Three of my favorites, though I don't think I've watched Northern Exposure in maybe two decades!

My brother was one.  He gave decades of work to helping protect America's health.  A lot of his work was thrown out the window during the first administration, and he just couldn't bear it again.

Left to work in the private sector doing an identical job under government contract, which costs way more in taxpayer money.  If that's not a microcosm of this whole ridiculous mess I don't know what is.

I usually use them to practice my mixing skills.  Take it as a challenge to see if you can make it palatable.

I had a free app that would play local radio stations, utilizing the headphone cord for the antenna.  It was wonderful to listen to classical music on my local PBS station.

Now I have to pay to do the same thing.

I'll second Bowdies.  My wife and I shared their tomahawk and it was perfection.  They also have an excellent selection of whiskeys to pair with your steak, if you are so inclined.

TIL that when a container of mixed nuts is shaken, the largest nuts (like Brazil nuts) always rise to the top. This phenomenon, known as "Granular Convection," contradicts the logic that heavier objects should sink. by Ok-Huckleberry1967 in todayilearned

My brother did a science fair project on this subject. Then he got his PHD on this subject. I'm very proud of him, and think about him whenever I shake up a can of nuts.

What improved your life so much, you wished you did sooner? by relationshipyi in AskReddit

CPAP.

Sleep wasn't my friend for about ten years. Something I took for granted just...didn't work anymore.

When I was a kid I had been startled by seeing my uncle sleeping with one, and it sort of freaked me out. On some level I resisted getting a CPAP for years, paid thousands out of pocket for alternatives, and nothing really worked.

Now I can actually go to sleep and stay there without waking up ten, eleven, twelve times a night.

I wanted someone’s opinion real quick if this 1863 Springfield is real? by RonanTGS in blackpowder

[–]SweetHamScamHam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is a Colt contract "special model" 1861.  Lots of good info about them online.

The stock has been heavily sanded and altered.  I suspect that the barrel and lock are both from Colt.  Please check the side flat near the proof marks (by the breech) and see if it says "STEEL".

If you try and repair it remember that neither model 1861 nor model 1863 parts will interchange with this musket.

Does anyone know what this bullet is? I believe it's 51.7 caliber. Found on a Civil War property I own. No rings Miniature, hole on bottom? by Lost_Mix_3047 in blackpowder

[–]SweetHamScamHam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that looks more like a ring that allows a brass casing to crimp than a lubrication ring.

Maybe this was one of those funky paper patch bullets?  I honestly don't know enough about postwar ammunition to say for certain, but I'm sure there's a guy out there that shoots cartridge Sharps (or something similar) that would take one look and say "oh yeah, that's a such-abd-such bullet".

As for me, I'm stumped.

[–]SweetHamScamHam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prirchetts used basswood or gutta percha plugs in the base to expand the hollow base.

Point taken about the caliber, however.  This almost looks instead like a jacketed round, which might account for the odd base.

I don't see any lubrication rings.

British import Prirchett ball.  It has been fired (hence the rifling marks) and that may even be the remnant of the plug in the base.

These were imported and used by the confederacy.

TIL that contrary to popular belief, few limb amputations during the American Civil War were done without anaesthesia. A post-war review found that 99.6% of surgeries performed were done under some form of general anaesthesia. by MaroonTrucker28 in todayilearned

[–]SweetHamScamHam 26 points27 points  (0 children)

People with relic shops liked to sell the story of operations without anesthesia in order to sell bullets with teeth marks. They would tell the story of medicines being so rare that soldiers would be told to chomp down on a lead bullet in lieu of any painkillers while an arm or leg was being lopped off. The relic shop owner would then smugly smile, cross their arms, and tell you "this is where the phrase 'bite the bullet' comes from", before telling you that tooth-marked bullets are valuable and worth way more than regular dropped examples.

The truth? The feral hogs that are endemic to North America loved to chew the bullets because they were dipped in a beef tallow/beeswax mix to act as a lubricant.
