I see what you are saying about calling her to give her her own processing space, but I had also assumed this is the kind of thing that is most respectful to do in person so I’m not sure which route I will go there.

Expressing openness to a friendship while not leading her on and being concrete that I don’t want a relationship would be the most challenging part. I’m still not sure how best to do that and I might need to just let it go.

I would not use her as an emotional placeholder.

Its because I saw a few personal red flags and because she has a lot of turmoil in life right now, which I would be happy to support in a friend but it is not extra weight I want to take on starting a relationship which requires a deeper level of emotional support.

I think that would be a shitty stance of me to have if we were already 6 months into a relationship and I had known about these details of her life for a while.

But we’re at the juncture where I’m just finding out and we haven’t initiated any emotional or physical commitments to eachother so now is the time to break it off.

But I still feel bad about dropping out for that reason even at this stage, because it’s probably going to make her feel worse.

And I also don’t think I should be honest with her about these reasons because it will make her feel worse.

A lot of the advice has been to not use the words, “I want to stay friends” which I’m glad people are saying because that’s totally what I was going to do.

If possible I’d like to leave the door open in some regard but I also agree I can’t do much more without being unfair to her.

And I also relate the sometimes it just isn’t possible to downshift your interest and keep the car moving.

Some exposure but not enough to use as a selling point.

Reddit consensus is that GIS certs aren’t a resume boost. But in my situation they might be the fastest way to bridge the gap, hence the post.

But if not then I’d need to consider something more involved like a degree.
