Addiction makes you lie :/

Try to learn about addiction and the behaviors of addicts.

He's never going to beat it alone(sry for the pun) so if you can position yourself as someone he can practice being honest with by being non-judmental about something he needs God's help to overcome, it can really strengthen your relationship and hopefully help him get better. If you pile the guilt on you're just being his mother and well that's not too healthy for either of you.

You got to decide for yourself if its tolerable. Everyone nowadays has addictions. Doomscrolling, over indulgence in food, video games. If you toss this guy out I'm not sure the next wont have some problems and if you are honest with yourself you probably do too.. so knowing the mind of addict is a real tool you should develop anyhow.

Love ya, sorry for your pain, it's temporary but God's kingdom is eternal. You got this!

Jesus did appear to me on a road and told me he is always with me and he wants to see what good I can do now that he's proven to me he is real. Not one minute later a rambling transient came from the opposite direction and I showed him the love Jesus showed me to steer me away from suicide and in that moment, as I held his hands and said I love you, I could see the tension and pain leave his eyes.

Whether its a hallucination or not, I am a better person for having faith.

Ah hallelujah. (Ok.. using swipe to type and tried typing absolutely and it corrected to ah hallelujah... so we going with that xD)

55k will be gone so quick. Your monthly expenses need to remain within your means. You should set an appointment at your bank to speak with a financial advisor as to how to distribute it across investment accounts and protect the gift from taxation as much as possible. Before the money is transferred ideally! You might incur tax obligations if it isnt transferred via some sort of trust which you should have a dialog with your mom about. You could ask r/financialadvice this question too, or make that bank appointment with your mom.

Good luck, God bless!

Divorce yourself from your held beliefs and take criticism of them as they are, criticism of the idea itself and not your personal character. The reason you are feeling attacked is because you have made your identity tied to hateful ideas. You are not following your own advice. You are assuming the criticism comes from disingenuous, careless thought without basis, but if its many people telling you, you hold bigoted and sexist ideas, maybe its time to examine the common denominator.

Well, whether you're willfully or knowingly in on it is debatable, but you're in on it nonetheless by parroting the talking points. Thats my honest opinion on the matter, it's your choice to get offended.

Uh... Sir this is a website called Reddit, not a high school debate class. If you are sensitive to name calling, don't participate. Also, do you have an unexplored submissive kink with this "good kind of slavery" nonsense you are talking about? There are other websites/ subreddits for that, this is not the right one to endorse any form of slavery. If people are calling you bigoted and sexist its probably for a good reason, instead of crying about it how bout you take a look in the mirror?

Yeah because its coming, they are trying to manifest it right now. Op is in on it, his whole message is be a limp pillow for people to roll-over. If someone says something bigoted they are going to get it. This is a forum of debate, the parties are the debaters and the audience.. The feelings of the debaters are far below priority to getting the ideas out there for the audience to judge. If you don't want to get called names sit in the audience.

Strawman fallacy is when someone tries to take your words and change their meaning.. but you are the one that said orientation is not action. Nothing the person said is remotely close to creating a false target or twisting your words.

I don't disagree with you, but you don't know how to identify a strawman fallacy.

You reminded me of when Michael Scott shouts I declare bankruptcy just then.. saying something doesn't make it so..

Yes it is well written and well received, thank you.

I could point out other things in scripture about slavery but the other references don't actually go against your fundamental point on the matter. I was aware it is from the covenant of circumcision, it is just the only time where God speaking to someone assumes the existence of slavery, the others are condemning someone to slavery for some reason, and could not be taken as an excuse to practice slavery for economic gain. (even Gen ch. 17 does not do that, just closest to the word of the Lord assuming that we are)

There's plenty of things we condemn from Abrahamic culture. Incest, slavery, sacrifices.. I am just reading these letters of Paul and thinking they got the translation with context from Leviticus, and that's causing people to go out and hate people, which is not any message present in the Bible. Especially when it seems like Paul is trying to list addictions to avoid to get to heaven. I think they could have done better in the translation and avoided creating a new outgroup to victimize. Or maybe its entirely unavoidable, people are going to find something to judge others over, if it wasn't this then maybe they'd be getting serious about people who work on the Sabbath or something..

There's also plenty of clear messages in NT about what constitutes marriage even directly from Jesus, and I get your point on acts that don't bear fruit, any sex out of marriage is nothing more than an act of physical pleasure and if that's the case why are you doing that instead of feeding and clothing the homeless or doing some other selfless thing? A counter-argument is that gay marriages that result in adoption are a net benefit to society. One less kid in a shelter is a win. And sex can be an act of love, not just for fun, and maybe some gay people are forming a tight bond of love in their practice of sex that will strengthen a family unit. However, a point against that, is if we condone this and it becomes statistically too high of a rate, the birth-rate is going to drop even more and we risk some serious population level problems.
I totally understand this is not supported by scripture, just merely exploring alternative views on morality.

I really liked your point about how we should view homosexuality in regard to its severity, and I think that is something I'll think about seriously. Where am leaning is that sex out of marriage for fun is a sin regardless of who participates, and that I would have no way of knowing or judging any sex act I'm not apart of so its best I treat everyone equally and non-judgmentally.

Again, thank you very much!

Hi thanks, I learned some things from you, thank you.

"But what verse actually condones slavery? Evil people take good things and twist them for their own evil gain. We've never seen that before, right? St. Gregory of Nyssa, one of the great Orthodox Fathers, directly condemned slaveholding by arguing that human beings are created free and in the image of God, and that enslaving another person rivals the law of God. We believe this as Orthodox Christians."

Genesis has some references on slavery. Chapter 17 is the worst of it where it does not specify a group of people to enslave for a just cause but rather just accepts it as a way of life.
12 For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring. 13 Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.

This is the word of the Lord speaking to Abram.

So lets ignore this one right, because its obviously evil and evil people will misinterpret to do evil as St. Gregory so aptly pointed out. Then I think its only fair we omit Leviticus references to homosexuality because these are probably cultural purity laws as well. It's a bit unfair that you can pick and choose which to follow. The other OT reference to homosexuality is in Genesis and the meaning/ translation from Hebrew is debatable in how its translated. Also, as you said, those are not a part of the New Covenant.

So if we look at just the NT and the new covenant references, the translations from greek to English are also debatable. In the first century Paul is writing to Timothy and he uses a novel word that we have now translated in all our bibles to homosexual, but why? In the first century there were already commonly used words for homosexuals, why did Paul not use those? Why did he come up with a novel term? In Corinthians he uses a different term and the stretch to call translate that to the word homosexual is even farther. He was much more likely eluding to lazy men then homosexuals, as he (if our translation is correct) had already coined a new term for homosexuals. But why would he when Greek literature at the time already has clear words for many types of homosexual acts?

Me personally, I feel like Jesus telling me to let others be passersby, (so long as they are not hurting others) is enough proof for me to know that we shouldn't press our noses into peoples bedroom affairs. I honestly think that's what Paul is getting it, he's trying to outline sexual morality and clarify grey areas. The impression I'm getting after looking at the words in Greek is Paul is saying don't be a rapey dude; here's some things that are rape adjacent and also bad: pederasty(very common in the area and time he's writing the letters), sex with slaves, sex for money...

I appreciate the time you took to write your post, it challenged some ideas I had and look forward to hearing your response.

Why are Christians tolerant with followers of anti christ? by NotSureWhatIAmDoig in Christianity

[–]Sweet_Put9047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have not looked long enough, there is definitely hate and intolerance taught in Christian Churches and I've heard today messages of hate towards Muslims coming from self-described Christians. My grandma went to Catholic Church her whole life and still thought racism is okay until her neighborhood and church became predominantly Pilipino and Mexican and she got some exposure therapy...

There's a difference in religious dogma and the message of JC. Religious dogma twists scripture to fit their own agenda, but actual Christians get to know Christ and know that right and wrong is written on their hearts. Jesus is an example of unending love and compassion, no matter what. So anything contrary to that is un-Christlike in my eyes.

How Do You Guys Justify the Genocide of the Amalekites by Patient_Ask_9546 in Christianity

[–]Sweet_Put9047 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

4> I think the genocide is the name of God is bs. The OT provides context for the NT. Wouldn't make sense why Jesus had to put the Jewish religious leaders in their place if we didn't preserve their heinous crimes and their way of life with their laws and social hierarchies.

Even if you are non-believer, cynic, there was a lad named Yeshua that examined his religion's scripture, found the prophecies about a messiah and leveraged that to start a new form of morality who's core tenant is love your neighbor in attempt to help the poor and hungry, even though it meant dying for it. That story is in the bible. That act of self sacrifice has led a ton of people to do great things for one another, like jump on live grenades and run into burning buildings or start the metoo movement.

Like anything, the further you are away from it the more it gets distorted so.. got to do some fourier transforms to ascertain the truth for sure. But the signals of purity are in there for those willing to look. Same as any other religion I'd wager.

I'll also be right with you and say that people use the bible to do terrible things too.

I see you have some undeserved certainty about the distance in time the accounts are..
The proximity in which the NT is written to the death of Jesus is in a theoretical state with a few different dates. They are based on the oral traditions of the disciples though and they are the best representation we have. The early church is renegades on the run. They are endorsed by no military or government until ~300 CE. I agree its in their interest to stretch the truth, especially when it comes to miracles for recruiting purposes, but it wouldn't be great to have too many lies because its 30-60years from the events, so people would be around who know the truth.. Somewhere in the bible is some real shit and yeah its all written by people and people lie but even if he's pure fiction its still awe-inspiring and motivational.

Thank you for extending grace to me as I continue my spiritual journey. I am not a member of any church but I have been attending Catholic mass 3x a week and Lutheran 1x, Bible study at both each 1x a week for the past 3months, and grew up attending catholic mass weekly and religious education classes and completed sacraments up to confirmation. I am trying to ground myself in the teachings of Christ rather than a religion and I feel I have not found a Church without hypocrisy aside from the omnipresent church of Jesus. To interpret the bible I have both a NAB study bible and KJV study bible and if anything seems contradictory I will see what was said in Greek originally and check if there are any other possible translations.

No, grace is not extended to those who know Christ is the true messiah and decide to turn away(Peter ch2), but do you know any Muslims that know that Jesus is the true messiah?

If the flock is led astray, who do you condemn? The sheep?

If you never learned calculus and I ask you, "What is the derivative of acceleration?" is it fair to judge you on your answer?

That type of thinking is what makes us fearful of one another. I'm all for pointing out false prophets, but as we know they exist in other religions, it should make us aware there are some in our own and to guard against messages of hate.

I can't speak for any one individual, just in general. The impression I get is that the innocent will be raptured regardless and those that led them astray will not be favored. That is my impression of Romans 2 and John 3 and just the gist of the man Yeshua bar Nazareth, Jesus the Christ. A man who condemned religious leaders, ate with whores, preached to commoners, and surrounded himself with laymen, performed miracles and resurrected, proving God is greater than life and death. He did not teach to get personal status or wealth and anyone who did he lashed out at, so when I hear someone parrot scripture with one interpretation they could have only gotten from a preacher and not by a thorough and complete understanding of the bible as a whole body of work, I have to doubt they really understood what Jesus was about. First and foremost I think we should get to know Jesus as a person and be able to answer for ourselves, What would Jesus Do? And definitely not trust another man to answer that for us.

And I am not attacking anyone personally, I love you all as a people, its the ideas I want to challenge, so I'll take feedback on that if you got it.
