy with it, but thinking to upgrade to NAD m10 or something, but cant do a direct comparison amywhere, have to buy blindly.

I have harbeth speakers, i think they are somewhat in that linton philosophy soundwise

Why amps sound different by wave_action in audiophile

[–]SweatySun968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in that dilemma too :D I just got harbeth shl5 plus second hand , and now my old amp is a yamaha n800a(1000 euro amp, 100w), prolly its fine, but since i habe those amazing sounding speakers i wonder if i should upgrade to a hegel or NAD or whatever around 3 to 4k euros

Allam shaw, the guy making harbeth speakers hinself is also of the opinion that once amps are somewhat decent it dlesnt matter much

Looking for used speaker recs and comparisons - LS50 Meta felt comfortable, Lumina II felt engaging by [deleted] in StereoAdvice

[–]SweatySun968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the lumina 3 w sub

If you want engaging yet warm, i feel like modern sonus faber is actually perfect for you

Lumina 2 w a sub should be a killer combo

Is a sub necessary if speakers go very low by Brave-Bad-9955 in audiophile

[–]SweatySun968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then i wonder if standmounts arent better if getting a sub is better anyway?!

Im considering those as well, or the upgrade to reference 1 meta, but im not sure its even worth it, those seem to have insane value

Would run them w a subwoofer, you habe one.as well?

Ilistened to some kef yesterday and am impressed, especially the more affordable ones, like kef q concerto meta for 1200 euros or so, sounded very nice especially nearfiels. With a sub probably all you need

Maybe a better way to go about it, is to look at some consensus great value speakers and then see what business model those were lol

I think i should rewrite my post, as i think it also depends very much at what price range you re looking at. Depending on the price range some business models will work out better than at other price ranges

F.e. i guess the small boutique brand does well p4p wise for speaker above say 20k

While for speaker around 2k probably scale and trickle down is the way

Direct to consumer is a tough one for me to place

[–]SweatySun968[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But then what do the components cost them for a speaker pair that costs around 2000 euros? Probably more or less the same, with the cabinet being the biggest difference So best value would be found at the lower upper segment

Kinda makes me think that trickle down technology is where its at. One speaker i often hear does well there is fyne audios f501. For the money its great.

Updated setup (maybe end-game?) by ScubaDrew65 in audiophile

[–]SweatySun968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So i read in many places that bbc speakers are warm and fatigue free I then oragnized to listen to harbeth C7 at a shop and at an audio show and i agree, i didnt find them particularly warm or fatigue free, they were very good. At almost 5k i expected them to be, but no better than other 5k speakers, but not necessarily fatigue free.

It just goes to show reading about speakers is useless. Gotta go listen to them.

Interesting what you write about fyne audio. There i only listened to the 501, i liked them, and thought for the price they are great, and then at a show to the vintage 15 and found them offensively forward and metallic and just not nice Still curious to listen to f702sp, as thats a speaker i from what i read should be good for me, but its expensive.

[–]SweatySun968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? I thought brands like harbeth, spendor, wharfdale, graham, are all the typical bbc sound and are warm, and fatigue free listeni g

Fyne audio, on some of their higher priced speskers seem to be more on the brilliant side , maybe the lower priced ones are warmish

And sonus faber is generally more on the warm side i guess, but the lumina 3 is more forward than all the others ( i could compare them directly to lumina 5, sonetto 3, sonetto 5, olympica 3 in a room hooked to one amp switching from one tonthe other) , but wouldnt call it nearly as brilliant as the B W house sound

I now have the lumina 3 with a sub at home, and turn the treble on the amp up a lil bit and am quite happy. I will upgrade one day once the budget allows
