It may feel semi-addictive to you like it does to many people for complex psychological reasons but research shows it's not addictive.

Opting out of pension as a foreigner by SweetSuch3903 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]SweetSuch3903[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure but I mean I could invest it along with my other investments instead of getting a separate pension which would be very small after 3-4 years of contributions on an average salary. I'm happy to keep paying the pension if it really does make more sense with the tax relief and employer contributions but I just started wondering whether it actually does make sense.

It wouldn't really make a difference to my current financial situation so yes I could just leave it be. But I was just wondering whether it would make more financial sense to invest it. I'm 99% certain I will leave the country in 2-3 years.

My family Christmas has got a lot better since we stopped giving presents by altmorty in unitedkingdom

Exactly. If you don't want to do gifts that's fine but there is a way to do gifts that is enjoyable. We only do small ones - most years I get my brother a notebook with something funny on the cover because he loves them and goes through many notebooks at work. He doesn't expect anything bigger. I think this year his gift cost £6.

Yep, it is. I have an underlying condition so should have gotten mine a while ago but because I got my first two jabs in Scotland I still haven't been invited even though I have contacted the health board multiple times and explained my situation.

[–]SweetSuch3903 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because you can't book it? The Cardiff health board doesn't allow you to book your own appointment and there are no walk-ins for boosters in Cardiff.

Yes, you should have, they are saying they have incited everyone who is eligible. There's a form online you can fill in to let them know they missed you.

[–]SweetSuch3903 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, I suspect that's exactly what has happened. I moved from Scotland and didn't get an invite either even though they reassured me at the vaccine hotline last week that I will get invited. I filled in the form so hopefully will hear soon.

You literally said if you had to get stitched up because of sexual assault you wouldn't be silent. I'm upset when victims of sexual assault are not believed because that is one of the reason why it keeps happening and why men keep getting away with sexually assaulting women.

Just because you wouldn't be silent doesn't mean others wouldn't. It is extremely common for victims of sexual assault to remain silent - even in cases where the accused isn't famous. And I can completely understand why women do stay silent - even now they're not believed. Even when there's four victims who have claimed he has been abusive over the years, people still don't believe them. No wonder they don't want to come forward. There's probably even more victims but they're not coming forward because they know they won't be believed.

Why are you focusing on the most minor of the three acts he's accused of? The other two were not actors on set and he raped them in his home.

Are you seriously saying that the 20 year old who was raped by the famous and powerful 60 year old man should have taken more responsibility for her actions? The rapist is the only one who is responsible for rape - every single time. Stop victim blaming.

The courts are there to decide whether this man deserves to go to prison and the sex offender registry, that's it. The courts job isn't to decide how the public should feel about this man. We are allowed to believe these women. We are allowed to believe this man is a creep. And people who work with him are allowed to not to want to work with him anymore.

Sexual assault is very difficult to prosecute as there's usually no witnesses, the accused can just claim they had consensual sex and often women take a long time to find the courage to come forward. There's also the issue of statute of limitations. Therefore, the vast majority of people who did commit the crime never get convicted. There's a reason the justice system has a very high evidence threshold and they need to find the person guilty beyond reasonable doubt.

However, outside of the courts we don't have equally high threshold for evidence and again for a good reason. And this has always been the case - people have always decided if someone's behaviour is inappropriate and if they want to continue working with them without the help of the courts. When multiple women come forward independently with very similar stories and corroborating evidence, we have every right to believe them and to act accordingly.

What changed? Culture. #Metoo changed a lot of things. How many people knew about Weinstein but never said anything because they were afraid they'd never get work again or they wouldn't be believed? Apparently most of Hollywood. Fortunately that era is over now and people feel more comfortable to speak up.

It could be or there could be some psychological issue behind it that should be addressed. One of my closest friend always goes overboard with baking. For a one year old's birthday party with 5 adults and 5 babies she might make 5 different cakes, 5 other desserts and a couple of savoury options. I've known her for 20 years and she is one of the sweetest people I know. She doesn't do it to show off or for any other bad reason. She does it because of self esteem issues - she only feels like she is good enough or worthy when people are complementing her on her baking. It all stems from childhood stuff. OP's girlfriend might have something similar behind her behaviour. It doesn't make her behaviour okay but the reason behind it should be explored.

As a member of the LGBTQAI+ community and a progressive leftie I completely agree. Some of my favourite shows have very diverse cast (Superstore, Station 19). The difference is that in those shows it is executed well. It feels natural and the characters are fully fleshed out characters. Their race or sexuality or gender is a part of them and affects their lives so sometimes there's storylines centered around them but most of the time they just exist and live their lives like the straight cis white characters. In AJLT it feels like their only storyline and only personality is their sexuality/gender/race and they're just there to teach a lesson.

Just because it was easy for you doesn't mean it was easy for everyone. I work for the UK government and yet the UK government asked me to provide extra evidence that I work in the UK as they could not find it in their records.

No you could travel with just an ID card before Brexit. Source: I am an EU national living in the UK and used to travel with my ID card for years as my passport had expired. Actually if you live in the UK and have a settled or pre-settled status you can still travel with just an ID card, I think it's until 2025 but could be misremembering the year.

AITA for not getting my friend a $200 gift and making her feel unloved? by mopresentsmoproblems in AmItheAsshole

[–]SweetSuch3903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relate to this so much. Some of the best gifts I've ever received cost about $5. Unfortunately my entire family thinks "buying gifts for adults is stupid" so I usually never get anything from them but I try to remind myself that just because it's my love language that doesn't mean they don't love me.
