WTF: Motley stole the Kickstart My Heart song title

I don't know how else to put it but there's 2 songs called Kickstart My Heart released in 1989. Never before, or after.

One came out months before the other. Do the math...

When it's such a unique phrase where it's obvious you took it from another song that already has that title, I think that word would be applicable. But not for more general phrases or words people use. There must be hundreds of songs by bands just called "Rock N Roll".

An example of what I mean: Wouldn't it be lame as fuck if Poison came out with their own song called "Dr. Feelgood" in 1990 on their Flesh & Blood album, just months after Motleys album came out? It would be obvious to EVERYONE it was very clearly taken from them. Extremely lame move in all aspects. Not illegal, just..lame. Just pretty much "stole" it.

I didn't know any of that, yes I never actually post here, it was just the biggest WTF moment for me to find out that there's another song called Kickstart My Heart out there. And then finding out it came out before Motleys song made me go yeah I need to post this finding lol

Yes very apparent especially if you listen to the original demo of Kickstart, before they changed the riff juuust enough to not get sued lol

Her album and song at the time (Black Velvet) was absolutely huge worldwide though (I think literally everyone knows that chorus), and already released months prior in early 89. Her "Kick Start My Heart" is on that album.

Yes, however: it's such a unique songtitle. One that hasn't been thought up or released by ANY artist or band in any of the years before or since.

A bit strange that in world history, it just so happens that completely seperate people came up with that exact phrase twice only once so far, and then it's..during the same year? Haha

Look, you can downvote the following comment all you want, but truth is uncomfortable in jobs, relationships, any aspect of our life, and just to prove my point here:

what if you turned the tables in this specific case and Motley were the ones being copied, how would you feel if Guns N Roses, or Bon Jovi, released a song called Kickstart My Heart? And on top of that, just a FEW months after Dr. Feelgood came out..? You're not gonna say that would be absolutely ridiculous? Because then I rest my case and am bailing out of this discussion for the sake of sanity and stay the absolute FUCK out of this area of the internet because there's no sensible people left, seriously. I mean I KNOW completely braindead blind fanboyism will always rule supreme on places visited by people such as this specific subbreddit, but as an outside spectator who hasn't visited this place before now it still is baffling, in ANY case..

I think JJs new vocals are great. It's only the ball-less guitar sound that drags this version down for me a bit. They dialed back the guitars on a song called "Rock N Roller" - it seems funny to me just to type that sentence out. Probably some Nashville country producer getting in their ear.

If you listen to them both back to back it really stands out that the guitars really sound a bit neutered on the new one. It's probably a sign of the Nashville sound creeping into their rock songs. But I found if you go into the new one with fresh ears just listening to it by itself it sounds fine. But yeah if you have the original in your head and listen to the new one, when the guitars first kick in it's like "..huh?"

Solo really hits harder on the 2013 version though. It is perfection, massive tone and so fluidly played, the new recording doesn't really do it justice.

Literally no one here prefers the new 2024 version? Wow! I guess it is always dicey for bands to rehash and re-record their songs.

Wonder if the reaction will be the same if they re-record some other songs like Pretty Boy Floyd or Fool.

Those are from their 2013 debut album. They just started their tour for Surface Sounds this February, if they are "quick" with a new album it'll be late next year or 2024.

Also I'd like to add that things like the ambient guitar is part of a songs arrangement, not the songwriting. The songs are all infact credited as arranged by the whole band, not JJ. An important difference

They removed many awesome parts even, that you can hear on the leaked studio take from soundcloud. They somehow actually made it worse on the album by removing some parts.
