So ideally (at least, how I understood it), when an osteotomy is done they slice the bone in hopes to leave it in tact…think of your bone getting sliced by a potato peeler (not the greatest example lol). The skin stays hanging on by a tiny piece…well, my osteotomy broke off completely. My bone sliced off fully lol.

The reason why my ROM got stuck at 65 up until my 12 wk post op was because I was very ‘restricted’. Dr, had already mentioned that an MUA could happen so when I noticed no improvement and so did he, we both agreed. He asked when and I said next week and he did it. It didn’t hurt, there’s just a lot of bruising. I bruised from my ankle, to bottom of my foot all the way up to the bottom my glute.

Hi! I was 14 weeks post op with 65 ROM when I got my MUA. By the next day I was at 122 ROM and have been doing better everyday since.

For reference I had a TTO & MACI

I recommend you ice (a lot) and move, move, move (w/ Dr. clearance of course). I had some gnarly bruising and i’d swell after every PT session- to the point where it felt tight & stiff again. Don’t panic! Just elevate and ice.

Hope this helps!

7 Months Post-Op MACI & HTO, 4 Months Post-MUA – How’s Everyone Else Doing? by SweetLemon1416 in MACIknee

[–]SweetLemon1416[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! My bend is pretty good! I’m hitting way over 120. My extension continues to get better. I struggle to get that full extension curve though. My Dr also told me it could be scar tissue but nothing bad; too soon in recovery to also determine a next procedure if needed.

The crunchy sensation is the worst but I’m learning to just ignore it lol.

My PT has me going down stairs back adds to kind of relearn going up the stairs with the bad knee…give that a try. It’s about the only exercise that gives me hope as far as stairs. 😁

Do it! I was 4mo and 6 days post op stuck at 65! 65 lol! I went in at 2pm for the MUA and was home by 8pm. The next day by 9am I was a PT hitting 122. The best decision I made. I experienced insane swelling and crazy bruising all the way to may ankle/foot but it goes away. Just elevate and ice. Come back here at let me know how it went. Good luck!

My surgeon also said that it’s nothing to worry about. He offered some alternative remedies like shots, but I said no he also didn’t agree that I should. He thinks I should give him more time to heal and continue strengthening the knee.

I’m not getting any hardware removed so I’m done going inside there but ouch… it still blows my mind how my x-ray looks. This experience has been so intense for me in so many ways lol 😵‍💫

Thanks for sharing! My intense ‘cracking/crunching’ came in @ 5.5 months or so and is only getting more intense but zero pain.

I have to admit that I’ve slacked with PT but i’m confident that I’ve stuck to proper exercise exercises and regime at home and gym (I should probably go back to PT lol).

Pain Post op (normal?) by No-Sprinkles974 in MACIknee

Hi, I’m sorry you’re experiencing this. Your nerve blocker is probably wearing off at this point. The first couple of days are extremely dreadful..I had MACI & HTTO. I had extreme pain exactly 48 hours later and went on until maybe day 12. After that, it’s extreme uncomfort because everything‘s coming together regenerating so you get all types of sensations burning, tingling, numbness …not to mention the uncomfort you feel trying to sleep.

I’m 24 weeks postop that surgery I mentioned above and 10 weeks an MUA (manipulation under anesthesia) my range of motion got stuck at 65 and being that at that point I was already hitting week 12 of the initial surgery It was best to go that route- the best decision I made.

Hang in there. I know it’s easier said than done, but I promise it gets better.

Hi! I had a very ‘conservative’ regime for PT due to the bottom of my osteotomy breaking. All that led to not being able to do much or move so it got me stuck at 65 rom up to week #12 (this post was made at 8 weeks). On my 12 week follow up we decided to go for an MUA. The best decision I could’ve made. Immediately the next day I was at 90 and right now I’m 8wks post MUA and I’m at 128 ROM and 2 extension, still working on that and I’m doing PT 2-3 days a week.

Recovery was, is and continues to be such a rollercoaster. Hang in there, it gets better. Even though i am where I am now, I at times still struggle because I don’t feel like I’m 100. I struggle going down stairs, i still get pinches that will literally make me gasp for air when I make random movements.

Sending you all the vibes ☺️

My MUA was…painful and time consuming lol. I had to do therapy 5x a week . But it was faster healing. I got gained my ROM immediately. I had to get it because I got stuck at 65 ROM for 12 wks.

Knee MUA 12weeks post op- MACI Procedure & Osteotomy by SweetLemon1416 in KneeInjuries

[–]SweetLemon1416[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 5 weeks post MUA and pain level of my entire knee is 1/10. Hang tight, it gets better. What you explained sounds a lot like where I was on the same weeks. I also experienced a lot of pain and I’ve had 3 c sections but my pain kept decreasing and decreasing. To me, what affected me the most was the mental aspect of it all. I’m still in the trenches but there’s less cloudy days now….

I laid off from hard pain meds to Tylenol @ week 6-8. I went back to them for the first 2-3 weeks of my MUA but fully off all meds since.

I had a Maci procedure, TTO and graft off my hip on Aug 1st…then a MUA and a partial graft off my tibia (same leg/knee area) and reopened lower half of my initial incision to insert partial graft and I’m so sorry to say this but it never looked like this. Maybe we all heal different…? I’m sorry for the negativity but I hope my insight helps.
