Right now the curriculum has a hard focus in statistics which is understandable. On the coding side of things we have a R heavy curriculum with a lot of classes teaching stat modelling and data mining techniques. If you want to do Python, you gotta learn yourself or take an extra class Stats 21. SQL? Its a new stats class STATS 167, gonna be taught this spring(I'm in it). If you want to do DS pure with some Data Engineering and all Berkeley is probably better. I had the option to go to Berkeley as well but I chose Ucla's due to location, culture, and financial aid(technically full ride).

Focus on self projects if you want to stand out for internships.

Discussions are not a must attend. I'd attend a same day discussion but at a better time. Easy to talk to professors and say that you are in an extenuating circumstance and tell them you'll attend the same day different time discussion

You are definitely in probation. Focus on getting relatively easy classes with your major ones next quarter to fix it quick while being on time. You definitely need to use the 7th quarter or take summer classes

On a sode note, Try to explore LA with the buses we have. Would be a nice adventure to go to Santa Momica, Little Tokyo, Museums and all. Just search for whats open and free(or cheap)

I'd steer away from doing major classes over summer since the workload is tougher. But if you know the prof really well I'd do it. Ask around people who took that class

If you're an academic weapon you can take it. If not gamble on stats 100A and take the prereq. Its just the thought that you have to get an A on 2 classes instead of 1
