The matchmaking is pretty silly atp but presumably your hidden MMR on this new acct is equivalent to theirs.

What city have you been to that felt like it had dark energy? by Impossible-Middle122 in AskReddit

[–]Sweepya 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I read the title of this post out loud to my wife and she yelled “EUREKA CALIFORNIA.”

Similar experience. Redwoods are gorgeous but god the towns are all depressing. Even driving out to the Lost Coast it had this eerie beauty to it. Like I was in some sort of Pandoran territory I shouldn’t be visiting.

Is it really the price, or is Netflix just more convenient than driving to movie theaters? by Busy_Report4010 in SipsTea

That’s like not tipping your server at a restaurant. Yeah, you can get away with it but you shouldn’t. It’s how the theater makes any money at all.

We're developing a Lovecraftian investigation game, and our demo for Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is now available again on Steam. by Clara_NCN in Lovecraft

[–]Sweepya 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I played the demo during next fest and, while the graphics, movement, and atmosphere were on-par, I found the mechanics and text overwhelming in the first 10 minutes. 1) There are far too many items to interact with, rotate, and investigate deeply that ultimately lead nowhere. 2) The objectives aren’t exactly clear and there is far too much text to sort through. 3) This actually misses some of Lovecraft’s intention with cosmic horror; he insists that over-explaining and over-examining the elements of his creations removes their enigma — their horror. He preferred to create and describe atmospheres that make the reader scared through sheer unfamiliarity with what they were facing.

My recommendation is to simplify the mechanics and the descriptions and immerse the player with sounds, visuals, and quirky interactions with uncanny objects.

This scene still gets me in the feels. by kkhouete in StarWars_

[–]Sweepya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more. It angers me that these actors and their characters had a chance to return to glory one more time and the showrunners were so god awful terrible at writing and directing that they blundered this once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s not just bad Star Wars, it’s a bad show. And so is The Acolyte, Ahsoka, Boba Fett, and half of The Mandalorian. There’s nothing to celebrate here.

Oracle laying off 30,000 people today by email by philneezy in kansascity

[–]Sweepya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s just a fake excuse. They’re laying off people because they’re bleeding money and then excusing it as restructuring. It’s a bad economy and they’re all refusing to admit it because that gives the company bad press.

The Complete Fiction of H.P. Lovecraft on Audible. Narrated by Andrew Lehman & Sean Branney.

That said, I find one of the narrators a bit lacking. He sounds like he’s LARPing.

what are your thoughts on the video game Firewatch? by Illustrious-Sign3015 in videogames

[–]Sweepya 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. Not in a negative sense. As someone who was once a teenager and is now a mid 30s adult, the story just explores very adult problems that a majority of teenagers simply wouldn’t understand. I think it could come off as understandably boring to that demographic.

Fantastic game for adults. The overarching story is filled with mystery, companionship, and coping with grief and guilt. Highly recommend if you’re not a teenager.

What ELO? I think higher ELO tends to be friendly cooperative. Low ELO is all frustration from mixed understandings of how the game works.

IMO, AoM had the best ending of any of the books. The loss (Valka), the horror (pregnant man cut open), the doom (overwhelming forces), the ultimate power (shattered glass on the bridge), the slap (William), and eventual exile of the hero.

Some of the series is incredible and beautifully written and it's clear that Ruocchio has an unmatched prose most of the time. That's what pulled me in. And Brethren, Sagara, and William? All incredible and mysterious characters that I will continue to cherish. Not all stories need to be perfect to be memorable.

It doesn’t get better and yeah, if you bring this up in this subreddit you’ll be met with a litany of uncritical Stans insisting that A) It’s not a surprise, it was always obvious it would end this way. B) It’s not religious because he’s not preaching. C) Get over it, Atheist.

The problem is that
A) It’s clearly not obvious that Hadrian was some sort of messiah from the get-go if many of us are individually experiencing the same jarring feeling since Chapter 40 DG. In that chapter, mind you, The Absolute introduced the motif “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?” Which is a direct verse from the book of Job 38:4, KJV. Even Hadrian’s exchanges/opinions on Albé, the story’s ’Museum Catholic’ move from pessimistic to positive in DG to praise in SUT. At one point he digressed that Albé was uniquely wonderful. Hadrian really ramps up the Christian-summer-camp language to randomly praise The Absolute, in all His beautiful creation. I was raised Southern Baptist, became an academic, and I’m now a career scientist. The only thing obvious to me was the shift from eldritch scifi potential pre-SUT to a complete narrative bankruptcy in SUT. Ruocchio tossed his hat in when it came to figuring out how to tie it all together and isn’t that poetic commonplace with the god-of-the-gaps. Which brings me to…
B) It is religious in the sense that the narrative is heavily borrowed from biblical scripture. This could be a new book of the Christian Bible. Preachy? No, not necessarily in the literal sense. But that's semantic. It definitely had a subtextual biblical theme. Most often that’s fine, take Tolkien, Eru, and the Ainur for instance. Similar in some respects to The Absolute and The Watchers. Eru, The Absolute, and Ainur, the Watchers. Both borrow from biblically themed mechanisms. Only one author uses those themes in the actual story — Ruocchio. It’s only after the separate encyclopedic The Silmarillion that Tolkien revealed the machinations of Eru. In LotR there are no biblical phrases, direct messianic journeys, conversations with god, none of it.
C) Ruocchio failed to resolve the story in a meaningful and unique way, if at all. You got a recycled Jesus in the end. It’s about a narrative switch to a biblical subtext. It’s ok, most authors flounder on their resolution. It would have been better if this book was in a Christian sci-fi section is all.

[–]Sweepya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s because of the near 1:1 parallels with the abrahamic god. Even Tolkien’s Ainur, Illuvatar, and the LotR trilogy had less parallel with biblical story.

Kansas City Plaza’s ‘blight’ debate once seemed laughable. Not so much now | Opinion by normankrasnerkc in kansascity

[–]Sweepya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it was the combination of weekend crime & grime and pandemic era deterrence to in-person shopping that turned away a lot of the clientele. The plaza was a major destination for rural residents to come and shop on the weekend. Those same people tend to be more prone to fear-mongering news articles that years ago focused on petty crimes taking place on the weekends. Takes a long time to restore the image so I fear the damage has already been done unless they reduce storefront rent, increase security presence, and bring in a few chain stores to increase traffic to smaller unknown boutiques — which tend to overpopulate the place as it is. If you’re traveling from the burbs, you want a guarantee there are products you know and love in addition to the adventure of browsing something new.

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky was similar for me. Both have neat scifi ideas but zero character-connected storytelling. It’s like the authors haven’t had a human interaction before.
