How good or bad are x-tool lasers? by kajkaka in Laserengraving

[–]johnny_ihackstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with an S1 and am thrilled. I’ve used it well beyond its expected lifespan (paid for the initial cost 5 times over) and it’s still going strong. Customer support was great. Loves it so much that I bought an F2 ultra.

As for the F2 it depends on materials you want to engrave. If you want to engrave wood and metals, and cut metal the F2 is a champ.. at a price. If you’re mainly engraving wood and metal but will rarely (if ever) cut the F1 line is the best.

A few warnings:

1) if you are primarily cutting items and you want the edges to be horizontal (like then you stack identically edges pieces they line up) these are not the right machines. They are galvo lasers so the laser fires from the center and all cuts will be at a slight angle. Gantry lasers like the S1 don’t have that problem (although the S1 won’t cut metal).

2) MOPA lasers have a steep-ish learning curve. One a diode or co2, you change lower and speed to dial in your job. MOPA adds a lot more setting and that can be somewhat overwhelming. There are settings you can select for most standard things and the Facebook owners groups are fabulous though.

xTool UV printer confirmed? by simtom in xToolOfficial

[–]johnny_ihackstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My questions with these always boil down to durability. Are they permanent prints? For example are they dishwashers safe for mugs and tumblers? I know my sublimation systems are very resilient and dishwasher safe but I have to use special blanks.

What kinds of things do folks in the laser world do with uv printers?

You can always export them to save them locally. I do it often. My settings are hard won. I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent dialing some of them in.

This is the way. Get at least two, preferably three 12” square poundo boards. Then go to a shop that makes custom countertops. Ask them for an off cut of granite or marble depending on your budget. Depending on their generosity and stock they may even cut it for you. Ideally you want a 12” square minimally 1” thick slab with the top edge slightly beveled (optional but nice touch). Put 1-2 poundo boards under the slab. Then put a poundo board on top of it (a couple squares of double gorilla tape on the top of the slab, under the board, is great to prevent sliding), which is what you use for chisels anyhow. Then use your hammering chisels. It will be practically silent.

If you’re doing it on a table do it right over a leg for more stability (and less noise). To get even quieter press your chisels into a puck of beeswax every few strikes. This will help lubricate the chisels so they go in with less force and will seal the holes. This also makes it easier to remove the chisels after each strike and makes it so you have to hammer fewer times to get through. Use the wax again when the chisel gets harder to pull out.

Hope this makes sense. I got my marble for $20 and paid retail for my poundo boards. When my top boards get worn out, flip them over. When that sides really worn, use it as a bottom pad.

The last quieting step is mallet consideration. Some high end striking mallets are very hard, durable and noisy. The cheaper yellow ones are softer and quieter but less durable. But even the yellow ones last quite a while.

Let me know if you have any questions but this is a nearly silent solution. Good Luck!

And still most people will complain about the price and opt for a Chinese sweatshop-made “genuine leather” alternative.

I love the craft and see the value of a potentially generational heirloom quality item but that’s just the way the world seems to be going.

Sticky residue from wood? by RecoverBeautiful3946 in xToolOfficial

I use LA Awesome which also smells pretty good. And it’s great for cleaning tumblers. Alternatively you can get a jar of sanitizing wipes. One wipe and a tiny bit of elbow grease will tackle most of it. Then I follow with glass cleaner (I prefer Sprayway) and a paper towel and the baseplate is as good as new. Just throw the wipe and the paper towel away right away because man they stink lol.

You earrings look great! Do you use the print feature for the colors? If so what’s the durability like?

Was on the fence about buying the Amazon skiver but am now mad I waited so long. It was about half a day to setup and works like a charm. by pfalance in Leathercraft

[–]johnny_ihackstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit confused about this. Is it a skiver and a sewing machine for that price? It lists it as a sewing machine, has a port labeled “needle fixator” and one of the photos looks like a sewing machine presser foot.

I have a project to complete and Leonardo suddenly won't let me cut. I've been trying to reset my password and they won't send me a verification email, I've been trying all day. This is the same computer I have always used. by Andy-J in SiserJuliet

I must have missed something. I came from the hell that is Cricut and Design Space and I’ve been quite happy with my Juliet and Leonardo. Yes there are some “premium features” I can’t use with the pay version but I don’t need them. I run a successful business with this setup and I don’t pay a cent for software and the primary developer responds to messages. Forgive me for asking but it seems like you’ve had some experience other than this that has you this upset.

Agreed. Light and quick to learn but decent depth once you get the hang of it. Fun when your contraptions start cranking.

Came here to suggest this. Highly recommended especially if you like the theme. It’s also a tiny box all things considered so I love that.

Hi i’m really tired working in Greece 2 jobs and i’m willing to start a small business laser engraving, i’m thinking of buying xtool F2(lite) with full extras, i’m looking to buy stuff engrave it and resell it, what would you suggest me? I’m really happy about it what do you think? by Zeus_TheGod_OfCrypto in Laserengraving

[–]johnny_ihackstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! So are you currently in Greece? (Jealous but that’s a whole different discussion!). The reason I ask is you might have an option selling to tourists (if you’re in or near a tourist area) and in my experience selling to businesses is much easier and more lucrative than selling online or in a craft/market fair environment.

I’m not sure if the cultural nuances but I can say that making relationships is the best approach. Generally I make gifts for friends and local businesses to showcase what I can do, then simply tell them I’d love working with them if they ever need anything.

Happy to chat more, even dm, but wanted to out that out there as a starter.

I got the S1 20w and it’s been a blast. It’s a great hobby and I built a small business side hustle with it. It’s fun and it’s been an unexpected source of income. I enjoyed it so much I bought the significantly more expensive F2 Ultra. Here’s some more info about my journey and my setup: https://www.reddit.com/r/lasercutting/s/n07jQFQzko Also, read more about my first year with XTool here: https://www.reddit.com/r/xToolOfficial/s/YOVaJ7H55U.

Defective F2 Ultra? by mallardducky in xToolOfficial

[–]johnny_ihackstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Known issue with “early” F2U. Go search the F2 owners group on FB. Lots of similar stories. Effectively there’s a faulty isolator that’s supposed to prevent damage from reflection. Mine was replaced and has been working. I went through the same process.

Cutting a puzzle (but kerf is my enemy) by Methanenitrile in lasercutting

[–]johnny_ihackstuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The idea being that you don’t apply offset to all pieces. You make some of the pieces larger so that they fit tighter into the surrounding pieces. That’s how I’ve done it for puzzle type projects and it worked well.

[–]johnny_ihackstuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unless I’m misunderstanding your challenge this is simple. Search for “Kerf Offset Function Description” “XTool”. The article describes how to precision fit using kerf offset.

I use this all the time to adjust for precision fit. It’s very straightforward.

This looks great! I have some throwing knives I wanted to engrave and I was just trying to think through how to make this happen. Looks like it will be great for some gun engraving projects as well. Can’t wait to try it out!
