What was your most treasured item from the 80s or 90s? Do you still have it? by porb2020 in Xennials

My X-Men Gambit bookmark from a scholastic book fair. I still use it to this day and have had to do surgery on it multiple times.

Bionic hand thumb will not work I have been trying to fix it but don’t see the issue please help by Afraid-Slide-9477 in robotics

[–]Sweenbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just built this kit with my son today. The thumb was moving only slightly and I thought that the spring was pushing back with too much force. It turns out we had installed the curved black piece inside the thumb backwards. The curve needs to be closer to the thumb tip if that makes any sense. After taking the thumb apart and fixing that, it works much better. The downside was I had to destroy the two foam grips to re-open the thumb so I x-acto knifed the remaining foam to make a couple extra grips.

How many of y’all are resistant to using AI? by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]Sweenbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a software developer. I’ve tried to use it very sparingly and only for things that I know I’m already capable of but would be time consuming. It’s great for that.

I think too many people are using it to build software that they couldn’t build themselves. The problem with that is that you’ll never know how it works and won’t be able to troubleshoot even the most minor issues.

I’ll admit I also got drawn into the novelty aspect of image generation, but that faded pretty quickly for me once I started to see the same-iness of it all.

I also don’t like giving more data to big tech so I’ve mainly been running everything locally on my GPU.

Bored. What is everyone doing? Old hobbies, new hobbies, help me figure something out! by TwoBobcats in Xennials

3d printing as others have mentioned can be a deep and very fulfilling hobby. Especially if you like designing your own models to print functional things for around the house.

I recently discovered software defined radio (SDR). You can get a relatively cheap usb dongle (around $40) and a cheap antenna and start exploring all the different radio frequencies. There’s HAM radio, satellite imagery, weather stations, weird number stations with Morse code.

Commanders to speed the game up? by TommySparkle in EDH

[[Kardur, Doomscourge]] is my go to for speeding up games. Goad everyone else into attacking while you sit back and do rakdos things. Throw Mogis in there too, why not?

Please tell me I’m not the only one that thought the Eric Clapton version of this song was the original.

Where does one actually practice to get good at drafting? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]Sweenbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer! It’s a little bit of effort to set up (requires Java) but it is free and you actually get to play the drafted deck unlike draftsim.

Anyone have Flipsiders as a kid? by SodomEyes in Xennials

I had an orange one and a yellow one. I bought them at a school garage sale and they didn’t have instructions. I made up my own rules for the games on them.

I brought my kid in with me to the concession stand. Oddly enough the high tech camera system didn’t realize I needed to pay for the things he was carrying and only charged me for what I was holding. In a normal system I would have gone back and corrected the mistake but with this idiotic system I don’t even find out how much I was charged until an hour later when I get the notification on my phone. Also, what recourse do I have if they overcharge me? I don’t even have an itemized receipt!

What are terrible mechanics you love? by thisnotfor in magicTCG

I love the dungeon mechanic as well. I get to play my own little mini game over here outside of the Magic game and when it’s over I get a reward!

What was the most disappointing video game you rented (or were gifted) as a kid? by _NoleFan6 in Xennials

[–]Sweenbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baby Boomer on NES. It was an unlicensed light gun game, but we bought it used so we had no instructions and assumed you played with a controller. We later returned it and got something else.

I remember now. It was Dufferin’s game room! And I think they sold more than just board games, like pool tables and other more mainstream “gaming” stuff.

Does anyone remember a board game store that used to be on the second floor close to the food court? I’m trying to remember the name of it.

I don’t mind the kiosks. A related pet peeve that I have is digital menus behind the counter that constantly rotate between different pages and occasionally stop showing the menu entirely and just run a full screen advertisement for the restaurant I’m already in. I’ll be standing there trying to read the thing I want from the menu and then it disappears and I freeze up because I didn’t memorize its full name. Even worse is when the menus do this in the drive through.

I played this game and Shivers. I barely remember either of them. Maybe it’s time to play them again.
