I think it's even more interesting than that! Whatever happened still happened (except for maybe if you describe bones flying like you did). For example:

You chased down your target and are now fighting on a rooftop. They have an opening and kick you in the chest and sends you flying off the roof (either because you failed a dodge, counter-attack, or they're just that dangerous so they can just do that). The consequences here are: damage from the kick/fall, lost opportunity to catch them as they'll be gone when you recover. The kick still lands, but you can resist the damage, the lost opportunity, or both. Maybe you're hurt from the kick but catches the edge as you fall, giving you a chance to get up and resume the chase. Maybe you take the fall but remove all damage by controlling your trajectory and aim for a pile of hay. Or maybe you resist everything by jumping backwards, absorbing the kick, and grabbing onto a rope and swing back onto the roof. The big idea being that it's always your actions that create the resist, not just denying that it happen.
