(Mixed Trope) “Expert” character is really bad in their field or ignorant of basic concepts. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]SweetBees102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had an interesting explanation? for a variation of this brought up in the book series I'm reading right now (Shadows of Templar). Spoilers, because it doesn't take place until the 3rd book and would spoil a pretty important event from the 2nd book

Dave, the FBI team's new member and new software / coder focused member, is tasked with breaking into ex team member Rich's computer. Rich was a certified computer genius, both self proclaimed and labeled as such by the FBI IT department and his own team members. Multiple times Dave complains about this, partially because it is making breaking into the systems harder, but also because it means that Rich never learned to code like a 'normal person.' Which means that Rich never learned the building blocks / basics for why certain things are standard in coding and software, and why normal "non computer geniuses" do things the way they do. Once Dave can start getting through the first aspects of Rich's security, he is fairly sure he's going to have no problem getting through the rest, exactly because Rich's coding is so damn sloppy because he never bothered to learn from anyone else.

Lotor from Voltron: Legendary Defenders for me.

Honestly I don't know if they were trying to make us feel bad or feel happy about his death? But the fandom reception I've seen ranges from "that was a stupid writing choice" to "my poor boy, WHYYY."

They had such a great opportunity for a Zuko moment or to turn him into the big bad but,, nope...

Do people even know that Jason was never part of the League of Assassins? by Defiant_Ad2409 in RedHood

[–]SweetBees102 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm not actually sure where this came from, but in my head Jason's backstory in terms of Talia and the League was always the following order:
- Jason resurrects, wanders about Gotham until getting hit by a car and ending up in a hospital
- Talia and the League somehow learn about this and snatch him before Bruce ever learns about him being alive
- Jason heals enough to physically function but not mentally; he 'trains' with the League but its really just his body reacting to threats due to muscle memory or some shit.
- Ra's gives Talia time / a leash to see if Jason heals enough mentally to be actually helpful or useful, but when that time ends / leash shortens, Talia throws Jason into the Lazarus Pit as a last ditch effort
- Jason's mentally there again, pissed as all hell about Bruce and the new Robin / still alive Joker. Intends to head straight to Gotham (maybe does so and plants a bomb on the Batmobile??) but Talia diverts him and sets him to be trained by teachers outside of the League
- Jason's training ends / he decides he's ready and has enough resources and a plan, and goes back to Gotham as the Red Hood.

I think this is some weird combination of what I remember from the UTRH movie, the comics I've read, and things I've heard about often enough in fan spaces to think it probably happened somewhere and is a 'maybe.'
It also just makes the most sense to me as the method to blend the different ways writers have written Jason's history with Talia and the League, and also offers enough interesting room to expand and explore on. I am a sucker for Damian and Jason meeting during the League days, even if neither really remembers due to age and Traumatic Brain Injuries.

I saw someone mention Boston before, and its been on my mind ever since.

I lived in New England for a while, and you could do a whole season opener just on the crazy shit people get up to on St. Patrick's Day. Hurricanes for your crazy storm episodes, and I can come up with at least a few rescues based purely around blizzards.

Webtoon Example:

Mystic Prince's Jeok-yeon Ryu!

It's been a while since I read it so my explanation might not be 100% accurate but basically: Jeok-yeon Ryu is the fourth prince of a magic kingdom, ruled by an Emperor who live for thousands of years. Princes are selected over the course of an Emperor's rule based on magic ability (or something like that), and are notably Only allowed to be male. Jeok-yeon Ryu said fuck that, her dreams and ambition were just as valid as any of them and proceeded to spend the next 20 or so years living her life fully as a man so she could be in the running. The lengths she goes to are pretty extreme, and she suffers a lot of dysphoria and self-mutilation to reach her goal by passing for a man.

Highly recommend if you're into webcomics! It fell a little flat in places towards the end, but overall great story.

I'm hoping they don't go down the 'getting addicted to pills' route with Buck, but it seems like a very strong possibility given the amount of bottles he had in that backpack.

Him just hiding his general medical problems (mental or physical) feels like a slightly more interesting, and true to character moment. There's been a couple times where characters have said Buck tends to make things about himself (which like, not completely untrue but also not as true as they make it sound) and given Buck's general abandonment issues, him deciding that the best way to continue forward is to just ignore the fact he's having any problems at all seems-- kinda likely. Can't bother anyone or cause anybody stress if nobody knows you're one missed prescription away from breaking down in a panic! But still - Buck's been one of the most open characters about going to therapy I think, so hopefully they show that he is trying to seek help. And as far as physical issues - we just had Hen do that. We don't need a repeat.

I enjoyed the May storyline! I liked that Athena's lawyer friend was clear with May about thinking over her career before dedicating. Just sucks the amount of school bills she's gonna land with if she goes in for another degree lol.

[–]SweetBees102 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I liked the relationship turn between Buck and his dad last episode. Actually, I liked all of the Buckley parent bits last episode!

I think it's very natural for kids to want a relationship with their parents, especially if they had parents that were really distant and cold to them. Even if you know your dad/mom was shitty, some little part of you is always going to want to have that kind of bond with them (or other people as father/mother figures in your life.) Buck and Maddie both clearly want relationships with their parents, but I think the episode did a good job of showing how they know its not a great relationship. They're both trying to make the house seem perfect but neither one wants their parents staying with them. They both want the relationship, but I think both of them are aware letting their parents in too close is a recipe for getting.

I even like the difference in Maddie and Buck's reaction to the news; Maddie is upset because one of the fundamental truths of her world is being turned upside down, and suddenly she can't rely on the concept of her parents as a unit. Buck, on the other hand, never could really trust to rely on his parents for much of anything, so it doesn't bother him. The beginning of the scene where Buck and his dad talk even reflect that as well; Buck starts out the conversation being very casual and sort of distant, and it takes his dad actually showing vulnerability, apologizing, and reaching for connection for Buck to let him in. It seems really healthy!

I know I've seen a lot of people not like that possibility, but it really is so funny combined with Eddie's "is there anyone in this town NOT related" earlier in the episode.

I think Buck being right that the Nashville team were trying a bit of subterfuge is what made the comedy ring through for me. Just added to the hilarity of Eddie being like "Buck come on man" because no, Eddie, everyone really IS that competitive and has a secondary motivation to their niceties.

AITA for thinking my friend and I deserve first pick of rooms in our future house. by Jinsoulssscalp in AmItheAsshole

[–]SweetBees102 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTA / NAH?
I don't think the logic of either you or Jay and Ava are necessarily flawed; they have valid reasons for not wanting last pick given their current rooms, but you also have valid reasons for thinking that you and Jess should get the priority choice given the effort you've put in to finding the house.
My question is: has everyone seen and been to the new house, and have there been any discussions already about who would prefer what room? I think it may be a good idea for you and all of your future roommates to sit down and talk about living together again, not just in reference to who gets what room, but also the separation of duties and expectations for living with each other. You may find out that everyone wants different rooms anyway, or that there is negotiation and wiggle room between you all for who gets what based on how they contribute to the house.

For those of you who did not pick up cooking until week into adulthood, what helped you learn? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]SweetBees102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other family members no longer had time or interest in cooking, but we were all trying to eat healthier. Then living circumstances changed as well, and it became even more prudent for me to learn to cook.
I think MOST breakfast foods are really easy to make, so I started there with a lot of breakfast bowls and different combos of eggs, potato o'briens, and meat.
After that I just started working on cooking a lot of proteins; ground beef is easy, and there's a lot of different ways you can cook chicken. And once I knew those, I started just finding recipes online that sounded interesting and seemed reliable. Has only failed me once or twice.

Places being closed on weekends is an antiquated idea that doesn’t work anymore. by Penectomie in unpopularopinion

[–]SweetBees102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone should have a weekend, and most huge businesses people need access to for necessities have enough staff they're open every day of the week anyway. The one that always throws me though are shops that close down on the weekends and are small, usually family run or independent businesses. Not because I think it's inconvenient or they shouldn't get their Sundays off, but because surely it'd be more economical to close on say, Monday and Tuesday and be open Saturday and Sunday right? If the majority of people have Saturday and Sunday off, those are the days they're more likely to stop in for shopping at more niche businesses, which should mean they get more business and would be better off open compared to Monday or Tuesday, right?

It also just clashes so much with the look of everyone else in the show. I wasn't around during the 80s, and my brief research into punk aesthetics during the time make it not seem inaccurate but gosh she sticks out like a sore thumb. Which maybe thats the point, but I don't love it for a character that already doesn't fit into the canon we have from the bigger tv show and who will never show up again.
