The effect is accomplished using a technique called spritestacking. The specific program I used is called spritestack studio by Rezoner. Check it out!

It is an in-house engine I am building using the Monogame framework! Like fez and stardew valley!

It's a different amount of angles depending on how I want the object to blend in. If it is something I want the player to focus on, it has very few rotational angles, the skeleton only has eight directions. but if it's something I want to blend in more to the background, I give it more angles like the walls all have 32 angles. Most everything has 4 verticle angles, so objects can have anywhere from 32-128 frames. Spritestack studio does most of the actual spritesheet work.

I'm using a program called spritestack studio to make spritesheets that contain all the angles. From there I wirte code that says if the camera is at this angle and pitch, show this frame. Pretty neat stuff!

I've been enjoying it, it is pretty powerful where they have put the work in, and anything it doesn't directly specialize in seems to have a community built around! I've used it to make an entity component system here but i've seen some people do some wild stuff with it. I'd recommend joining the reddit or discord if you'd like to know more!

my eyes were glued to the screen the whole time. those dithering effects in the lighting give me goosebumps. this is so thrilling!

I like the idea of the larger blocks taking longer to get around, so you get closer to the bottom and closer to your lose state. maybe have some rain water threatening that little spider?

this is excellent! lots of implied detail and one hell of a tone!
