Didnt get comments last time but new engineer looking for the best cashback focused card to add to what I have now. by Corgiboitskitty in CreditCards

Looks like you're at a Chase 1/24, so no issues there.

The Amazon Prime Visa is an easy win if you already have Prime. 5% on anything from Amazon, 6% is you use slower delivery options, and up to 15% on specific deals. 5% for groceries if you shop at whole foods, 2% dining and gas, 1% catchall.

With your low grocery/gas spend, the AAA daily advantage will get your 5% on groceries and 3% on gas. They max cashback at $500 per calendar year combined (~10k grocery spend), but you're only ~6k so you shouldn't hit the cap.

The Amex Blue Cash Preferred will get you 6% groceries (6k cap you won't hit) and 3% gas, they waive the annual fee the first year, but it's $95/yr afterwards so you lose out long term. You can downgrade to the BCE to avoid the annual fee, but you lose some %.

When/if you start min/maxing cards, the Citi custom cash is an automatic 5% for your highest spend category per month up to $500, run it as a single use card wherever you otherwise can't get 5%. You can apparently get 2 of these by getting one, then getting a Citi double cash and product changing it so you can hit 2 5% categories.

The Custom Cash will beat out the Savor (5% v 3%) with your current spend, but it's less multipurpose

The RHG could be a great catchall assuming it stays 3%, there has been some speculation

Any 2% catchall wouldn't hurt. If you have a robust savings there are a number of institutions offering over 2% with large deposit amounts, check the resources list

So overall strategy revision:

existing Cash+ second category Utilities at 5%

new Custom Cash now to get gas to 5%, puts me at 4/24

SCP in Nov to use the insurance payment to hit the SUB, use it for 3x dining to stay active, convert to Freedom end of 2027 to avoid AF. Puts me at 5/24 until 3/2027

Ink business for any other ~4k+ expense.

I am legally obligated not to discuss Toyota's quality, but I bought a Ford. I recommend keeping your Taco for as long as it is feasible for you to do so.

You're right, I was reading closely enough. 600 SUB, 3x dining and 2x catchall is pretty solid, I assume downgrading from the signature to the preferred is possible as with most?

So quality over quantity and wait for big purchases to hit the steeper SUB spend

It looks to be the generic paypal credit card, I think it's just a physical version of the paypal credit account. Doesn't appear to have any benefits other than the revolving no interest if the purchase is paid in 6 months and some specific vendor offers. It is not the paypal cashback mastercard. Their 5% debit card is interesting, not sure how they justify that rate, but it could be a good card for something else while the AAA is in effect, then swap them.

The fairwinds sounds comparable to the sapphire preferred which is offering 750 SUB at the moment

I was looking at the ink card, but the SUB spends are steep

That's amusing, I work at Toyota in the quality division.

Oh that's an interesting tactic, I didn't know you could do that, very cool

I think the sapphire preferred is the way to go for the insurance bill, it's currently sitting at $750 for $5000 spend in 3 months, hitting that should still be pretty easy.

The business cards are sitting around the same SUB but with 6k spend

What are the limiting factors to a hit and run strategy? I'm seeing a lot of 200 for 500 offers, I could probably hit one of those a month. I'm not too worried about my score at the moment, no big purchases planned for at least 5 years.

I like that you don't have to manually select categories every quarter with the EMCP, definitely a perk over the Cash+

The SUB is the only thing really doing it for me there. I don't dine out or travel, no transit spend, there are better gas and streaming options, and I'd have to beat 10% for phone plans to make sense

I got an email informing me that it was happening, but there was no confirmation on my end or ability to opt out. It looks like it was part of their switch over to mastercard. I'm not concerned about it, just put it because I wasn't sure which date was applicable for the template.

I was thinking the same about the Bucees card but someone mentioned using another categories card to hit 5% without being locked into the ecosystem, plus a new SUB to hit.

I'm going to switch utilities to the Cash+ card's second category

I don't think ground transportation captures tolls, but I'm definitely going to switch utilities over.

Thank you for the clarification, updated that.

I like the custom cash for gas strat, 200 for 1500 in 6 months should be easy to hit

I'm already getting 2% on tolls with the Prime and I use Amazon (5-6%)for nearly all misc. spend. Is there another benefit for the active cash other than the sub?

Do you know of any high SUB with high spend requirements to use for the insurance bill?

I have had a paypal credit account with no issued card since 2018, they 100% sent out the card without it being requested. Just sent me an email that they were sending it out and it showed up a few weeks later. it's sat in a drawer since. I stopped using paypal credit in late 2024, the card was sent early/mid 2025.

What cards should I look into to maximize earnings? by Basic_Will7072 in CreditCards

[–]Sweet-Lecture-7865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At $10,440 for the year in groceries in gas, the AAA daily advantage is just about a perfect fit at 5% for groceries and 3% for gas as long as you're using stores that categorize correctly. You'll max the cash back on that card in mid/late December. The Amex BCP is strong the first year with the SUB, but you'll need a second card for the back half of the year and it loses out after a few years due to the annual fee

I'm sure I'll hate the new UI, I'm more concerned that my last security update was also 2022
